Two flat stages, three hilly stages and a mountain time trial (albeit a short one) comprise the c2 rated Giro del Capo.
In addition to 16 continental teams we have two African based teams from the Pro-conti level taking part here.
Favourites:
| HILL | Mendes | 78 | Kolobnev | 76 | Passalacqua | 76 | Cioban | 75 | Schurter | 75 | Moinard | 74 | Rosskopf | 74 | Jumbekov | 74 | Forte | 74 | Appleby | 74 | Ito | 74 | Sayar | 74 | Sorensen | 74 |
As with all of the continental races this season where it looks like the GC winner will be a puncheur, Mendes starts as favourite. His team, Bank of Ireland – Irish Cycling, have ambitions for promotion but as they arguably have one of the weakest squads at the continental level (not counting Mendes) they really have to win races such as this one to keep their dream of promotion alive.
Grupo Nutresa may not have succeeded in their original goal of building a mainly Latin American team, however, they do possess one of the most well rounded squads at the continental level, their consistent performances all season being testament to this. In Kolobnev they may have the closest challenger to Mendes, ably supported by Forte in this race.
Behind these riders there is a whole raft of riders who can challenge for the podium here, such is the closeness of the competition.
If the route proves to be more mountainous than expected expect the likes of Iglinskiy, Kulhavy Marentes and one of a large number of riders from Euskaltel-Bavaria Continental Team to take part in the action. The mountain time trial may not be the longest, however, it could decide positioning in GC if groups of favourites cannot be separated on the hilly stages.
The race starts with two stages which may suit the sprinters, the pick of which are: Farrar, Rangel, Opie, Haedo and Day.
Startlist:
-- This race will be on while the Vuelta a Guatemala takes a mini-break. |

Allthough this seems to be the common opinion, I just think that's bullshit. We failed to secure a superdomestique for Mendes since they were going at outrageous prices (given I would have needed what others would've considered a leader) and in retrospective I should've included such a rider in my first deal for Mendes. But there are enough 70+ domestiques to support him. Behind that, we've got what I'd consider one of the best sprint trains in CT, which is only stopped by Drapac needing a very specific type of profile, which of course attracts the best sprinters around. Behind that we've got some decent pointscorers for cobbles and McConvey who can certainly be useful in the mountains. [/rant]
Now, back to Giro del Capo: Again hoping for a Mendes win, and again the minimum goal is a podium.

Bit suprised too see Iglinsky, although I was never going to compete for the win here I think. If everything goes according to plan Kulhavi might snap a podium here as he has been good in hillier stages before. I dont think a puncheur will win this race tbh, as the two first hilly stages looks rather mountanious + the mt tt, I think this race will be won by a +75climber

Eager to see how we do here, strong field but not shockingly strong

not sure what to expect from this, the favourites list in the first post suggests we should be able to get a top 5 but something makes me think it's unlikely. I guess we are aiming at a top 10 although a Stage win could be posible as those downhills near the finish of stages 3&4 should favour Schurter.

Schachmann
One of my most ignored riders needing 4 seasons to max him with one level each year only.
Next year though should be a solid hill helper and the year after with 75 hill a good domestique in the higher divisions.
Nice to see him taking a stage here.

Uwizeyimana is one of the biggest surprises of my team this season. Always trying to get into the break and show the team's colours. It never payed of so far and again now he just misses the scoring positions in this stage.
At least he is going to wear the KoM jersey instead of Schachmann who is wearing yellow. |

Two thirteenth places in a row... not bad for not bringing a sprinter, but nothing to write home about either. Now, the hills should be a different story!

Fantastic start for us in this race. 3rd and 4th in stage 1, followed by a win in stage two. Our sprint train looked fantastic and our GC guy Marantes sits in 7th overall with a little bit of time due to bonus seconds over the other favorites. Proud of what the team has been doing of late.

Not much to shout about so far, but with 2 flat stages and us not bringing a sprinter it's not surprising. With the first of the hilly stages up next the race should get more interesting for us now.

Need a few points here towards our Africa goal, but not expecting to pull up any trees. Mainly here for experience after all. Kimeli should get a decent placing on the MTT. |

Much better. Having been inattentive earlier on in the race and been dropped, Orozco gets in the break and looks to have a firm grasp on the KoM jersey for now. Hopefully he'll look to protect that so we might actually get some points out of this race.

Awesome strenght from the team here, keeping the Jersey safely over the first hilly stage! Now the next stage might be a different story though..
