Vuelta a Colombia - Stage 3

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/Colombia/MG15_colombia_3_000.jpg

Today’s another tough stage, with 8 categorized climbs over the stage, which is just less than 150km in length between Medellin and Tarso. Favourites today are the best climbers again including yellow jersey pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/fes.png Spilak, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/qst.png Madrazo, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/vwa.png Denifl, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/rbh.png Alarcon and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/bac.png Tenorio.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/Colombia/MG15_colombia_3_001.jpg

An 8 rider break establishes a gap today, with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/tcs.png Gusev, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/bac.png Pardilla, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ven.png Antunes, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/mei.png Tatarinov, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/pok2.png Keinath, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/pro.png Ruijgh, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/sui.png Tschopp and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/btc.png Portela off the front today.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/tcs.png Gusev took the first two mountain sprints.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/Colombia/MG15_colombia_3_002.jpg

60km to go and the break has begun to split up a bit, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/boi.png Gomez Marchante and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/akm.png Galta attack to catch the break, although only pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/boi.png Gomez Marchante has made it to the front, with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/akm.png Galta riding with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/btc.png Portela 1 minute down on this group. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/mei.png Tatarinov has been dropped and is further behind.

Behind the peloton pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/rbh.png Holloway is almost 15 minutes down, so he’ll have a struggle to make the time limit today, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/met.png Grosu and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/bec.png Howard are both almost dropped but are both within reasonable distance of the main bunch.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/Colombia/MG15_colombia_3_003.jpg

The 60 man peloton splits at the beginning of the descent, with 6th placed in GC pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/pok2.png Roche, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/pro.png Henao Montoya, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/sui.png Nibali, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/mus.png Fothen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/pnd.png Dombrowski, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/gnu.png Talansky, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ozc.png Morton, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/boi.png Marquez, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ayu.png Pinot, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/tcs.png Kritskiy, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/mei.png Ji, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/gde.png Cattaneo and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/btc.png Solis, amongst others. There are just 25 riders in the other bunch, so they might be able to make their way back if they commit themselves.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/Colombia/MG15_colombia_3_004.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/tcs.png Kritskiy attacks on the descent and makes his way up to the front split of the peloton.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/Colombia/MG15_colombia_3_005.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/pok2.png Keinath takes the final intermediate mountain sprint today, although the peloton have just caught the rest of the break and almost have caught him as well. There are still 30 kilometres left to race including the tough and long finishing climb to Torso.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/Colombia/MG15_colombia_3_006.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/fes.png Hacecký leads the peloton over the intermediate sprint, which they are strangely disinterested, despite the time bonuses, however the peloton managed to come back together over the climb, so back to a 60 rider group, with all the favourites aside from mountains leader Solis, who couldn’t keep up.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/Colombia/MG15_colombia_3_007.jpg

All that remains is a 20 kilometre climb but that doesn’t put off attackers, as pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/bec.png König, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/vsa.png Kirsch, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/mus.png Ratiy, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ayu.png Elissonde and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/mei.png Shikai all go at the base of the climb.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/Colombia/MG15_colombia_3_008.jpg

Nobody is willing to let the break go and it soon becomes a springboard for attacks from the GC riders, with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/fes.png Spilak, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/rbh.png Alarcon, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/mus.png Ratiy, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/btc.png Taaramäe, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/boi.png Marquez, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/pok2.png Roche, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/bec.png Velits, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ork.png Dekker, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/tcs.png Kritskiy and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/qst.png Madrazo are all here, while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/bac.png Navarro, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/akm.png Martin, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/mus.png Fothen, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/gnu.png Talansky and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/pnd.png Dombrowski all tried to reach the group, but couldn’t make it.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/Colombia/MG15_colombia_3_009.jpg

Not everybody can follow pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/fes.png Spilak’s wheel and a group of four pull away, with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/btc.png Taaramäe, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/rbh.png Alarcon and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/boi.png Marquez are the other three to get away with him. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/qst.png Madrazo chases just behind, with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/bec.png Velits and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ork.png Dekker in tow, while there’s another small gap to pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/tcs.png Kritskiy, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/mus.png Ratiy and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/pok2.png Roche. A small group has also formed between these riders and the peloton, containing pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/gnu.png Talansky, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/pnd.png Dombrowski, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/akm.png Martin, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/vsa.png Suaza, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/bac.png Navarro and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/mus.png Fothen. While pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ayu.png Pinot, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/pro.png Henao Montoya and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/mei.png Shikai attack from the peloton behind and there’s still 15km left!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/Colombia/MG15_colombia_3_010.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/bac.png Tenorio manages to get away and join pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ayu.png Pinot as they catch the pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/akm.png Martin group (the third group on the road)

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/vwa.png Denifl, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/pro.png Henao Montoya, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ozc.png Morton, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/bac.png Navarro and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/mei.png Shikai chase 20 seconds down on the group.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/Colombia/MG15_colombia_3_011.jpg

10km left and the pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/qst.png Madrazo group can’t quite catch the pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/fes.png Spilak group but won’t lose too much ground on them, with a 15 second gap at the moment. These two groups have a 2 minute gap on anyone behind, so not being here is not good for GC chances.

Situation with 10km remaining:

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/Colombia/MG15_colombia_3_012.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/Colombia/MG15_colombia_3_013.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/qst.png Madrazo attacks pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ork.png Dekker and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/bec.png Velits now! He’s trying to make his way to the front group on his own, which now has a 25 second advantage.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/Colombia/MG15_colombia_3_014.jpg

5km left, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/boi.png Marquez can’t hang on with the front group and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/qst.png Madrazo catches him.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/Colombia/MG15_colombia_3_015.jpg

3.5km left and now pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/fes.png Spilak is alone, with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/btc.png Taaramäe and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/rbh.png Alarcon unable to stay with him now, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/btc.png Taaramäe is just behind, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/qst.png Madrazo is still just 30 seconds down on pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/fes.png Spilak though and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/rbh.png Alarcon is somewhere in between.

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/Colombia/MG15_colombia_3_016.jpg

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/fes.png Spilak really opens up now! Opening a minute gap on pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/qst.png Madrazo (who has caught pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/rbh.png Alarcon) and 30 seconds on pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/btc.png Taaramäe and he still has 2 kilometres left!

pcmdaily.com/images/mg/2015/Races/PT/Colombia/MG15_colombia_3_017.jpg

And pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/fes.png Spilak takes a great win today, he even had time to celebrate the final few hundred metres. The next riders come through in ones and twos, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/btc.png Taaramäe is second losing 1’09 in the final 3.5km! Third is pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/qst.png Madrazo 1’56 behind. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/rbh.png Alarcon is 2’13 down and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/boi.png Marquez in 5th is almost 3 minutes down (+2’56). pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/bec.png Velits and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/ork.png Dekker are the first two to finish together in 6th and 7th respectively, 3’02 behind. pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/akm.png Martin got away from his companions to finish 8th, while pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/vsa.png Suaza, pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/pnd.png Dombrowski and /micro/vwa.png[/img] Denifl finish 9th, 10th and 11th respectively, 4’35 down on pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/fes.png Spilak.

Just two riders don’t finish today, with pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/rbh.png Holloway and pcmdaily.com/images/mg/micro/vsa.png Feiereisen the only two not to finish.
