How to win Mountain stages
AAssuncao
Hi guys, I started playing PCM less than a week ago. I rarely watched cyclism (only TdF one time or another) but i really enjoyed this game. So, can you give me some tips on how to win a mountain stage? Like when should I attack, or what should I do if someone attacks, etc... I tend to burn all my best climbers in the last climb, even with my 2nd best climber protecting my best one.

Also, a searched a bit around the forum, and didnt encounter a specific answer to this, but if it exists here, please post the link to that thread

Thanks in advance!

It`s tough to say as obviously you won`t win with a weak climber.
If you have one of the best climbers, then you have good chances by using the "dot" and then the percentages.

For example going into the climb with ~75 % on the ".".

Then higher or lower it, so that you stay with the best or when having a good form also higher it enough to gap them.

After a few stages you will get a feeling what percentages to use or when to change.
Imo it`s better way to climb than use follow or attack too often.

Also this might help you: https://pcmdaily.c....php?cat=1

attack before the climb start to get some extra seconds.

Here's a suggestion from the tips&tricks section:

Personally, I don't bother with protection, I don't think it helps much. I usually try an even high tempo, but I agree with the tips, sometimes a short attack to get away is useful, too. Get a feel for how long the yellow bar will last at which effort. Ideally, you want to end the stage with yellow and red bars just empyting as you cross the finish line. You should be able to go at 80 effort for roughly 15 km uphill, depending on the steepness of the climb and the resistance of each rider (higher resistance = yellow bar lasts longer). You can push it up to 82 or even 84 without going into the red, keep that for the final sprint. Or push the effort up even further as you get close to the finish to start using the red bar in the final kilometers. Don't expect to always win a stage, it depends on the daily form and who you are up against.

Edit: Oops, I dawdled a bit, others were faster with their answers.

If I've got a strong group of climbers in your team, I like to protect my leader with one rider and have the others keep up by riding on dot. The leader will then control the pace of the climb with the protecting rider taking the brunt of the work. I trigger the energy gel for when they are protecting (whether that helps or not). Use the weakest climber as the first protector and replace him when hes tired.
If the other favourites attack early, the team can then pace up the climb with the domestiques taking the damage (protection does help IMHO). You should end up with your second best climber as your last man protecting the leader, Team Sky-esque.

When the last team-mate is gone, you've then got the tactical decision to make - if you're still behind, attack or increase the dot number to bridge the gap. If you're on the front, attack or try and drop the other guys with a high steady pace on dot.

Watch other riders for the signs of fatigue when the animation starts to show them struggling - attack then and they wont be able to respond.

On a different note, doesn't the game represent different types of climbers via the acceleration and the resistance stats? High accel riders can launch explosive attacks to drop rivals quickly whereas the resistance riders can use a high sustained pace to ride opponents off their wheel gradually.

Finally, be careful that you select the right objectives for the team - Quick Step might not be in with a chance of the yellow jersey in the Tour (Uran not good enough).

Thank you all guys! I am really enjoying this game, and its making me a fan of cyclism! Thanks for all the help. I tried to put it in practice in the stage mode, and won the stage (pau-i dont remember the name Pfft ) with a 2 minutes advantage and Contador still fresh for a couple more km.

Once again, thank you and just one more question @Dee-Jay, since you talked about career mode, do i need to participate in all WCT races, or i shouldn't participate in all of them? I dont know if i need it in order to be the 1st team in the ranks, or if it will kill my guys in the late season

Even if the question is not directed to me...

I for example take part in around 30% of the PCT races...simply ones I like to play and some, where my team should take part(for quickstep = belgian races)

Ofc it depends on your team(amount of riders, strength of riders): f.e. if you have many sprinters take part in a few more flat stages...

@Paul23 yeah, they're the one with the most stars in the game xD Although they lack a bit in a major climber, don't they?

Most importantly, they got Tony...but they are in general an awesome team...

-strongest cobble squad
-Tony
-strongest TT squad
-very stong sprinting squad
-Tony
-Kwiatek
-Tony

No, seriously, Kwiatek is a beast...in my career he develops to a kind of Eddy Merckx...with 80+ in TT, PRL, MO and HI...also he is handy on the cobbles and in sprints. For sure he is not a match for a Froome in terms of pure Mountain/TT strength, but with clever tactics and a great backup team, you could have a chance.

Just try to keep as much stars as possible and keep the team mostly belgian and you will have a great time. In pcm13, I won the TdF in the first season, due to Kwiatek being awesome on the cobbles.

Yes I agree Paul - about 30% of the pro continental races. I guess OPQS will list the biggest races (World Tour) as their goals, so I suppose that leaves races where you can pick up "noteworthy results" or rider presence, probably the belgian races.
That means that you can then cherry pick the races you want to do the rest of the time- no boring minor races you have no interest in. Smile

What would be a good goal to set for OPQS in the Tour? Is Cav good enough to win the Green Jersey? Is Kwiatkowski or Uran good enough to even podium? Might be tricky. I suppose it depends on which database you're using.
