Just 138km but the finishing climb of Cerro Calima is tough enough to cause time gaps and anybody still with overall victory in mind has a metaphorical mountain to climb to beat Spilak, still Madrazo, Taaramäe and Alarcon can still do it. It’ll also be a chance for Denifl to make up for a bad race so far.
Ruijgh, Faiers, Chamorro, Gusev, Agudelo, Pirazzi, Saggiorato and Pardilla make up the break today.
Despite Pardilla’s attempts, Ruijgh is first over the first four climbs today, provisionally putting him into the mountains lead. Pirazzi, Gusev and Chamorro are having trouble keeping up with this group, who are 10 minutes ahead of the peloton. There are 72km to go.
There’s no interest in the intermediate sprint, but Ruijgh still is the first one over the line.
Ruijgh wins the final intermediate climb, he has earned enough points so that only Pardilla could prevent him from wearing the jersey tomorrow. With just 20km remaining, albeit most being uphill, this group still has over 8 minutes on the peloton, where Festina is forcing the pace.
And Madrazo attacks! He is 2’24 down on Spilak in the general classification, so he has decided to go before the final climb! Spilak and Taaramäe know you can’t let Madrazo up the road and immediately give chase. Alarcon decides to wait, before thinking better of it and joining them.
The race has exploded now! Spilak attacks up to Madrazo ( Gusev and Chamorro as well) and keeps going, prompting Madrazo to follow, counter and get away again! Just behind Taaramäe leads the chase 17 seconds behind Spilak with Denifl, Kritskiy and Alarcon. 30 seconds later is Tenorio, Marquez, Dekker, Martin and Dombrowski. Velits, Suaza and Pinot all chase in front of a 22 man group.
At the front of the race Faiers has got away near the start of the final climb. 15km left.
Over the top of the penultimate climb the Tenorio group catches the Taaramäe group and Gusev forming an 11 man chase that is just 30 seconds down on Spilak, who is 14 seconds behind Madrazo. Velits top ten spot looks in danger as he tries to catch this group.
Spilak catches Madrazo on the descent and they open a minute lead on the group chasing behind. They’ve also caught Pirazzi, who looks to be struggling as they begin the final climb. Further back Velits has caught the chasing group.
Faiers is still out there, with 10km to go, he has a minute on the rest of the break and 6 minutes 30 seconds on the peloton.
Taaramäe is doing most of the work in the chase, so now he attacks to catch Spilak and Madrazo. Alarcon, Martin and Marquez also attack to chase Taaramäe just after.
Taaramäe catches Madrazo and Spilak, great ride by him. Further up the road, Faiers has 5km to go and still 1 minute on the rest of the break.
Faiers reaches the flame rouge, but Spilak, Madrazo and Taaramäe have caught Ruijgh, Agudelo and Saggiorato, as well as dropping of Pardilla.
Faiers takes victory today! Behind Madrazo finishes second, he’ll be disappointed with no serious time gains on Spilak in third although he does make a small gap, as well as getting himself a 12 second time bonus does put ahead of Taaramäe, there will be a fight for second tomorrow. Ruijgh leads Agudelo and Saggiorato for more mountains points, so he’ll have the jersey tomorrow. Martin, Alarcon and Marquez takes the final top ten positions in that order.
