First held in 1933, the Urkiola Igoera is a CT tradition and for good reason. The Basque Country is the perfect region to hold a mountainous one-day race. And with only 149kms of racing the riders should be delighted with the relatively short route. Without question, the top climbers of the division are ready to battle it out once again for some valuable ranking points as we get ready to head into September.
Jose Alarcon headlines the favourites, and nobody by now would question it. Perhaps the signing of the off season, Alarcon has been unmatched in the mountains all season. With victories at Vuelta al Tachira, Corsica International, Subida al Naranco, and Int. Osterreich Rundfahrt, does he really have to prove once again he is best climber in the CT?
Gianpaolo Caruso leads the group that will try to stop Alarcon in his tracks. It will be a tough task for the Italian as many suggest he is a whole level behind Alarcon's climbing ability. But hasn't everyone been a pedal behind Alarcon all year?
Vespa - Aprilia - De Rosa bring their superstar climber Domenico Pozzovivo along with probably the best wing man any superstar could ask for with Matteo Carrara. They bring a lot of chemistry to the table after riding the Giro together and if they worked together could trick Alarcon and the other climbers to stealing the victory.
Fabio Duarte, the Colombian climber, plays more of the dark horse role with a few better climbers in the field. If he plays his cards right he could turn some heads and take the win through a cheeky attack. The rest of the climbers can't over look Duarte, or it might cost them.
Jurgen Van den Broeck has been out raced by the top climbers all season, will this finally be his major break through? If it is, it will take one lucky ride. A top 5-10 would be more of a realistic result for him.
Igor Antón holds all the weight of Spain on his shoulders being the only top Spanish climber to compete this year. The fans will try and push CSC-Orbea to victory on home soil, but can the crowds really make up for the climbing ability that Antón lacks against his competitors?
The second tier of climbers searching for a good result include,
Vladimir Efimkin
Richard Ochoa Quintero
Fredrik Kessiakoff
Thomas Lövkvist
Saul Raisin
Francis De Greef
Cerne looks like odd team out, but Emu Exports and Bpost shouldn't put to much confidence in their climbers either, all three teams best hopes might come from the breakaway. And to circle around to the front of the post, the race is only 149kms. So a breakaway could surprise everyone if not handle by the peloton the right way.

I thought long and hard about going to this one and am pleased to see that Pozzo doesn't run in to Valverde or even Rujano here. |

I just hope we're able to control the breakaway, with the favourites not being stuck behind breakaway riders on the climb. If the favourites are able to race against each other on the climb, for the win, this should be a great, great classic.
Hopefully Alarcon can deliver, I hope for a podium. |

I just request one thing, Caruso - don't screw up!
But I don't like to see Alarcon in every mountainous race. He has way too many racedays for my liking...

Top 10 would be more than accepted considering this field.

A strange one that from start to finish. I can live with two in the top 5 I suppose.
Nice report too. |

Brilliant win from Alarcon, he's just outstanding. I was afraid he had lost it when he attacked on the flat, but he was clearly strong. Great effort from our team too, keeping control on things. They're clearly professional, still riding fully commited for Alarcon eventhough he might be on his way out of the team.
Great report aswell, Mresuperstar, I truly enjoyed it. |

Can't be disappointed with fourth, although Caruso's early attack felt very unnecessary. This will still bring us some well needed points.
Alarcon is just unbeatable though. Another dominant victory for him.

Another disappointing performance by Van den Broeck, beaten by Carrara? That's simply not good enough.
Congratulations to Alarcon and Ember, they are really showing the way in the mountains - respect!

Had no expectations from this but that last crash was really good for my team since Vital could secure a top20 placing.
And I think it is about time someone stop Alarcon. The guy is a butcher
