Stage 6 and a return to the flat as the Giro begins the day in Forte dei Marmi and ends it in Piombino. In between is a climb up to Volterra to ensure the riders have something to do - but really they have a lot to do anyway, with this being the longest stage of the race.
Daniele Bennati is the standout sprinter in the race with two stage wins out of three, but while all his rivals took an easy ride over the past couple of stages, Bennati did not. Ben Swift could be well placed to make it 2-all then, and will be confident of doing so - while Erik Mohs and Juan Van Heerden each came close to winning a stage themselves. Plenty of other sprinters in the field too, all keen to make their presence felt.
The first breakaway attempt holds 9 riders, which tells you all you need to know - it isnt going to be allowed to get anyway.
Sep Vanmarcke
Tim Kennaugh
Jesse Sergent
Johann Tschopp
Salvatore Mancuso
Matteo Trentin
Dmitriy Gruzdev
Matteo Rabottini
Taylor Tolleson
And they do struggle to get clear. The peloton always seem to have a size of group in mind that they will allow away, and that is always going to be smaller than 9.
Next is the Wes Sulzberger move of the day, so that doesn't have much luck either. Especially with Brian Vandborg also present - another regular attacker who awaits his chance of a day out front.
Adrian Malori
Brian Vandborg
Wes Sulzberger
Jesse Sergent
Taylor Tolleson
A 3rd move goes, and this time they get away! The earliest an attack has been able to do so on a flat stage so far this race.
Timothy Vangheel
Oliver Zaugg
Cristiano Salerno
Lucas Schädlich
A curious tactic for time trialist Schadlich to enter the break on the day prior to the first individual time trial of the race. It probably won't help him in the long run.
Vangheel won an uncontested intermediate sprint, as they rode towards the 2nd category climb up to Volterra.
None have scored any KoM points yet in this race, and none are too interested in how many they are going to get. Cristiano Salerno leads over to maximise the defense of his teammate Efimkin's lead in the competition.
But that lead was put under threat of being reduced as Damiano Caruso chased after the 2 points for 5th over the line. But he was narrowly beaten by Carlos Betancourt.
20km to go and as usual, the break are well on their way to being caught.
Relaying at the moment are:
Marcel Kittel
Maciej Paterski
Nick Ingels
Nick Nuyens
Sébastien Minard
David Boucher
Jelle Wallays
Thomas De Gendt
Mickaël Delage
It's an odd sight to see the 2nd overall and best young rider in a race relaying on a flat stage. But then Jelle Wallays is a surprising holder of both positions, and won't be near either of them by the end of the race.
The break are safely caught, and this time the peloton are over to one side of the road. No risk of repeating the Stage 3 incident where on of the breakaway severely hindered Ben Swift.
The three 'lead' sprinters can be seen following each other, hugging the left hand side of the road. Swift ahead of Mohs and then Bennati. Not ideal for them really, as at this stage they are usually sat behind their leadout - waiting for the moment for the trains to take to the lead. Maglia rosa Yuri Trofimov is also up here, looking for a safe eventless stage.
And when the leadout trains do hit the front, only Pokerstars have got it right. Vesuvio have their train in place, but no Swift, while Puma are in a quite disorganised state right now and need to pull together quickly.
A long train of riders latch on to the Pokerstars line:
Martijn Maaskant
John Degenkolb
Erik Mohs
Gerald Ciolek
Michael Vanderaerden
Allan Davis
Kristian Sobota
Luke Rowe
Juan Van Heerden
Claudio Corioni
Maximiliano Richeze
Romain Vanderbiest
Vanoverschelde and Stauff are fairly well placed, while Swift still trails his leadouts, and Bennati looks lost without any team support.
John Degenkolb opens up the sprint, and it looks like we could see a new stage winner today.
Swift moves up to the wheel of Caethoven though, looking to use his teammate as a springboard, and at the same time leaving Bennati further behind.
Van Heerden and Stauff have launched their moves now already.
The early sprint trick is becoming quite a habit for Juan Van Heerden as he looks to move into the lead. It's a German affair against him as Gerald Ciolek gets the jump on Erik Mohs from behind Degenkolb.
Romain Vanderbiest is the man who takes the lead though - despite having had to come from a long way back. Ben Swift is now firmly in a strong position as he challenges Ciolek, with Mohs struggling to get going.
Racing on the opposite sides of the road, it is hard to tell who of Swift and Vanderbiest have the lead.
Looking dangerous behind them now are Luke Rowe and Allan Davis. Bennati is also sprinting now, can he charge past those infront of him?
Davis is looking particularly quick and is trying to make a late surge past Swift as the line nears.
Swift vs Vanderbiest vs Davis as a photo finish looms.
And the winner is...
Ben Swift!
Allan Davis must settle for 2nd - his move launched slightly too late - with Romain Vanderbiest 3rd and Luke Rowe 4th.
A strong 5th for Maximiliano Richeze while the best Lotto rider today is Gerald Ciolek in 6th. Theyre good at getting multiple riders into a good enough following position, but seem to lack the speed to really challenge for a top spot.
A disappointing 7th for Mohs, while a more surprising 8th for Kristian Sobota sees him beat former teammate Kobe Vanoverschelde. Michael Vanderaerden was 10th.
Which means Daniele Bennati could only manage 11th. A very poor day for him, and a blow for his Points classification hopes. He started the day with a 12 point lead on Swift, but the tables are turned now with a 20 point swing in Swift's direction.
