With the longest stage at 144,2 km this is a good race for those who lack a bit in the physical department for the biggest races and a strong team might not be as crucial as in many other races either.
Seven stages are split into two main categories: Hills and sprint stages with the first being the obvious GC deciders and stage 5 probably the queen stage of the race with the tough final climb.
This is one of the most popular C1 races with 24 teams taking part, 4 of these CT-teams who are up for a big challenge here!
A fun fact about the peloton is that the 24 teams represent 24 different countries as well.
Two editions ago the race (and u25) was won by Mikhayl Krasnoperov (Emu Export) ahead of Gustavo Veloso and William Ford while Assan Bazajev took the points jersey and Seeldrayers the KOM.
In 2013 the race was shortened from 10 to 7 stages. That edition saw Aleksandr Efimkin (Cisco Cycling Team) come out on top with Ben Nasser and Sinkewitz completing the podium. Efimkin also took the points jersey while André Cardoso took the KOM, Juan Sebastian Tamayo Martinez the U25 and Oz Cycling Project the team classification.
In the sprint stages there really is only one big favourite and with support from Modolo and Nateghi it will be a huge disappointment for Meiji if they go from Taiwan without stage wins:
Rider | Team | Spr | Acc | Flat | Lo Cicero | Meiji - Cannondale | 84 | 78 | 72 | Granjal Cabrera | Mobil - Aeropostal Ciclismo | 80 | 77 | 75 | Van Avermaet | Venchi - Ferranti | 80 | 71 | 76 | Nelson | Compal-Merida | 79 | 79 | 70 | Bennett | Jaguar - Eritel | 79 | 79 | 71 | Matthews | Risa - Ergon | 79 | 79 | 75 | Aberasturi | Bacardi Limited | 79 | 78 | 74 | Clarke | BelarusBank Pro Cycling | 79 | 78 | 66 | Davis | Karcher-Adira Racing | 79 | 77 | 71 | Hutarovich | BelarusBank Pro Cycling | 78 | 80 | 71 | Park | Compal-Merida | 78 | 77 | 70 | Anuawar | Compal-Merida | 78 | 76 | 70 | Rizza | Mobil - Aeropostal Ciclismo | 78 | 73 | 71 | Sonnery | La Vie Claire | 78 | 73 | 69 | Gatto | Kappa-ENI | 78 | 72 | 71 |
The big battles will be made on the four hilly stages though, where a small cobbles section close to the finish line on stage 3 could be helping to level the playing field between the top 3 punchers and their main challengers. All in all the startlist indicates that this could be a close race with many riders capable of doing something big and some big names in risk of throwing their advantage away in a dangerous 1,4 km…
Rider | Team | Hill | Acc. | Cbl | Di Maggio | Venchi - Ferranti | 82 | 75 | 51 | Froome | Quickstep | 81 | 75 | 51 | Dowsett | Jaguar - Eritel | 80 | 71 | 53 | Ben Nasser | Team Kenya Airways | 79 | 77 | 65 | Gautier | La Vie Claire | 79 | 77 | 60 | Skujins | Swedbank – PEAB | 79 | 74 | 67 | Betancourt | FCB - Polska | 79 | 74 | 52 | Efimkin | Meiji - Cannondale | 79 | 59 | 50 | Mehr-Wenige | AMEXpc | 78 | 67 | 54 | Bilbao | Bacardi Limited | 77 | 73 | 51 | Hoogerland | Swedbank – PEAB | 77 | 72 | 67 | Zeitz | Compal-Merida | 77 | 71 | 50 | Lejman | FCB - Polska | 77 | 68 | 51 | McEvoy | Karcher-Adira Racing | 76 | 79 | 65 | Vastaranta | Magna - Ryanair | 76 | 78 | 69 | Rabon | Metinvest-Emirates | 76 | 77 | 57 | Visconti | Oz Cycling Project | 76 | 74 | 73 | Simon | Magna - Ryanair | 76 | 74 | 60 | Hatanaka | Meiji - Cannondale | 76 | 73 | 60 | Taborre | AMEXpc | 76 | 72 | 54 | Weening | Gazelle | 76 | 70 | 56 | Serry | Quickstep | 76 | 67 | 67 | Jiao | Oz Cycling Project | 76 | 65 | 54 |
Full Startlist:
Home team Compal Merida have a strong sprinting team as well as Zeits for the hilly stages, but all-in-all they look to be just behind the very top riders here.
Meiji and Venchi looks to be the two big teams here with candidate for both the sprint stages and the GC.
Edit: Perhaps this route will be the one used in stead?:

Btw weren't the cobbles ought to be eliminated with the new route? I remember SN posting no cobbles should appear in this stage race himsel.
Anyhow, big expectations on Froome after his crashing and missing key moves, the field is crazy though.

Sonnery might do something here on Stage 6. And a top 10 from Gautier would be a good result. Nice preview by the way
Now for the Gautier jinxing to begin |

No cobbles in the race!
Should be a nice battle of the divisions top puncheurs. Also a nice amount of great sprinters. |

jph: Thanks!
I've used the stages from the "Upcoming Races - April" thread, but have found the issue as they start with t2_taiwan, but the latest updated DB point to t1_taiwan, which in deed does not feature cobbles.
Guess the three stages raced at this point is time down the drain then
I will await SN's decision before doing anything more

Thought I was sending Nathan Haas here(but obviously not). Otherwise pretty much my strongest team. Looks way to weak though. Should be a really good race...

High hopes for this race! Don't think there are many other stage races on the calender that suits Di Maggio as well as this one. Really hope we can win this one.
Lo Cicero will probably be unbeatable in the sprints, but Van Avermaet should at least be capable of a couple of podiums.

Hopefully we can spring a surprise and get something out of this race. It will probably have to be from a break though.

Stage win and good GC position please. Knowing the teams luck so far this year, it will be an anonymous GC finish and several 2nd place stage finishes. Brought Lo Cicero here for Stage 1 and 7, so hoping for results there.
Really liked the preview as well. Sorting the sprinters and punchers like that with the tables is always great.

Just got confirmation that a new route without cobbles will be used.
New profiles will be uploaded later today (think it's the same as the ones in the spoiler), hopefully along stage 1. For the preview just ignore the parts about cobble-stones and it should still be accurate
Edit: Same profiles, just no cobbles.

Week performance by Van Avermaet. Dockx lacking in the sprint train obviously didn't help. Hopefully we'll put in a better performance in the last two stages.
Bring on the hills!

A nice trip in the break has put one of my riders in the top 10 for now but I can't see him staying there after tomorrow's hilly stage.
