Driedaagse de Panne Discussion

Driedaagse de Panne
i1101.photobucket.com/albums/g434/Roturn1988/driedaagse_de_panne.png

Welcome to Vlaanderen, where the Driedaagse de Panne will make it's debut in the ManGame! The C1-race features an interesting mix in it's four stages and of course it's also a chance for cobblers to shine in a stage race.

The first stage may already be one of the most crucial: being rated a hilly stage, it's also the day with the longest cobbled sector(s). So this is the day, where the favorites may go for a selective race. The next two profiles are more or less panflat, with the second stage also featuring a short cobbled sector.

The concluding ITT comes at 11km: so it ain't the toughest timetrial, but given the not too brutal profiles in the road races (which may lead to less or small gaps), any second in this timetrial may count!

Even though the concluding ITT may be crucial for the GC, the most important stage may be the opening: here's where the GC-contenders can make a difference and drop both sprinters or the best timetrialers.

And the startlist of course features some huge names: Franzoi, Baugnies or Nuyens may be the very top-favorites, as they combine great cobbled with decent puncheur skills. Opposing to the likes of Thomas or Maes. The best bet would be Franzoi, as he also adds nice TT-skills. So riders like Baugnies may need to attack him on the hilly stage.

Some allrounders like Lagab, De Maar or Visconti may also fancy their chances. Especially when the hills will be more of a factor than the cobbles.

Vantomme, Veelers, Nepomnyachsniy or Steegmans were always going to like this race. Two stages that suit those riders and maybe even a chance to go for the GC with a less selective opening stage.

Haussler may even aim for this hilly stage, so should be considered a real threat. Back-in-shape Maksimov or also Rasmussen will love the panflat third day.

Starting with Bibby, who may be a surprising choice for some managers here. In a less selective opening stage, he may be a serious contender though.

Same goes for other less stronger punchy TTlers like Koren, Westra or Boaro. While those pure TT-guys like Ford/Olman or Ligthart are here to pray for a miracle and hope for a stage-win.

3 leaders here for us, in Haussler (can climb and cobble, plus a good sprinter), Turgot (can sprint and cobble reasonably well) and Mazur (can TT). Hope for a decent result and a not too selective first stage. Great preview tsmoha Smile

tsmoha
Ups, forgot to add Turgot here Wink Might have missed a few other names, so sorry for this!

I am hoping we'll be covered if racing gets tough on stage 1 with Baugnies and if less so, De Maar should be there.

Vantomme should hopefully get a stage win, and we should have a strong leadout for him.

We actually have a rider for every discipline here! If we could get a top 10 on every stage, that would make this a complete success.

Hmm, good preview again, but the startlist scares me Pfft
Changed my sig, this was getting absurd.

Only a midly interesting race for Puma to follow with only Gazelle, Jaguar and Oz touted as opposition for our predicted rankings range.
Though that said, I fear you raced stage 1 until your TTers hung on Wink

Lazy, yes. But on my mobile, where editing is annoying Wink

As for my TTlers... Guess it would take hours or days to wait for riders like Ford or Olman to survive a hilly stage plus cobbles Grin No spoiler though, of course!

Great preview!

I like this race. It has cobbles and hills and it's not obvious what kind of rider is going to win. It might even be a TT'er who can hang on indeed.

If stage 1 is very selective we'll ride for Nuyens. If it's slightly selective, Steegmans will be our leader. If it's not selective at all, Westra might be our best bet.

Top favourite is Franzoi in my eyes.

I think the first stage looks hard enough for a selection. It really does depend on how well the the super cobblers do at breaking it up I suppose.

I have a feeling the TT will be important for minor movements only.

Not at all sure about Bibby's schedule this season. There's a few gambles, such as this.

Here it came down a choice between a 5 TT/hill stage race, and this plus Isle of Man TT. This can work if the cobbles don't do anything, but PCM13 is perhaps not like that, and the preview seems to have given that away by the fact that the cobblers are the GC contenders!

Lagab could be an interesting factor though, if cobbles are decisive, and he goes with the moves.

Wrote the preview before the actual racing, so this is just a guess Wink Wasn't sure where to put Bibby - decided to underline his TT-skills instead, not forgetting to mention his existing cobbled-skills Wink

Strange to see Gyurov classed as a TT-specialist, usually he's just outclassed my a mile. This race has cobbles so all in behind Geraint. Hilly stage 1 could be tough, but he did ok in Bahir Dar. Stage 2 would be interesting, either late attacks or a handy sprint kick could help out.

Not a part of this race but great report!

Utter shite. Haussler dropped, riders like Bibby and Danacik not. Waste of 4 race days.
