Last year Jose Alarcon waited amongst a battle of attrition, then powered away to destroy the field - beating Riccardo Ricco by 2 minutes. This year Ricco has moved on to tougher races, and taken a maiden Grand Tour victory in the Giro. Alarcon remains firmly in the continental tour though, and is back to defend his title. He has the advantage of experience of the climb - all his rivals are here for the first time.
But will he even be the best Venezuelan? Jose Rujano is down as the favourite.
Then there's the Italian teams. Jurgen Van den Broeck will have support from Carlos Castano, while Italian Champion Gianpaolo Caruso is in the field, and there is also Fabio Duarte.
Returning to continental action after the Giro are Marco Marzano and Vadim Ratiy, while Gabriele Bosisio will be keen to prove a point having not been included in his team's Giro squad.
Igor Anton and Vladimir Efimkin both have hopes aswell, but the rest of the field may struggle to get a look in. Bpost and Proximus look somewhat out of place on this start list, with their squads!

Desperately need Caruso to score big here. I'm pretty hopeful however, as the startlist isn't as strong as I feared it would be.
A Top 5 would help our ranking position immensely.

I think that this could be literally the worst race for my team all year. A top 20 would be a blessing. I think I only picked it because I thought I would have VDB in my team.
I'm chucking Marzano out there as my bet.

I hope the favourites will be together over the climb, and then for some luck to see VDB take a win in a group sprint...
- It's a "Win" goal for Pirelli, but top 3 would be terrific too!

Might become a weird race. Can`t imagine that a solo win will appear again.
More likely a group of 20 or so sprinting for the win as the mountain is too far away from the line. |

I think Alarcon and Rujano will destroy the field on the mountain, but that 10-20 riders will come together again on the downhill, meaning we will have a random sprint for the win
That's what I think, though, I really hope Alarcon can pull out something special on the mountain, keeping a gap on the whole downhill. |

Pirelli hold that double whammy - can they hold Rujano and Alarcon?
I am going to back VDB for the win.

If a break goes early and builds up a decent lead, they might get over the top in front. |

OK I suppose from Bosisio. Guarantee if he comes in as part of a group he'll always be at the back.
Extremely weird finish. |

Oh how high my hopes were when Rujano/VDB caught Alarcon and co. then to him beaten by everyone
Good performance, only luck was missing - 5th and 9th is fine, though I had hoped for more. First goal not to be completed.
Fantastic win for Ferrari, who had expected that coming from anyone other than Caruso?

Wanted better, but with the results we have been getting lately I'm not surprised. Next season can't come soon enough

Great climbing from Alarcon! And I'm satisfied with third, when it became clear it would go down to a sprint, it was alway going to be a lottery, luckily Alarcon pulled a podium out of it. And that was another goal made, meaning we're having 2/2 now, which is great, as the tougher ones awaits.
Congratulations to Ferrari though, what a surprising win! |
