The Santos Down Under is the first World Tour Event in 2013 and deserves a own thread I think. It goes into it`s 15th edition and typically starts with an unofficial criterium in Adelaide to present the riders. Two days later the real race starts and for the first time it`s an even number of flat sprinter stages and harder stages, where puncheurs could be favoured over the pure flat men. So it might be more exciting than ever before. And even better there will be live coverage of all stages on Channel Nine this season.
Many top sprinters start their season in Australia before heading towards Europe in February. So the competition is incredibly good and will bring some very close finals. But due to the harder course, we might see a puncheur winning here as last year, where Simon Gerrans won his 2nd Down Under GC. And with the Willunga Hill Top Finish and 1-2 other harder stages it will be hard for the sprinters to dominate how they did in the years before.
People's Choice Classic

Sunday, 20th January 2013
Stage 1
Spoiler Prospect to Lobethal - 135km.
Tuesday, 22nd January 2013.
Stage 2
Spoiler Mt Barker to Rostrevor - 116.5km.
Wednesday, 23rd January 2013.
Stage 3
Spoiler Unley to Stirling - 139km.
Thursday, 24th January 2013.
Stage 4

Friday, 25th January 2013.
Stage 5

Saturday, 26th January 2013.
Stage 6
Spoiler Elder Park, Adelaide - 90km.
Sunday, 27th January 2013.
Not all teams have announced their startlists yet, so I will update this part from time to time. But due to it`s World Tour status we can expect all WT teams and one wildcard team, which is normally an Australian National Team.

I wouldn't be surprised if Gilbert won, but I would be concerned about EBH. |

Sadly we can already delete Ballan from the BMC startlist :/
I'm not sure about Gilbert's form, since he wasn't intended to be the leader for BMC (that would have been Ballan).
I'd think EBH has a good chance, but you can't underestimate the Aussies either (any information if Gerrans will target this race again?) |

It's gotta be the Aussies as favoruites coming. It's them that peak for this race and target it as biggest event of the year mostly.
I'd be surprised if EBH wins it seeing how long his season last year was ( began in TdU ended in Beijng ) and how long this one will be too for him. Anyway, it should be quite good racing.

Gonna put some money on De Gendt, the hills should be to his liking.
Changed my sig, this was getting absurd.

I don't think Ballan will be riding, honestly
(He's still on the startlist)

I honestly dont think De Gendt will do anything there I think that hills in Australia are more for pure punchuer like Gilbert. De Gendt is better on longer climbs. But I admit that on first race of the season is more about how hard they trained through the winter... |

De Gendt can take short hills pretty well, too, though.
He'll perform well there, no doubt, but I don't think he'll win.
If Gerrans will be racing, he's definitely got the edge.
The terrain looks quite tough in some races, it should be interesting. Since I'm only here since May and I feel like I was in the dark about cycling before I came here, is there live feed on the TDU or aren't there cameramen present at the race? |

Oh, great, simply love it. I'm definitely tuning in as much as possible! Though it couldn't come at a worse time, seeing as I have my first internship starting the 21th of January...

I think stages 1-4 and the Classic have the last 2h live. Stages 5-6 are 100% shown on Channel Nine.

Gerrans will be racing it again, is preparing for it doing the 4 stage Sun Tour on the Oz national team and the nationals so he should carry some fitness into it.

Had no idea Bobridge will be riding for Blanco in 2013. Favili and Marczynski as riders who can get a good result on the startlist above. Next to the usual suspecs EBH and Gilbert, who will probably have learned a lot after last season and should have trained enough this offseason, ofcourse.

Ok, the Willunga stage was good last year, but just repeating it is a bit dull.
Some more variety in general would be nice from the organizers at some point.
And it should be renamed Tour of Adelaide or something...
But i do like the race, mostly as its one of a very very very very few available easily to watch in the UK (thank you sky).
Aussies to do well.
Gerrans for GC. Goss and Howard i hope get some stage wins

Well, Gilbert trained hard last year, he just had a completely wrong training for him, making the stransfer to BMC. |

It will be interesting to see how Bobridge goes, will have some miles in his legs having done the nationals should lead to him putting in a good showing. He will be a different rider next season now that he is concentrating on the road
