Rund um den Eschborn-Frankfurt Preview
May 1, 2013 : Europe C2 : Germany
This once regular hilly C1 classic has moved down to C2 division and a longer flat run-in towards the finish makes it now a "flat" rated classic instead of hilly. Previous winners included the beloved German Fabian Wegmann (2008 and 2012), Angel Vicioso (2010), and Philippe Gilbert (2011). All great punchuers, but now it's time for a sprinter to get their name next to these men we think.
The route illustrated above shows the course for the day's event. Starting in Eschborn the riders head through Frankfurt first and over the finish line before heading out to the longest climb of the day of Feldberg and Kittelhutte. From there it is two circuits up and around the steepest climb, Mammolshain. But before the riders can head back to the finish it's a quick u-turn back up to Mammolshain for one final climb. Then it's roughly 40kms of flat roads bring us through Eschborn and onward to the finish back in Frankfurt.
Steegmans is the man to beat according to the odds makers. He can hold his own through the hills and has a nice kick if the race does come down to a sprint. But BCR does have a backup plan if the hills are taken easy with fast man Guillen. Should be interesting to see which option they go with.
Die Berg Komt Er bring their sprinting core group of Rizza, Abakoumov, Duque, and Hochmann. Any four of them could compete for the win if they get over the climbs and they could be unstoppable if they decide to work together in one sprint train.
It's not very surprising to the see the German PCT Rothaus - Aegon considering it is the only German C2 race this season. They will rely on the Italian Cucinotta who is usually seen leading out Vantomme.
Dekkers, like most of the sprinters will want to see the climbs come and go quickly, and hopefully have energy left for the potential sprint.
Keough represents the other PCT team Amex and will get to lead the team in a sprint for a change since Kupfernagel and Farrar don't meet the restrictions. Keough is under the radar but is a little better in the hills then most sprinters here so that could be his key advantage.
Mehr-Wenige is here representing as German RR Champion and for all the punchuers that decided to stay home. He is by far the most interesting selection for this race as the race has catered to his type of riding as shown earlier in the preview. Can he make the sprinters work to get that bunch sprint or will he just be another face in the peloton taking up race days? I know the spectators present will be hoping to see an attack from their RR champion.
Magna have arguably the best hilly sprinter trio with Speirs, Belletti, and Demare. However they aren't the fastest men so they will be hoping the race is tough enough to drop some of the other sprinters.
That leads us to the last two teams who will both keep their eyes on their leading duos, Papok and Golas, Moren and Hansen.

It`s the only C2 race for me this year.
When Cucinotta comes over the hills, everything is possible. But I actually doubt so.
Geschke would have been a perfect rider for this race. Unfortunately not allowed here. |

Expecting Golas to do well here, if not there will be a serious inquest, we need a win or good result after failing at Glava Tour

Expectations high wherever Steegmans enter.
Can't see a Pucheur taking this with PCM12 hilly AI so it should be all set and ready for Steegmans.

Steegmans should take this. If his team doesn't work for Guillen instead. |

I think Guillen and Steegmans had one clash before, in a completly flat classic, where Guillen led Steegmans out. So with the harder race here I'm pretty confident that my team will lead-out the right guy. If not, this could turn into a total disaster

Given the way this type of racing has been disputed, do not believe Mehr-Wenige be able to get a good result. Still all my sprinters are here and with a completely flat final part hope they can join the fight for the final victory

Obviously rooting for Magna here. Demare might suffer from heing only third best sprinter once again, but I hope he plays an important part for them .

AMEX's development squad is riding here. Most of the C2 races we choose were 100% for expereince of our young riders, but here we have a solid chance to do well. Keough is a strong sprinter at the C2 level and his 2 lead our men are young Germans. We like our chances.

Very nice report, and a great lead-out from Guillen, even if it didn't go perfectly for BNCR.

Steegmans countinuing his I-cannot-win streak!!
Indeed a good lead-out from Guillen but he was forced to go way too early, same with Steegmans, mainly because the team wasted all their energy catching in break-aways!!

I believe Belletti was a rider I spotted to add last year, extremely welcome to see him winning.
Steegmans is getting used to the bridesmaid gowns, still solid points for Banco

Good Day for AMEX. Hasnaoui in the break, so lots of sponsor time, then Stoltz attacks late but could not get a gap. Keough was solid and finished 4th contesting all the way to the line. Our young sprinter Selig and Reinhardt lost too much over the hills to be any help to Keough at the end, but it probably who not have made any difference anyway.
Congrats to Belletti for a good win.

Yeah Steegmans has endet top 10 in every race he has been in so far, which I'm very pleased with. But just so frustrating that he never wins! Independent on the competition.

This was my only race this month and was hoping to get better results, especially by Van Loocke that once again disappointed. Still Irvine did well winning a top 10.

Congratulations to Belletti on taking the win.
Golas with a surprising strong sprint, I thought there would of been enough good sprinter to push him out of a top 10 place, but 6th is a decent result

Great race for us obviously with Belletti taking the win (he's been really solid for us this season) and getting Speirs and Demare in the top 10 is the icing on the cake.
My sprinters might not be the fastest, nor do they ever set up a train (not that I can blame them...) but they do fairly well on the more hilly sprint races.
