Is it just me or has anyone else noticed that your rider's average ability is not a true average of his various skill sets?
I realise I must sound like a total geek here but does anyone know why that is? Does it not include one or two of the categories? For example, is it the average across his best 10 stats?
It isn't an average of his stats. It should be, as Eyolfur of Cyanide says:
A weighted average. This is the best value of the rider in the 4 main rider types (tour specialist, sprinter, cobblemna and hilly classics). Each rider type gives a special coefficient to each note.
It gives a deeper insight on the rider level, since it is based on a combination of good notes, instead of a basic average (a rider with high notes in say acceleration + cobble + recovery could have a good average with the ancient system, but he was in fact a bad rider).

I think it depends on the rider style...a sprinter will have other attributes, which will be taken in account...f.e. SP, ACC, FL, END...than a TTer...TT, PRL, FL, HI, END, REC
