From opening young cyclist files you can see how the limits should work. i.e potential 8 = limit MOU 81-85, potential 7 = limit MOU 79-83, potential 6 = limit MOU 77- 80 etc. (those figures aren't exactly right as haven't opened young cyclist files since PCM12).
With that in mind, one would be hoping that Froome, Nibali, Rodriguez, Valverde (all given a potential of 3 so that they won't improve) wouldn't improve at all. So to check, I started a career and opened up the the created career database. I discover that the above riders have the following limit to their MOU stat:
So, Froome, Valverde and Nibali have the potential to get much better despite have a low potential. Why is this?
It seems assigning potential values to well established riders is all but pointless. Assign them a low potential and they still improve, assign a high potential and they sometimes don't improve. This has been a problem on all previous games and for me, ruins it after 3 seasons with often 20+ riders being over 80 for MOU. Each time I start a career I have to open the saved file to edit the maximum stats of riders to ensure a realistic game, but this removes a lot of the enjoyment and unknown from the game.
It seems potential does work with riders yet to near their peak. f.e
Aru: MOU 74 HIL 73 Potential 7 with limits of MOU 82 HIL 80
Drombowski: MOU 74 HIL 72 Potential 7 with limits of MOU 81 Hil 78
On a side note, it's also strange to me that Wilko Kelderman is always designated a time trialist in game despite having 75 MOU and 74 TT. As such, he never flourishes into a grand tour prospect. I started 10 separate careers to test this and every time his MOU limit was 76 and TT limit was either 81 or 82. Seems that there is no reason for him not to be considered a stage racer or a way to stop this happening.

i agree its annoying but i was Sky and Froome had 85 in mountan so i lowerd him, same with Quintana he moved form 78 to 80 so when the TD started i put his mnt up two 82 so it was realistic. You have to edit alot for the stupid transfers anyway so dworry
It seems you've missed my point. I'm not trying to gauge peoples opinions on how I've rated the cyclists, but the result of assigning certain potentials.
A riders limit to a certain stat has always been calculated by using his specialisation and potential. e.g a rider with a TT specialisation and potential 6 would have a TT limit of 77-80 with all other scores within a lower designated stats range as is demonstrated within the young cyclists files.
Therefore assigning say Tony Martin a potential of 6, should result in TT stat (83) not growing any further by virtue of it already exceeding the maximum potential stat associated with a TTer with a potential of 6 (77-80). But for some reason it doesn't work like that. Assign him a potential of 1, 3, 6, 8 or whatever and his maximum TT stat always seems to be higher than his originally assigned TT stat of 83.
Consequently Froome with a MOU stat of 83 and potetnial of 3 should no way be able to increase to 85.
If I (along with most other PCMers) have got this wrong, please explain to me how you limit the maximim stats of the top riders.
Kelderman develops in a stage-racer most of the time at me. I play with an (edited) Daily DB as well, only edit on him I've done is +1TT & +2REC(Hmm, last one could be it though).
Believe me, I'm always paying special attention to Kelderman's development
But I get what you're saying and it strikes me as well, very annoying. Normally, I just edit those limits a bit back when starting a career, but it's not really a fun thing to do...

Same here. Its not ideal though as I want a bit of variation and surprise such as Pinot possibly becoming a sensation (82 MOU) in one game and not progressing much further in another (78). But at the same times I don't want Froome and Nibali being 85 and 84 respectively. Pain!
Yeah Wilko is a beast. I'll try the Recuperation edit to see if it forces him to be a stage racer.
