 Philadelphia International Championship
Welcome to downtown Philadelphia, Pennsylvania for the Philadelphia International Championship! The classic course features 8 laps at right around 23 kilometers per lap. The main feature of the race is the notorious Manayunk Wall. At 1 kilometer in length, it averages 6.2% with a maximum gradient of 11.0%, and the race will finish at the top.
This race has a long and interesting history, with previous champions including speed skating legend and winner of 5 Olympic gold medals Eric Heiden, two-time Tour de France stage winner Lance Armstrong (1993, 1995), and Sean Yates. Who will be crowned the "international champion" this year?
Despite the significant elevation gain and difficult uphill finish, the course is rated as flat and as such we have a deep field of sprinters. Notably among them is defending champion  Matti Breschel, who proved last year and in 2008 that he has the combination of climbing ability and sprint power that is required to win this race. Other notables include  Gerald Ciolek, who is perhaps the fastest pure sprinter in the race, and  Juan Van Heerden who is nearly as fast as Ciolek and slightly more capable in the hills. Other top sprinters include  Heinrich Haussler, Giacomo Nizzolo,  Cameron Meyer,  Ricki Nelson,  Raúl Granjel Cabrera, and  Jens Keukeleire.

It is also worth mentioning that there are a number of decent puncheurs here with Manayunk in mind, although none of the division’s heavy hitters. The strongest is Mario Vogt. However, we also have Clemens Fankhauser, Eduin Becerra, Zsolt Der, and Félix Emilio Besada.

Thanks for the preview.  I'm hoping Sobota can put in a good sprint or maybe Der or Mørkøv can attack. But likely not much for us.

One of the C1 races with the highest proportion of CT teams.
Have high hopes for the first notable result of Van Heerden's season. Don't think he has really raced much yet, but this should be a good chance for a result.

Interesting that Demare doesn't even appear in that table, much less in the text
The perfect scenario would be a sprint train Bar-Demare-Ciolek, with Demare dropping absolutely everyone as soon as that hill starts (including his own leader).
I could also do with Ciolek still having enough energy to pass him though, as long as noone else does. 
Good to see the risk wasn't worth it for most top sprinters, let's see who's right.

Matti Breschel returns as the defending champion, but he has not been on form in the last couple of races. Hopefully he has been pointing towards defending his crown in Philly.
Should be a fun race to watch.

I think a late attempt / the break has good chances so i decided against bringing and thought Geschke would be better in a stage race like ToSA (how wrong could i be ) so i went with Wagner as my only sprinter but with the expectation of him not even sprinting but more importantly, Smukulis and Mohoric as some guys who could attack at some point.
Hopefully, someone like Bekmanis joins the break as well.

Here is to either hoping for a result from Farrar in the sprint, or perhaps like the season opener a late breakaway push from Summerhill. I don't feel like the hill will play too much of a factor, the breakaways though could be decisive.

Victory and failure are so close together at times...
This could've easily been horrible, but a genius new invention by the PCM AI there to have a train AND have our second best sprinter take the prime position on another train!
All options covered, and man, it paid off.
And well, from that position there was always going to be only one winner, and he hasn't even hit his final form yet.

Very happy with that. You can't help who follows your leadout train, and in this case, the strongest rider was right on Van Heerden's wheel.
Great work by the team through the race, and I enjoyed seeing the Moroccan champion Ayoune lead the way before unleashing Van der Sande and Van Heerden. Great leadout leading to 7th, and 2nd place is super for Juan. Proper season now underway for him, after the DUC lottery and some gambles on cobbled races not being tough. Particularly like to see him going well in America, given his season goal.

What's with our team and 4th?!
Either way I'm very happy with Mørkøv, even if he was so close to a podium 4th is good and unless I missed something, we were the only CT team in the top ten. Was really expecting Sobota to sprint but it was pretty good for us in the end that the hill was harder than I thought. and Hagan did well getting in the break, as well as Gil for trying.

Cabrera is definetelly performing comparing to last season.
Also, having a sprinter with a good hill is surelike a winning combination in PCM14. In a career I had before buying PCM15, Caleb Ewan with a 72Hil/74SP combination was dominating. He had like 20 wins in a season. |
