Introduction
My name is Johnny Fitzpatrick. I have won the Tour and the Vuelta. I am one of the few to complete an Ardennes triple. I am a former World Champion. Milan-SanRemo and very nearly the Ronde. I am one of the best cyclists ever. This a story of my humble past, my phenomenal career, and my crumbling future. The carefully constructed lies, the heavily blurred truth. All of it will unravel. This story is the one I'm going to tell the judge, to bring own the most sophisticated and successful doping infrastructure ever seen in cycling. Unfortunately I'm going down with it.

The Past - Part I | Passion
My love with cycling begins with Lance. Watching him fly up the Alps and Pyrenees when I was just a toddler gave me my passion. As soon as I could bike without training wheels, I was racing my brother and sister. When I was seven, I entered my first recreational triathlon. I ripped apart everyone in my age group on the bike despite just being 2km, and although I got caught on the run towards the end, it stood out in my mind that this was something I was good at, this was what I wanted to do for hours on end. When I was nine, I saved enough money for my first racing bike.

The Future - Part I | Trial
It's June 24, 2026. I should be preparing for my defense of my maillot jaune. And I was, until a few weeks ago. Now I'm in a long black car with darkened windows, on the way to the courtroom, in London. I need to give evidence, evidence on my own practices. I'm finally opening up in public. Now I understand how Lance felt when he was interviewed by Oprah Winfrey. I knew I could turn back, not testify. But I knew it was the right thing to do. That didn't make it any less horrifying.

So you started the very same story once more. Flawless logic.
Also, honoured to be considered an inspiration. Pretty sure that's a first!

The Past - Part II | Natural
As soon as I first pressed down on the pedals, I could feel it. It felt so right to just be turning my feet, grinding the gears, making the bike move as fast as I could carry it. Sure, it took some doing to discover the ins and outs of riding a road bike, but I knew it from my first ride. I was just... good. It's the only way I can describe it, I knew I was meant to do this.
Once I entered youth races, I was cleaning up. Local group rides were just too easy. I was the talk of the local cycling community, but nowhere else. Only a scarce 4,000 people knew I was a complete natural on a bike. It wasn't until I was eleven the rest of Canadian Cycling even knew I existed.

The Past - Part III | Nutter
At school I had a couple of friends, but to many I was that scrawny nutjob who's always looking at those maps (I was totally enthralled by anything to do with France), and riding his bike. This made me an easy target for bullies, and it was relentless.
My problem was, my pride was too much to just ride away on my bike, at speeds they would never catch me. I took the beatings, I listened to their disgusting insults and I tried not to cry. I could have answered back, I had a quick wit. I was afraid, afraid of the fact that these guys could punch harder. I'd seen it done to others. What I really needed was a person I could trust, a really good friend...

The Past - Part IV | Helping Hand I
I first met her when I was just eleven, our parents had invited the new family in town over for dinner. She was pretty smart and caring, and I felt something I'd never had before. I knew it was a mere schoolboy crush, I was eleven and it was probably unrequited.
Anyway, we hit it off straightaway playing softball in the backyard as regular friends, and it turned out she was coming to my school the next week. She asked me how it was, I said it was fine. Which was a lie.
Once we returned inside both sets of parents looked like fast friends too, and there was a pleasant atmosphere around the table. It seemed like we'd be seeing each other at more of these occasions.
As we waved goodbye, I wondered if she could help me out at school. I decided to wait and see. |

Sounds like an interesting story. I don't know if asking critical questions is allowed, so i will put them into a spoiler.
Spoiler Those questions are age related...
Triathlon with 7? Is there really something like this? At this age? I was just curious, since I never saw any triathlons in our region for people under 16.
Cycling with 9? I thought, that most cyclists started cycling with 13-18. F.e. GVA(18) or Tony(14)
Otherwise, I have to say, that I like the way you build up this story, starting in the childhood and building it towards the present. Although I'm not sure, how long such a build up should be(It will probably work when the build-up is no build-up but the story itself.)
I don't want that you think that I'm just negative about your story. I really like the start of it. Good work.

Paul - No I'm open to constructive criticism like yours there, it just makes me better. First of all, from experience in New Zealand we have fun triathlons open down to age six, just a wee swim, a small bike on their regular bike, and a small run. I didn't mean like a full, competitive triathlon. With the biking thing, I started ~10, I have a friend who started ~12 months ago when he was 6, almost seven on a very small, second hand road bike. Obviously that's not normal but neither is Johnny
Thanks for your comments on the build-up, I will start racing soon but I'll continue doing the past as well, I'll have both going on at the same time. Thanks again for your constructive comments and kind words also!

Back up on the ages thing, you can do Tris at 7 in the UK but they are super short and super non-competitive. And cycling from ~10 is uncommon but possible, my local road club does a kids club from 7+
I like the non-linear story telling (but then you took inspiration of some of that idea from me so i have to like it) and i'm interested to see how that works out in the long run. Certainly it will keep me coming back for a while

@jandal and TMM: Alright, I didn't knew it was "kinda" normal where you are from. Thanks for the info.
Also I do like the non-linear style, too. I hope it will work out well, since it should be more difficult to write than linear stories.

The Past - Part IV | Helping Hand II
She passed me on the way. I was pleasantly surprised to see her on a bike as well. All the way to school we chatted and I talked her through the routine and before I knew it it was over. She wasn't in my class and as soon as she walked away with a dazzling smile and wave I found myself face to face with Tommy Kircke, the school thug gang's biggest and ugliest.
A friendly morning punch, a robbery of my pockets (empty because I'm not that dumb anymore) is what I expected but what I got was worse. A knee to the gut and a twisted ear as he dragged me into the homeroom, forcefully slumped me in pride of place on the desk and taunted me in front of everyone.
"Johnny has a girlfriend, Johnny has a girlfriend!" you know how it is at that age. I was humiliated completely before I'd even sat down. Not a great start to what would turn out to be not a great week. |
