RTP INTERNACIONAL
Later tonight, the beautiful Santa Clara Convent in Vila do Conde will welcome the Portuguese press for the long-expected press conference about José Azevedo’s future.
José Azevedo? Who? José Bento Azevedo Carvalho once was one of the most well-known Portuguese climbers. Driven followers of cycling could know him as Lance’s lieutenant, transferred from Team Once. They called him The Ace. His subordinate role earned him a lot of praise. Armstrong calls him ‘the best domestique he’s ever had’. During his career, José manages to grab a top-10 spot in the final GC of a Grand Tour 3 times: 5th in the Giro d’Italia (2001) and 6th and 5th in the Tour De France (2002 & 2004). In 2007, he decides to join the Benfica cycling team to become their leader.
Lance didn’t stop thinking about his old friend though. After his retirement at the end of the 2008 Tour of Portugal, Azevedo joins the newly founded Team Radioshack to become one of their team managers.
Azevedo already confirmed he won’t be joining the new Trek Factory Racing team. If we may believe the recent rumours, he’s only going to confirm the fact he signed a contract with the Russian Katusha team.
TO BE CONTINUED...

KATUSHA DEAL CONFIRMED? - PART 1
José Azevedo:
First of all: welcome in Vila do Conde and thanks for being here tonight. As you all know, the rumours are going to be confirmed or the real truth is going to be revealed. Please take a seat and then we can get started.
I’ve also heard the rumours. Those about a pending deal with the Russian Katusha formation. Here and now, I want to confirm that the rumours were true. We were very, very close to an agreement. A last-minute fluke has changed everything though.

SO YOU REMAIN UNEMPLOYED? - PART 2
I received a very interesting phone call. At first I couldn’t believe I was talking to Miguel Indurain himself. The fivefold winner of the Tour de France wanted to introduce an idea he had been working on during the last months.
A new continental cycling team. He had been able to find some staff member having spoken with some other (recently) retired cyclists. The only one he’d still like to see added to the team staff was me. I did not hesitate.
Miguel did not tell me much during the first call. He only introduced the newly signed staff members and that the new cycling team would be sponsored by a rather big Portuguese government-owned corporation. I did not hesitate. We made an appointment and two days later I signed the contract and sat together with the other executives.
Nothing may be told about the sponsors nor can I show you a jersey yet, but I am very happy that I may present them to you all tonight…

STAFF PRESENTATION - PART 3
José Azevedo points at the main entrance and the following persons enter:
Spoiler FERNANDO CARVALHO
He may not be that well-known outside of Portugal, but he’s certainly going to be a huge support for our Portuguese cyclists. Back in the late 1980’s and the early 1990’s , he’s won 2 races that will be 2 of our main goals for this season: Volta a Portugal and Volta ao Alentejo.
After his retirement in 1994, he founded a cycling school. The reckless descender will join the team to share his experience and he will be very important for the important domestic races. Years ago, he has proved he knows how to win them, let’s hope we’ll be able to repeat these performances.
Spoiler THOMAS ROHREGGER The Austrian climber did not find a new team for the 2014 season. He didn’t get an offer to join Trek Factory Racing, so he decided to retire at the age of 31, after nine years as a professional. His biggest performance was the overall win in the 2008 Österreich Rundfahrt. He’s also won the KoM ranking in both this race and the 2010 TDU and the first (TTT) stage in the 2011 Vuelta a España.
It may seem a bit weird, an Austrian joining a Portuguese team, but the team roster that’s going to be revealed in a few days will definitely bring more clearness about this signing.
Spoiler NICK NUYENS The 33 years old Bom van Bevel decided to dissolve his contract with Garmin-Sharp after the 2013-2014 season. He stated a lack of confidence and respect to be the main reason for the breach between him and the American team.
The former winner of the Ronde van Vlaanderen, Dwars door Vlaanderen, Paris-Brussels, Tour of Britain, Omloop Het Volk, Kuurne-Brussels-Kuurne, GP de Wallonie(3x) and stages in Tour de Suisse, Eneco Tour and the Österreich Rundfahrt was known as a very smart rider and we hope he’ll be able to teach the young talents how to react in the finale of racing when a win is within reach.
Spoiler THOR HUSHOVD I guess we all know the guy. World Champion, winner of the Points classification in the Tour de France + multiple stage and overall wins in (WT) (stage) races until the very end of the ’13-’14 season. He won’t be in the 2014 BMC roster anymore.
He was a decent all-rounder. Thor could handle cobbles, a tricky descent, a mass-sprint and even uphill roads did not frighten him. He’ll be a very welcome addition to our staff.
