New Year, New Beginings

Hi,
This is my first blog of the new year, obviously. I met up with most of the british riders for a party down in Soho for new year, Brad, David, Ben, Mark were there. and Geraint stopped by just after midnight.
We had out first team meeting on the 3rd January. Dave Brailsford outlined our schedule for January, and gave us our early season training plans.
We have only one WorldTour race in January, the Santos Tour Down Under. There the riders will target stage wins, and perhaps the overall if we are lucky.
Before then Chris Sutton, Simon Gerrans, Michael Rogers will be competing in there national championships, and have a good chance of an early victory.
I will not be in the TDU, but will update you on the results after the race.
My first race wont be until March, so im off the train with our new trainer, Robert Millar!! He finished 2nd in the Vuelta and Giro in the 1980's, and it will be fantastic to learn from him. I will be training around Tuscany in northern Italy, were i'm based with some good climbs and nice weather.

Australien Nationals

Just got an email from Brailsford with the results of the races down under.
RR; Chris, Simon and Michael went to win, but were ultimatly unsucesful. A group of 7 went clear early, which Simon got across to with 10km to go. But he lost out in the group sprint, only scrambling to 8th. Robbie McEwen claimed his third national title. Michael headed the main field in 12th, whith Chris in 22nd.
ITT; Only Micheal entered this race, and despite a solid ride, missed out on a podium spot. He finished 4th 1'25 behind the winner Cadel Evans.
My early trainings not been going well, with heavy rain cutting short my rides. Still, its good to be back on the bike.

Santos Tour Down Under

Heres a quick report on my team mates exploits.
Stage 1; A low key day, Kurt tried to breakaway, but missed the right group, while we were swamped out of the sprint. Greg could only just squeeze into the top 30. Cavendish took the win
Stage 2; Again we struggled to get going today, Greg couldnt match the other sprinters. Farrar edged out Goss for the victory
Stage 3; Struggling with early form we turned our intentions to just gaining fitness, and Pozzato won the uphill finish
Stage 4; Farrar took his second stage win
Stage 5; Farrar made it 3 and looked good for a shot at the overall
Stage 6; Cavendish took the final win, and Pozzato held on to the leaders jersey
Not a great race for the team, but good weather. Better than here in Tuscany, where its rained almost all month.

Tour of Qatar

The first race of Febuary, in blazing sun and winds. This was a much better race for us.
Stage 1; Edvald did what he does best, netting our first win of the season, and Ian missed out on a top 10 by 2".
Stage 2; Alex was in the break, and hence we lacked some power for the sprint, with Edvald only coming 12th. JJ Haedo took the win
Stage 3; The team was back on form and piloted Edvald to second place, with JJ taking another win
Stage 4; A very late catch of the break, 1.1km, caught out Edvald who only managed 6th, while JJ took his hat-trick
Stage 5; De Vreese held off the peloton to take a solo win by one whole minute, placing him 2nd overall, while Edvald won the bunch sprint
Stage 6; Normal service resumed as JJ wraps up the overall and a 4th stage win, Edvald finishes 3rd on the stage and overall, while Stannard claims 12th overall.
Great ride by the squad in support of Edvald. Again the weather looked great, and still it seams bad here.
Gloomy and cold, but my ridings going well. Im impressing our new climbing coach, spaniard Anton, is liking my style. Ive met up for a few rides with Chris Froome, which normally turn into a childish race.

Omloop + K-B-K

Early season cobbles are usually a good hunting ground for the team, but with slow build form these could be tough.
Omloop; Flecha won this race in 2010, but was outclassed today. He got a top 20, but Boonen was unstoppable, winning by 1'45
K-B-K; Geraint was on form today, netting 7th in a hard fought finish. Hushovd won from Boonen in a 2 man sprint. Geraint out did 4 other to claim 7th. Flecha was well down the field, but turns out he is suffering from a cold.
Solid showings on the cobbles, but slightly dissapointing.

First Race Nerves

With March bearing down on us, so do the next round of WorldTour races. Paris-Nice will hopefully be a good one for us, with stage wins our target.
But for me its a trip to Italy. The race of Two Seas will be my first competitive race of the year. Not a long trip form my home down to the race, so i will hope for some good form. I've been felling good on my rides, and pleasing my coaches. My main focus will be aiding Brad, our designated leader. If i'm up to it, maybe a break or two as well. Again we would like some stage wins, but the overall is a real posibility.
My recent training partner Chris Froome is off the Paris-Nice, but i will be in good company, particularly with Brad.
I cant wait to race, and it will be good to test my TT skills as well.

