Stage 4 is flat again between Siaulial and Utena, although there is a bit of a climb near the end, it’s really not much. The favourite is Ciolek again, although the past two stage winners Avelino and Ahlstrand are both good chances, as well as Nelson and Guillén are worth mentioning, really there are lots of sprinters who could do something special today.
If the last hill comes into play Pavarin, Rabottini, Ventoso and Tsatevich are the most likely to get away, as well as Boom who is within striking range of taking back the leaders jersey.
There’s a lot of interest in the break again today, eventually five riders get away, including Nsengimana, Corwin, Nieves, Van Zandbeek and Leezer.
30 kilometres to go and the peloton already has the break down to a 30 second gap, Leezer attacks to delay the inevitable and he is chased by Van Zandbeek. Slightly further back Nsengimana and Nieves are working together, they have dropped Corwin.
17 kilometres left and the break has been caught, this early capture could inspire someone to attack the bunch.
There are 5 kilometres to go and Vandousselaere attacks with his teammate Jallays on his wheel, Bank of Ireland duo Petrie-Armstrong and Irvine follow them, with Mundle on their wheel. The peloton is led by Puma – SAP ( Daniel – Giaux – Lander – Ciolek) although Swedebank are beginning to make an effort with Stenersen, Kreder and Ahlstrand, while Nelson is following that.
3 kilometres left, the attack didn’t last long due to the strength of Puma – SAP, who still have Giaux and Lander in front of Ciolek, who is being followed by Nelson. Swedebank aren’t giving up behind them, still with Stenersen and Kreder leading Ahlstrand, Keukeleire knows that Ahlstrand’s wheel is good to follow from stage 1 and Guillén follows him. Boom is well-placed, although he has missed the hills to attack. D. Van Poppel, Kvist (who has been left to fend for himself), Bouhanni and Drapac are all here as well, although Avelino is nowhere to be found.
2 kilometres to race and some confusion amongst the Swedebank riders has given a gap to Giaux, Lander, Ciolek and Nelson. Just behind, Kreder, Stenersen, Ahlstrand, Keukeleire and Guillén are trying to reorder themselves before the gap becomes too large.
1 kilometre to race, Nelson begins to pull out of Ciolek’s wheel, is he going too early?! Kreder and Keukeleire both make their own efforts to catch up, while Bouhanni and Ahlstrand begin to launch their own sprints!
500 metres, it’s just these three now and they’re all neck and neck! The small time gap might even be counted for the general classification if they can hold it! Behind Kreder and Keukeleire are giving everything, Ahlstrand and Bouhanni are just a little bit behind them. Slightly further back is chaos; Giaux, Anton Martin, Schädlich, Guillén, Petrie-Armstrong, Stenersen, Drapac, D. Van Poppel, Klostergaard and B. Van Poppel are covering the entire road in more or less of a line.
300 meters left and Ciolek is steaming ahead! Nelson is on his wheel now, that’s the most he can do. Just behind Ahlstrand and Bouhanni have caught Kreder and Keukeleire, but they haven’t managed to pass them yet. There’s a small gap to the rest of the riders, which is led by Giaux and Anton Martin.
And Ciolek takes the win! His team set him up perfectly and he just had to finish it off. Nelson finishes second moving up to third in the GC, while Lander mimics his teammate’s celebration as he crosses the line. Ahlstrand throws his bike across the line to inch past Bouhanni, that one place is enough to keep the yellow jersey by one second on Ciolek. Keukeleire and Kreder are the next two through, then there is a small gap before B. Van Poppel finishes 8th ahead of Drucker and Kvist.
With just 1 second separating Ahlstrand and Ciolek, tomorrow’s stage will surely be tense.
