SpiderTech - Cervélo | It ain't over 'till it's over
fernando97
So, as some of you may know from my previous thread, I decided to bring this story back to life. In order to achieve that, I'll need your "help". You only need to create your rider, nothing more.

The official team presentation by TMM!

Bonjour mes amis,
So I had this weird dream last night. I dreamt that I had previously ridden for SpiderTech but as someone else, and twice at that. Usually only going so far as the Giro, and also including many of the current riders one the team…. Strange right?

Anyway, of course I am Thomas Hinault…. No relation! So don’t even ask… I am from Perpignan and grew up in and around the Pyrenees. As such I am an out-and-out climber. I’ve done some racing at lower regional levels but nothing at this scale. It was at an amateur MTT that I was scouted by the team and I was more than happy to become part of the project.
That’s enough about me for now. We’ve been doing some preseason work as a team so I’ll run through some first impressions of my teammates for the upcoming season.

Jean-Pierre Dupont: He’s French so of course we have that in common. Beyond that not a lot… Jean-Pierre is a time trial specialist so we have totally different preferences when it comes to training and a race. He’s not bad at what he does, one of the best in France, and is certainly happy to help others.

Maxime Oget: The third of our little trio. Maxime likes the cobbles. He grew up in the north of France where the short steep hills are, peppered with the rough roads, so it’s no wonder he can handle them. He’s an organised person that likes to plan ahead. Don’t spend much time with him so can’t say more than that.

Daniel Velasco: Is a Spanish puncher. He grew up and developed in the shadows of the Pyrenees so has many of the same skills as I do. As a result we spend most of our training time together in the hills and mountains.

Blaise Miller: Blaise… Blaise… Again he is a climber but many think he will be the next Armstrong, but without the drugs obviously. He usually comes out with Daniel and I for training and I have to say he is a great guy. Always the first there to help out with any problems on or off the bike, he is also the first to get stuck in and kick start some fun.

Christopher Mpofu: Another of the teams’ climbers is Chris. So of course a lot of his training is done with me the other lads I’ve mentioned. He moved to Europe a few years ago looking for greater opportunities and quickly found himself at home bike racing. Still adjusting to life in Europe and as a cyclist it is refreshing to have him around… sorry for the practical jokes…

Ryan Sullivan: The last of the pure climbers, Ryan. He is simply irrepressible. Ryan always wants to go as fast as he can, which is great at times. He’ll happily pull the front of a group or just go away alone, but he does not always know when to do which moves. But get him off the bike Ryan is a bit shy and reserved. We try and involve him but it’s a struggle… until someone mentions Whisky... damn Irish.

Mike Pye: He is the man for the classics. Mike really goes well over the rough roads, almost entirely thanks to the massive power he can generate. It must be said that Mike is not the best tactically; in fact he’s one of the worst, but that power! It makes up for a lot of the problems, which also means he can get over those sharp hills often found in the same races. Yet somehow with all that power his finishing kick is a bit lacklustre. Finally he does have a fair amount of bad luck and often hits the deck, but somehow manages to push through and stay smiling.

Gary “Sutty” Sutton: Oh my god he won’t shut up! Gary always has something to say about everything! But don’t think that makes him annoying, Gary is one of the nicest people if a bit over the top. A real up and coming rider he has serious ambitions to one day be the best stage racer. Wiggins and Froome best watch out! Right now he lacks the endurance to challenge and is just a helper.

Tim De Vries: Tim is flat workhorse. In many ways he takes after Danny Pate, without the godlike powers. He can, and will, pull the front of a race all day on flat terrain, and can also go well over cobbles. Unfortunately I haven’t spent a lot of time with Tim so don’t really have anything else to say about him…

Pieter De Vries: The other De Vries is Pieter. He is a similar rider who will pull on the flat roads. Unlike Tim, though, Pieter prefers the time trial to cobbles. Must say I do know that Pieter is Frisian and proud of it… don’t ever get that wrong… I did… once… never again…

Wesley Hoogenboom: Wesley is another Dutchie. He is the teams headline sprinter having grown up on the worlds flattest country (well, almost). Probably his biggest weapon is his ability to get over the hills and cobbles. Combined with his sheer speed it makes Wesley a deadly weapon. Great guy overall, if a little obsessed with certain other riders.

Vegard Hansen: The teams Norwegian is Vegard. He is most likely to be Wesleys’ main lead-out man at various points, but he can comfortably hold his own in a fast finish. Unlike the main man Vegard does struggle over cobbles and climbs. He also doesn’t have the endurance for a long race either but that will come with time and experience. Of course like all Norwegians he is a bit crazy but in a good way that is usually fun.

David Banyai: The first of a set of Hungarians is David. David is a sprinter and has a reasonable finishing speed. He is fairly quiet guy and spends a lot of this time with the other Hungarians so I can’t say much about him other than he is a true cycling purist.

Zoltan Jakab: Jakab is the teams’ second best stage racer. Pretty decent across all the necessary disciplines some good results are in reach, even if that big win might not be yet. Jakab is certainly happy to get involved with the team which is always good. He also seems to get more than a fair share of luck when it comes to racing and competition.

