It’s with great pleasure to see Int. Österreich Rundfahrt once again on the cycling calendar.
It was raced for the first time in 2008 when home favourite Bernhard Kohl won it as the race was part of the Continental Tour. Great climbers like Andy Schleck, Damiano Cunego and most recently Jose Alarcon (2012) have all put their name to this traditional race with an overall win.
As usual the race favours climbers, though, this year there is only one mountain stage as the race is a C1 Continental race. Though, the mountain stage isn’t just like any other mountain stage. Stage 2 ends with the legendary Kitzbüheler Horn, which averages about 14 percent over 8.2 kilometers.
This year’s edition is definitely a tricky one, as hilly stages awaits the riders on stage 1, 3, 4, 5 and 6. Just to underline that this is a race for the stage racers stage 7 is a 24 kilometers long time trial before the race ends with the only stage for sprinters as stage 8 should be a mass sprint in Wien.
Looking at the start list you must admit it’s a lot weaker than last year, though, in 2012 the race was a .HC race, which explains the lack of world class climbers.
Suaza
is on paper the best climber in the race, but his abilities on the hills are questionable, and with no less than five hilly stages the overall win could be too much to ask from the Colombian. Though, if he gets the yellow jersey after the second stage it will certainly be hard for anyone to take it from him. The French team has also brought
Levarlet
for the hilly stages. He’s the best puncheur in the race, meaning Bouygues Telecom have a card to play on all of the tough six opening stages.
There hasn’t been much to cheer for for the Austrian crowd in the past editions, but this year Magna-Ryanair hopes to change that as they’ve brought home hero
Rohregger
as their captain for the race. He’s strong on the mountains and on the time trial bike, which makes him a serious contender for the overall podium.
Iglinski
Efimkin
lead LukOil-Rostelekom’s campaign in Austria. Especially Iglinski should be a rider to watch on Kitzbüheler Horn, and with help from Efimkin he could very well end up with the win on this year’s Queen Stage.
Bibby
has had a great season and hopes to continue his show of form especially in Tirol on the opening days. His strong sprint could prove handy in the fight for stage podiums and bonus seconds. He’s a great stage racer, and his proven abilities on the time trial bike means he’s a rider the others will need to gap before the seventh stage.
Swedbank-PEAB
are threatened by relegation, but the Swedes have lined up a strong team for this race.
Eltink
should be their captain for the general classification, but
Hoogerland
should also be a rider to watch.
Speaking of the rankings, promotion hunters Tinkoff Bank-Rosneft OJSC have brought
Kunshin
Kolesnikov
to fight for a top five overall. Just like Bibby Kolesnikov has a strong sprint which he might use for a stage win or two in a smaller group on the hilly stages.
Cataldo
haven’t had an outstanding season considering his abilities. This race should suit him close to perfect, and the Italian must be eager to prove himself after a bad Tour of Eritrea.
Hesjedal
Ardila Cano
Quintana
Vrecer
are captains for their teams. Looking at their abilities they should all be satisfied if they can break into the top 10 here in Austria.
With five hilly stages a couple of puncheurs also deserves mentioning. In addition to Levarlet,
Schreurs
stands out as a rider to watch.
Der
is also a dangerous rider in such a field. He has a strong finish, and he’s a reasonably good climber. He could gift his team a stage win during these days in Austria.

Nice preview, ember! Cunego, Schleck, Alacorn.. Big names there in the history books.
Kitzbüheler Horn should be fun, even though the real 2013 route is way more interesting than this here. But i am looking forward to a nice race anyway

Lots of hilly stages, who knows what we will be served up here.
Bibby has been good on occasion this year and if he can limit his losses on stage 2 he could be dangerous grabbing time bonuses and with a decent TT.
Could also be a very lucrtative race for CTour team Magna, who have been pretty weak in the C2 races.

Some good, and a little bad in that one for us
Really delighted that Schrangl was able to take the stage - he's been great this season - nationality bonus probably helped him beat some of the better puncheurs.
Rohregger losing time is a bit of a disaster since I think he was a pretty legit threat at the overall - hopefully he shows up at the Kitzbüheler Horn and can get a good result there - doubt Schrangl can do more than fight bravely to prevent a huge timeloss, even with the leaders jersey

Well, not really any GC ambitions - going for stage wins with Schreurs, making it a big shame he missed out on the good opportunity on stage 1.
Not much to say about the mountain stage. Lost more time than expected, but not too important anyway. |

Poor from Bibby there. Really a race he could have challenged for GC at, but his usual consistency has deserted him it seems

So close on the first stage, I thought Acevedo was going to make it, and at least one of my GC riders stayed with the front group.
And then good to see Ardila hanging tough on the second stage, hopefully this is a good sign for the rest of the race.

Congrats to Kappa Eni for that great win.
Really looking forward to Villella next season, when he steps up to ride for my team. |

Intresting race so far. the timetrial will be decisive but don't underestimate Sonntagberg.
Cool to see Magna doing so well in their home race!

Great ride by Villela in a race i almost already had given up on. A stage win and leading the point competition should give us enough points for this race not to be a complete waste of race days. |
