In 3d mode what does the furthest right button when you right click on someone do?
I tried it to keep up with Sagan assuming it meant you stay close to them, but all it lead too was my sprinter falling off the back.

It should do what you assumed.
First click your rider, then right click Sagan and click "take position".

Not the follow button, it is too early for that, the one like a concentric circle.

It does put your rider near where the selected rider is, maybe your rider wasn't able to go fast enough to catch up to Sagan for some reason? Form, talent, fatigue or otherwise.

He was good, polish nat. Champ, 81sp 73fl and this is early in the race, his bars were still full and he has 91 fitness so I don't think it's that, maybe just he got blocked through the whole stage......

My experience was, it would take sometime before your rider reaches the destination, esp. if he's far. Never click the maintain here position to a rider, if he is close enough, your rider will simply fall back.
