Today’s another tough stage, with 8 categorized climbs over the stage, which is just less than 150km in length between Medellin and Tarso. Favourites today are the best climbers again including yellow jersey Spilak, Madrazo, Denifl, Alarcon and Tenorio.
An 8 rider break establishes a gap today, with Gusev, Pardilla, Antunes, Tatarinov, Keinath, Ruijgh, Tschopp and Portela off the front today.
Gusev took the first two mountain sprints.
60km to go and the break has begun to split up a bit, Gomez Marchante and Galta attack to catch the break, although only Gomez Marchante has made it to the front, with Galta riding with Portela 1 minute down on this group. Tatarinov has been dropped and is further behind.
Behind the peloton Holloway is almost 15 minutes down, so he’ll have a struggle to make the time limit today, Grosu and Howard are both almost dropped but are both within reasonable distance of the main bunch.
The 60 man peloton splits at the beginning of the descent, with 6th placed in GC Roche, Henao Montoya, Nibali, Fothen, Dombrowski, Talansky, Morton, Marquez, Pinot, Kritskiy, Ji, Cattaneo and Solis, amongst others. There are just 25 riders in the other bunch, so they might be able to make their way back if they commit themselves.
Kritskiy attacks on the descent and makes his way up to the front split of the peloton.
Keinath takes the final intermediate mountain sprint today, although the peloton have just caught the rest of the break and almost have caught him as well. There are still 30 kilometres left to race including the tough and long finishing climb to Torso.
Hacecký leads the peloton over the intermediate sprint, which they are strangely disinterested, despite the time bonuses, however the peloton managed to come back together over the climb, so back to a 60 rider group, with all the favourites aside from mountains leader Solis, who couldn’t keep up.
All that remains is a 20 kilometre climb but that doesn’t put off attackers, as König, Kirsch, Ratiy, Elissonde and Shikai all go at the base of the climb.
Nobody is willing to let the break go and it soon becomes a springboard for attacks from the GC riders, with Spilak, Alarcon, Ratiy, Taaramäe, Marquez, Roche, Velits, Dekker, Kritskiy and Madrazo are all here, while Navarro, Martin, Fothen, Talansky and Dombrowski all tried to reach the group, but couldn’t make it.
Not everybody can follow Spilak’s wheel and a group of four pull away, with Taaramäe, Alarcon and Marquez are the other three to get away with him. Madrazo chases just behind, with Velits and Dekker in tow, while there’s another small gap to Kritskiy, Ratiy and Roche. A small group has also formed between these riders and the peloton, containing Talansky, Dombrowski, Martin, Suaza, Navarro and Fothen. While Pinot, Henao Montoya and Shikai attack from the peloton behind and there’s still 15km left!
Tenorio manages to get away and join Pinot as they catch the Martin group (the third group on the road)
Denifl, Henao Montoya, Morton, Navarro and Shikai chase 20 seconds down on the group.
10km left and the Madrazo group can’t quite catch the Spilak group but won’t lose too much ground on them, with a 15 second gap at the moment. These two groups have a 2 minute gap on anyone behind, so not being here is not good for GC chances.
Situation with 10km remaining:
Madrazo attacks Dekker and Velits now! He’s trying to make his way to the front group on his own, which now has a 25 second advantage.
5km left, Marquez can’t hang on with the front group and Madrazo catches him.
3.5km left and now Spilak is alone, with Taaramäe and Alarcon unable to stay with him now, Taaramäe is just behind, Madrazo is still just 30 seconds down on Spilak though and Alarcon is somewhere in between.
Spilak really opens up now! Opening a minute gap on Madrazo (who has caught Alarcon) and 30 seconds on Taaramäe and he still has 2 kilometres left!
And Spilak takes a great win today, he even had time to celebrate the final few hundred metres. The next riders come through in ones and twos, Taaramäe is second losing 1’09 in the final 3.5km! Third is Madrazo 1’56 behind. Alarcon is 2’13 down and Marquez in 5th is almost 3 minutes down (+2’56). Velits and Dekker are the first two to finish together in 6th and 7th respectively, 3’02 behind. Martin got away from his companions to finish 8th, while Suaza, Dombrowski and /micro/vwa.png[/img] Denifl finish 9th, 10th and 11th respectively, 4’35 down on Spilak.
Just two riders don’t finish today, with Holloway and Feiereisen the only two not to finish.