Paris-Nice; Stages1-3

The French stage race that opens the European WorldTour season is always a hotly contested race. Gilbert is favorite to win this year, but a high class field will make for a good race, even if the route doesn't help.
Stage 1; A flat stage would be perfect for Edvald to get us off to a good start, which he did, finishing 2nd to JJ Haedo. This is looking like a season long battle between the two of them.
Stage 2; A bit of a surprise as a two man break held off the peloton. Lampres Bertagnolli won the stage, while Edvald won the main sprint to finish 3rd.
Stage 3; A sharp hill towards the end of the stage was inciting trouble. Zandio was in the break today, which was swallowed on the climb. Masciarelli opened the attacks, but was unsuccesful in getting a gap. Then Edvald, against Brailsfords wishes, attacked. He lead over the top by 20". He held this on the decent, and all the way to the line. Winning solo he moves into 3rd overall, and appears to have some good form.

I'm writing this from my hotel room, its quite early. Today is the start of my first race Tirreno-Adriatico. A team time trial awaits us, and we are carrying a label as one of the favorites to win today, no pressure then. I'll do what i can, but it will be up to the bigger guys to do the work, especially Brad. Anyways i need to go and start eating, see you on the other side!

Paris-Nice; Stages 4-8

Stage 4; Gilbert stated his intentions with a devastating attack to win the stage, Rigo and Michael were our best placed at 20th and 21st
Stage 5; Hesjedal kept the GC race close with a win, while Edvald inherited leadership with a top 20 finish
Stage 6; Edvlad went into the TT as one of the favorites. He obliged by destroying the field, winning by 30" over Hesjedal, and 40" over Martin!!
Stage 7; Gautier won from a break of 3 over the mountains, but Gilbert held on the the overall lead. Edvald picked up 1pt to secure his green jersey
Stage 8; Boom out sprinted his break partner to win, while Gilbert took the GC ahead of Hesjedal. Edvald wrapped up the points jersey. Michael finished 14th overall.

Brailsford was happy with the performance, 2 stage wins was what we wanted. He was a bit annoyed at not acheiving a top 10 finish, but compared to Tirreno he couldn't complain

Tirreno-Adriatico

The two seas was my first race of the year, and most of the other guys aswell. Brad, Chris, Christian, Lars Petter, Simon, Morris, Serge were my team mates. Brad was still getting over a cold, and none of us had any real form.

Stage 1; Our lack of form showed as our weak TT skills showed as we limped to last in the TTT 50" off of Garmins time.
i1117.photobucket.com/albums/k587/Average_Man/Kennaugh/PCM0001.png
Stage 2; Pozzato continued his run of luck with a win, whilst we all struggled to get going. I even inherited the lantern rouge at the end of the stage.
Stage 3; Farrar took the only mass sprint of the race, while we all managed to hold on to the peloton, just.
Stage 4; Pozzato took a second win, while Simon came 22nd, our highest finish so far
Stage 5; I tried an early attack, but couldnt get away. The stage was won by Cunego, but Brad moved up to 15th overall
i1117.photobucket.com/albums/k587/Average_Man/Kennaugh/PCM0005.png
Stage 6; Pozzato made it 3 wins, while Vino took the overall lead. Brad looked pretty comfortable for 15th
Stage 7; The short TT was won by Spartacus, and Brad held on to 15th overall, not bad considering
i1117.photobucket.com/albums/k587/Average_Man/Kennaugh/PCM0007.png

Terrible race by our standards. Never got a top 20 on a stage. How Brad got 15th overall i will never know. Brailsford was furious when we got back to HQ. This has got to be the most depressed ive been while cycling, i didn't even make the top 100

Milano-San Remo

La Primavera, the first of the years classics, and one designed for the sprinters. I took the day off from training and took a train across the finish in San Reamo.

Edvald was the nominated leader, with Simon Gerrans as a back up. The first 100km was covered at an average speed of 47km/h, as HTC and Garmin tried to control the breakaways. 9 went clear eventually, and things setled down until the Mane. At 50km to go we showed out hand. Chris, Xabier, Ben and Davide moved to aid the chase.
The action really started on the Cipressa. Cancellara, Ballan and Boonen attacked but couldnt get a gap. This blew up all but Juan, Edvald, Simon and Micheal for us. In the stands the tension was growing.
Then it began to rain, and the pace was extreme. Between the Cipressa and the Poggio it never dropped below 50km/h. Then on the Poggio Edvald, with a +5 form, pushed to the front. He got a gap of a few seconds at the top. Then he attacked on the decent. He gained 40" over a chasing group.
Edvald held on, taking a magnificent win in the rain!!
Haussler was 2nd and Gilbert 3rd.

What a great win for Edvald and the team!! Being in the stands at the finish was amazing, and the team celebration was fun, but short.
Im currently prepparing for the Criterium International, which is my next race, and will hopefuully be an improvment on Tirreno
