Tour do Rio Discussion
FroomeDog99
The next Continental stage-race to take place is the 2013 Tour do Rio, which takes cycling to Brasil. Some of the best Continental riders make the trip to South America to try and secure a good result in the inaugural edition of the race.

i806.photobucket.com/albums/yy344/DailyManGame2011/2013%20Routes/ct_c2_tourdorio.png

The route brings five stages to the table in total, of which four are flat. The exception comes on stage three, which has a flat finish but also has a tough hill to climb in the last 20 kilometres which could shake up the race.

That stage means that both sprinters and puncheurs feature heavily in the startlist, which tells us that 10 teams will race here. Of those three are from the higher Pro-Continental division. None of the teams are Brazilian, but Repsol are from bordering Venezuela while Prio are from Portugal, where they speak Portuguese like in Brazil.

The team that has to be mentioned first though in the preview is Gazelle. They have dominated this division so far this year, and they'll have the home crowd's support as they are lead by i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/gzl_zps14c119b5.png Duarte Nardin, who should be very dangerous during stage 3, combining good climbing legs with a great sprint. Supported by a cast of great domestiques, he must be the big favourite here to take home victory.

Another big overall favourite is i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/icv_zps83bfa75e.png Sánchez Gonzalez, who is Iberia's leader here. He is a better climber than Nardin, but lacks the same sprint so will have to drop the Brazilian to have a chance of victory. He also has some good support which should serve him well.

Behind them there are a few other riders who could oust the sprinters on that one hilly day, with i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/fcb_zpse1da305d.png Grau, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/mtn_zps3dcc4d70.png Ngue and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/bcr_zps86f2c872.png Firsanov being other standout riders who lead their respective teams. They'll have to beat the sprinters though, who'll want a bunch sprint on that flat finish.

Talking of sprinters, lots make the journey here to this predominantly flat race. A standout sprinter here is i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/bcr_zps86f2c872.png Guillén, who is the fastest man on paper in the sprints. His BNCR team also brings the makings of a strong train, so the Costa Rican could be looking at a good few results.

Providing opposition is a whole host of riders who could surprise in the sprints. i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/prp_zps2240497e.png Santos did well earlier in the season at this level when he won the Volta ao Alentejo while i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/mtn_zps3dcc4d70.png Day, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/rep_zps8fe99b28.png Andriato, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/bvp_zps98bbf78a.png Chicchi, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/icv_zps83bfa75e.png Anton Martin, i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/PCT/wwe_zpsb6c72e16.png Damrow and i439.photobucket.com/albums/qq112/Gustavovskiy/microjerseys/CT/vtf_zps1d97281a.png Crespo all lead their respective teams on this front. There should be some good battles over the race when the sprints come around.

Fudge, more Gazelle.

Small startlist should lead to some decent points. However it's Boeing, and frankly we couldn't buy a win right now. Our last (and only!) one came back in February.

Of those with a real chance, sprints should be close, leading to a great race. Yes Gazelle are there with Nardin, but it's certainly not as clear cut as some of their other races. Looking forward to this one.
Might give me the motivation to write The Sound #3

Might be an exciting race, might be a boring one.

Looking on the profiles this might end in a 30 rider group fighting for the bonus seconds.
I though hope it will be more selective.

Expect another huge Gazelle result here. Wink

Oh hell, how did I miss this race in my planning? Would suit Cardoso pretty well...

Interesting race. I obviously hope for fast and selective racing. Then we have a good chance with Nardin or Furdi.

If it all comes down to bonus seconds we will have a hard time. Crowd favorite Nardin might surprise there though.

Looks like Chicchi got the message. Pulls out a great ride for a solid 2nd there. He is fighting for his contract now, so heres hoping he can find that little bit more.

Great race from Prio, really setting that up perfectly for Santos, how did very well to deliver. Nice close start, which bodes well for a good race

Very good leadout by Prio indeed. Congrats.

The breakaway wasn't very strong, so there was no high pace in the hilly part of the stage. Considering that, 9th for Nardin is a decent result here.

Nice win by Santos.

We should go for some BA to win something in this race.

This looks like a bad time to have my computer broken. Great victory. Wasn't expecting to take the victory right in the first stage. Thanks guys this was a hard fought one. We're looking forward to the next sprints.

Looking at the startlist Nardin looks to have the favoritism, with Samu close by. However this race can provide a very random outcome imo. Giving there's only one tricky stage. Hopefully it'll be enough for the puncheurs.

Sorry guys, been aiming for a report every other day but have been really busy today, and won't have time to finish stage 2 tonight. Will try to make up over the next couple of days.

No worries.

Another mediocre sprint from Day. He really has been unimpressive this year. Quite frustrated that we didn't get anyone in the break, it's our only real chance of winning anything. Hopefully we can do something better in the next stages. Congrats to Prio for the wins Smile

And kudos to FD for another great report Smile

King of the Mountain for another day, Tankink! That's good. And the temporary leader of the team ranking... Surprised by that one. Hoping Tankink or Gottfried keeps scoring KotM points. Maybe even a stage win!

Wow another great victory. This race has already given me what I had expected of it, and it's only day no.2. From now onward I can't complain if things start spiraling down.

I'm curious to see what's in store for stage 3. Also great reports so far Froomedog Wink You keep the suspense till the very end of the stage.

Good reports!

Stage 3 looks like the race decider, and it will be very interesting to see if the puncheurs are allowed to gap Santos. Looking forward to see how teams like Iberia and Gazelle handle the hills.

TheManxMissile
One plus point from this season (and it might just be the one at this rate...) is that the Bulgarians can mix it up. Mihaylov with another strong performance has really stood out. Shame Chicchi has been poor at best.

Bring on Stage 3 and it certainly has a lot of interesting potential. Just hoping it doesn't turn into another Gazellefest

No problem Froomedog Wink

Really happy with that result. Pitty we didn't take the lead, but no complaints. I knew we had 2 cards to play with Rodas and Ngue, but turned out better than expected Smile

Ouch I feel sorry for you Froomie. Having all that work all over again. It makes me appreciate so much more all the effort you guys put into this.

Furthermore, after a report like this I don't mind waiting at all Grin Great news for us, we might actually have a shot at the GC after today's result. Brilliant work by the team and wonderfull effort by Santos to hang on with the front group. Now if only that tiny little mountain on the next stage were to disappear, that would be perfect Pfft

Also congrats aidanvn. I reckon MTN, Iberria and Gazelle deserved another outcome to this stage. Can't say that I'm nhappy though.
