Also, since yesterday's stage was already week 2, a thought: I've lost count of the times I've seen Valverde do that, accelerate in the last half a kilometer and pass a bunch of people. Most famously in 2003 and 2006 at Vuelta stages of course, but he does it so often.
It takes both an incredible anaerobic punch and an amazing intelligence for the exact moment to go.