Benji Nagy: Benji is an Ardennes specialist. He just loves the sharp hills of northern Europe and does go rather well on them. He doesn’t have the stamina for the big classics yet but shorter days you have to keep an eye on him. As another Hungarian he does get on well with the team management.

(Mate Gombocz: Mate is definitely the managers’ favourite rider. He is a real teammate and will pull a peloton for several days if needed. He will also jump in well during a team time trial. Mate is always happy to offer up any help he can and is just a really friendly guy. He does work closely with the team management and is the main liaison with them.)
Editor's note: Now replaced with Tomasz Kowalski, who is a last minute pickup for us.

Yoo-suk Kim: Kim… He has a history, which all stems from his heritage as North Korean. I won’t get into it and just focus on him now. Some would call him cowardly, a wheel-sucker, others would call him calculating. I call him (insert brothers name). Very good time trialist thanks to a combination of technique and power. The power sees him manage hills, which does make him a threat for some smaller races. Bit of a nutter though…

Thabo Jengo Sithembile: Thabo also has history. Life hasn’t been easy for him, and I guess that is why he enjoys, yes enjoys, the cobbles. His big goal is to win Paris-Roubaix, but for now he will be working for Mike in those races. Thabo is no stranger to hard work and will bury himself for anyone as long as they will do the same for him. He has big dreams and I hope he can achieve them.

Nick Van der Velde: Nick is overall a strong rider, with his best coming out on the cobbles. He can also hold his own on the hills and in the time trials, making him a valuable asset. I’ll admit I haven’t spent a lot of time with Nick so I don’t really have anything else to say about him.

Kelly “Swiss” Verbier : Kelly is a very similar rider to Nick. He goes well over cobbles, hills and in time trials. He is just a good overall team player. Again I haven’t spent much time with him but I can say that Kelly does what he thinks. He gets an idea and he does it. It’s good to see enthusiasm but sometimes it could be better directed.

Kristjan Puskaric: Kristjan Puskaric… He is the big man on campus, the star of the team. And a right pain in my ass. He’s very good yes but my god he knows it. He really wants people to work for him and has a bit of an attitude about it. Personally I don’t get on with him that well but I know there are those in the team who do. Put it down to clashing goals.

Armin “Magic” Mujagic: Armin is a top level domestique. He can pull over the mountains hills and time trials. But he does also love to get involved in the action himself and will put in attacks if possible, despite being unlikely to grab a big GC win. Armin is quite active and happy to join in with whatever people are doing, but can be a bit naïve.

Filip Dasko: Filip is another climber, so I have spent a fair amount of time with him. He’s been cycling for years and knows what he’s doing. He does have ambitions to become a big leader but he knows that he will have to spend some time working for others first. Really a great guy who’s a lot of fun to go training with and can nearly keep up with me… nearly.

Bob “Bobby” Bobson: Bobby is another part of the cobbles section of the squad. Unlike others his ability on the stones comes more from technique rather than power. Outside of cobbles he isn’t great at anything. Not that it stops Bobby trying to convince you of the opposite. Bob is the most confident member on the team, and this can at times lead to a lot of arguments. But he is a good guy at heart.

Daggen “Dagger” Jensen: Daggen is a good sprinter. His top speed is respectable if not outstanding, but he couples it with an ability to get over hills that many other sprinters envy. Daggen is also very proud to be Swedish and also gets on well with Vegard. Quite a helpful guy he knows quite a bit about bike mechanics which is a great help on long training rides.

Mitch Thompson: Mitch has a fairly simple goal, be the best New Zealander in cycling. He certainly can get there thanks to a good sprint capability. He is also very handy on the downhill, if not so much on the up parts. He also knows that to get to the top he has to do some work for others now. A nice guy to chat with but does take a bit of encouragement to join in.

Alex Fischer: Alex is the weakest rider on the team but that’s down to age and a lack of experience. Hoping to be a top class puncher he spends a lot of time with and learning from Nagy. Alex is a cool guy I’m happy to hang out with especially when you see the effort he puts into working for the stronger guys on the team.

Jeffery Bakker: Last but not least is Jeffery. A pure time trialist Jeffery is still young and developing as a rider. He has a natural ability which is at the heart of his skills which I’m sure will grow with time. Off the bike he’s a fun guy who will jump into whatever anyone else is doing. It’ll take some time before he becomes a regular feature at the front but I can’t wait to see that day.

And I guess that is a quickish round up of the team. I’m basing this off what I’ve seen of them during the pre-season team events and training and I am yet to really get to know some of them. Still I can’t wait to get going with the season and spend more time with the guys. This season is going to be amazing, I can feel it.
Good luck to everyone, and Go Spiders!

Game Rules

After each stage the Directour Sportif will pick a rider, who gets the "Spider of the day" award. This gives the rider 1/2/3/4/5 point. I will make a scoreboard in the 3rd post, so you can follow your points. Oh and if you only have a domestique, then there is nothing to worry, domestiques can also get points for their hard work. It's possible that 5 riders share the points, but no half points. I hope the game is clear for everybody.

I advice to take domestiques, as you cant let yourself down. If you were a leader, you could only be disappointed, but being domestique, every victory is like being world champion
