The final stage is tough again, 172km and a finish on the Cerra Torro. Spilak is a Favourite and has a lead of over two minutes in the GC on Madrazo and Taaramäe although they will have decide whether to race against Spilak or each other. Denifl, Alarcon and Tenorio are also favourites for the stage.
The first climb went to Kohl and the sprint to Ji, who has underperformed a bit this race, also in the break are Keinath and Talansky also in this group. Behind OZ and Ayubowan! Are both chasing hard, seemingly without reason, either they want a rider in the break or Pinot and Morton are feeling good today. Eventually the two teams concede and the break pulls away.
With 100km left Pirazzi and Agudelo both jump away from the peloton. Further up the road Ji has taken every mountain sprint so far.
Just after Galta, Gomez Marchante and Karnulin go as well and catch Pirazzi and Agudelo, before continuing and dropping them.
Half-way through the stage Keinath realises he can win the mountains competition and proceeds to win every remaining sprint, putting him provisionally into the KOM lead. Just 22 kilometres to go and this group has 3 minutes on the chase and 6 minutes on the peloton.
Taaramäe does the same as Madrazo yesterday and attacks on the smaller climb before the main one, Spilak isn’t going to let that one go, while Madrazo, Velits and Henao Montoya quickly chase up to them.
As soon as Madrazo, Henao Montoya and Velits catch up, Spilak goes! He wants to win this race with Panaché!
As they begin the climb Talansky goes for it! Ji chases him, while Kohl and Keinath keep working together.
15km left at the base of the climb and the race is a different story, Talansky, Ji and Keinath have come together and have 3 minutes on these riders, so he’ll have a fight today. Taaramäe and Madrazo have caught Spilak, while Henao Montoya and Velits yo-yo off the back, dropping off every time they accelerate before coming back. A 7 rider group containing Dekker, Dombrowski, Denifl, Tenorio, Alarcon, Kritskiy and Martin chase.
Just over 10km left and Talansky goes, Ji chases, while Keinath drops back and is caught by Kohl, they still have 2 minutes on Spilak’s group.
7.5km left and Ji, Keinath and Kohl have all been caught leaving just Talansky out the, who still has 1 minute 30 seconds in hand. The pace must not be too high yet though, as a 6 man group (the 7 mentioned earlier minus Dombrowski is just 50 seconds behind the yellow jersey group.
Talansky had nothing left and is caught with 6km to go, neither do Velits and Henao Montoya who both get dropped, just the top three in the general classification left then.
Madrazo goes! Taaramäe digs deep and follows him, as for Spilak, no reaction, he stares forward and keeps going, Velits and Henao Montoya catch him! There are 5km left, 2 minutes is still possible if they commit themselves.
They have a 40 second gap with 3.5km remaining, Martin catches up and offers Spilak much needed support, Denifl, Alarcon, Tenorio and Dekker have almost caught up to now!
2km left and they have a 1’02 lead on Spilak, once time bonuses are reckoned it’s possible, Madrazo is 2’09 down on Spilak and Taaramäe is at 2’20, so they’ll be wondering about each other as well.
1 kilometre left, Martin is chasing for Spilak and the lead is at 1’10, but they are starting to sprint now!
500 metres left and they are neck and neck! This sprint matters for the points as well as the GC, but that also depends on Spilak.
And, by the smallest of margins, it’s Madrazo! Just beating Taaramäe, now we wait for Spilak.
Spilak beats Martin for third, I’m sure he would have given the place to him if not for the time bonuses, he stop the clock on 1’11! He keeps the yellow jersey! Martin’s performance here put him in the top 5 as well.
Henao Montoya and Velits complete a good day with 5th and 6th respectively, Denifl manages 7th before Tenorio leads Dekker and Alarcon to the other top ten positions.
Simon Spilak wins the 2015 Vuelta a Colombia a great performance, taking 2 stages and the points jersey as well.
