This year's 'Tour of Malaysia' is equally divided in three flat and three mountain stages.
Stage one offers an early KoM prize followed by 120 flat kilometres.
Sadly, a recent landslide made some roads of stage 2 impassable.
Looking for an alternative route would have been too time-consuming and might have threatened the riders due to the lack of sufficient security measures.
Therefore, the organizers decided to simply use the same route as stage 5 as those roads are already closed off and prepared.
The last third of the stage is dominated by a huge climb which starts easy, but the slopes gently rise until that impressive ramp with percentages close to 20%.
There is a short, but similarly steep hill right on the bottom of the downhill before the riders have to go over several further lumps for a slight uphill finish.
Stages 3 and 4 are opportunities for the sprinters again, although they have to get over a Cat. 1 climb in the former first.
The final showdown of the overall favourites is going to happen on the last two stages.
Number 5 is - again - the same stage as the second. Riders know the course now, so expect more aimed attacks as everyone was able to pick their favourite spot to accelerate.
The last day of racing gives us two categorized climbs and one uncategorized close to the finish.
While the Cat.1 has some flat parts to recover, the subsequent Cat.2 certainly has the steepest slopes of the race.
Any rider making it over the last incline with a gap only has a short downhill left to end the race in style.
Let's have a look at the GC candidates first.
Oldie Denis Menchov looks to add another stage race win to his palmares in what might be one of his last ManGame appearance with decent stats.
Daniel Moreno has the advantage of having great sprinting abilities, which should help him in the decisive stages as well as giving him a shot at bonus seconds in the sprint stages. The latter looks unlikely though as half of his Iberia team is dedicated to sprinting as well.
Below those two, there is a whole bunch of similar climbers.
BNCR fields a double header with Rojas and Esquivel with Mexican Colex able to support or sneak away, while Boeing and MTN rely on Colombians Parra/Colorado and Rodas.
A surprise attack on one of the stages might allow Rudaskov, Landa, Naibo, Feillu, Alizadeh or Mestre to win a stage and/or the GC as well. At the very least, pay attention to all of them, as one well-timed attack can decide the race.
The three possible sprint finishes attracted most top sprinters from the Continental division as well.
Probably the best sprinters present in Malaysia are Guillen and Lay, who can count on support from experienced leadouts Morales and
Anton Martin.
Good bets for a stage win are MTN's Abdallah (supported by Day), Polidova (Buts), Renshaw (Torckler) and Gavazzi (Saramotins).
Look out for Speirs, Petit or Jang to latch on to some of those sprint trains to get into the mix as well.
If you want to root for local riders, you obviously have to look for Sauber jerseys as they field the only Malaysians in their home tour in sprinter Salleh and climber Rusli, who might even make the front group on the mountain stages.

Perhaps Bakari is a stage racer? Could be his chance to shine!

Buts is the 2nd rider for Poli if everything goed right...
Train should be Buts>Ansons>Polivoda... (Polidova? Nice one... )
Hope Mestre can surprise and win us the first GC ever...

Hoping for a good result from Rodas. Also, I really think a stage win from Abdallah or Day is a necessity.

Nice previews, btw. This one and Challenges Phospha-something
When can we expect the first report (with this and Challenges)? I am asking because I'll be offline for 3 weeks starting tomorrow

Both Phosphatier and the first stage here should be up tomorrow afternoon, and I plan to get 2 stages out per day afterwards.
I might get both done by tomorrow morning if you really need that though

That would be awesome, but there's no rush - what ever suits you. I can only see the rest of Jelajajajajajah in December anyway

Fantastic preview, going to be tense mountain stages could be a complete clusterf*** but I fancy the last at least will cause a big enough selection? Menchov is my favourite.

I hope it causes some splits. But tbh, I think we'll se big bunch sprints on mountain stages. Moreno has a good sprint stat for that.

not sure what to expect from this one, Alizadeh showed us he had the quality in the mountains way back in the middle east when he was let down by his TT skills or lack thereof.
not sure whether I want Rusli to go for the KOM jersey or to play super domestique for Alizadeh.
all in all a top 10 should be a realistic goal though if things go right we could end up stealing a top 5 here.

Well, I was only able to get this done before going to sleep.
Sorry for that inconvenience, but I'm pretty sure the result makes up for it

I got PCM'd again... So awesome...
Now I need Mestre to be aggressive like in the Middle East Tour.
Atleast Poli was the fastest, so gives some hope on a stage win...

Amazingly Naibo hasn't managed to disappoint me through 1 stage, seems like a new personal best for him.
Speirs poor in the sprint, but I haven't given him much help. Nice to see Waeytens continue his attacking ways from Avenir, a KoM jersey would be kind of awesome.

Please Menchov please don't disappoint me...
It must be a win. There are good rivals and Moreno to point one out it's a huge opposition but Menchov has to win.
I hope we will be able to cope with all the attacks from the GC contenders that lost some time in the first stage.
