Press release from the Isle of Man government.
To celebrate the success of manx cycling, the Isle Of Man government have decided to sponsor a cycling team to promote the Island and gain maximum benefit from the success of Mark Cavendish and the future potential of Peter Kennaugh (note: the only two edits I’ve made to the database are to give Cavendish the World Champs jersey and to increase Kennaugh’s potential to 7 so that he becomes a future leader).
The Manx government has invested significantly in the team and are looking for early promotion to the pro-tour, wishing to be competitive at all levels and styles of racing and not just be a sprint team and vehicle for Cavendish. This is a significant and long-term venture designed to promote cycling and fitness on the Island whilst simultaneously promoting tourism and business interest to the Island.
We are delighted that Mark Cavendish has agreed to sign for the team and are grateful to Team Sky for allowing us to approach Peter Kennaugh. As we look to assemble the team, it will be necessary to negotiate with teams for riders. We intend to do so in absolute good faith.
Not only is Manx cycling in the ascendancy, these are good times for British and Irish cycling too and whilst we will not handicap ourselves by restricting ourselves to riders from certain countries, it is fair to say that we will focus on riders from Britain and Ireland. We will shortly be announcing the remaining members of the team once negotiations have been completed.

As a manxman, I thank you. I just hope my PCM skills do justice to it (unfortunately doubtful). |

From Cycling News
Manx Racing called a press conference today to announce which riders will compete for them in the coming season. Sprinter Mark Cavendish and future GT hopeful Peter Kennaugh had previously been announced.
The most noticeable announcement understandably was that of the joint team leader (alongside Mark Cavendish). It had been rumoured that Manx Racing were seeking an additional rider from the British Isles for a significant leadership role in the team and this was confirmed when they announced that Nicholas Roche would be their leader for the Tour De France and the hilly classics should they be able to secure an invite.
Two other key riders turned some heads amongst the ranks of the cycling journalist. Carlos Barredo was signed to share time with Roche in the classics and ride the Vuelta whilst Vasil Kiryienka will ride the Giro and Tour in a joint leadership role with Roche.
Being true to their announced philosophy of focusing on riders from GB and Ireland, Manx Racing revealed that more than a quarter of the team would come from home shores. Joining Roche, Cavendish and Kennaugh are exciting British prospect Luke Rowe, Stephen Cummings who joins from Team Sky and young British sprinter Adam Blythe. The other Irish rider on the team is the climbing domestique Phillip Deignan.
Other noticeable additions were sprinters Manuel Cardoso and Grega Bole, cobble specialists Martin Tjallingi and Staf Scheirlinckx and highly thought of climbing prospects Simon Spilak, Sergio Henao, Wilco Kelderman and Nairo Quintana. Additionally, Australian sprinting prospect Michael Matthews and the Slovenian Marko Kump are two other riders that team management are thought to be excited about.
Finally, rounding out the team are time trial specialist Gustav Larrson, climbing domestiques Tiago Machado, Rui Costa and Vladimir Gusev and flat/cobble riders Matthew Hayman and Lieuwe Westra.
The sponsors also announced their hopes for the season. As a priority, and owing to the presence of Mark Cavendish, points victories in the Vuelta and Tour de France and a win in Milan-San Remo top the sponsors expectations for the season. Top fives in Paris-Nice and Giro Di Lombardia along with a top 10 in the Giro are also high among the sponsors expectations for the coming season.
Malcolm Quayle, the Team Principal was cautiously optimistic about the teams chances this coming season:
We wanted to build a team that would be competitive at all levels and styles of racing. We believe we have achieved this, particularly with Mark, Nicholas and Carlos in the team. Gaining promotion will be difficult but we are confident that there are enough potential points within the team to achieve it.
Editors Note: I tried to build a team that wouldn't obviously win promotion but was good enough to make any race entered interesting from my point of view. I kept on adding the likes of Haussler, Vansummeran, Geraint Thomas and Peter Sagan to the team but in the end decided that they were unrealistic for a Conti team and would make getting promotion easier than I wanted it to be. I'm far from being a good PCM player and playing this save on HARD will make getting promotion even tougher but aside from probably the cobbled races there should be enough points here to make it viable. Does anyone have any thoughts on the team presented above? |

Do you mean Geraint Thomas? He's not in the squad, was just someone I wanted to add but then decided would make the game too unrealistic so left him out.
I was actually pleasently surprised by the goals. Points jersey's in the Tour and Vuelta should be possible for Mark Cavendish and Milan San Remo is supposed to be the sprinters classic so again Cavendish for there. As for the goals as a whole, these are them in full.
*****
TDF - Points Classification
Vuelta - Points Classification
Milan - San Remo - Winner
****
Giro di Italia - Top 10
Giro Di Lombardia - Top 5
Paris - Nice - Top 5
***
Tour De Suisse - Top 5
Volta Ciclista a Catalunya - 1st Mountains Classification
La Fleche Wallone - Top 5
**
Liege - Bastogne - Liege - Top 10
Tirreno - adriatico - Top 10
Dauphine Libere - Top 10
*
Tour De Romandie - Top 10
Amstel Gold - Top 10
Vuelta Ciclista al Pais Vasco - Top 10
Yes they're tough but I'm just pleased that I'm being asked to finish top 5 or top 10 in most of them rather than being required to win them. What I do like is that the computer has noted my lack of real cobble specialists and that the team is based around a sprinter (Mark Cavendish) and two hilly classics riders (Roche and Barredo) and given me goals that match those riders.
The ones that worry me the most are Milan-San Remo (do I have the team to get Cav in place for the sprint?) and the one week stage races (can I organise the schedules to accomodate Roche, Kiryienka or Barredo?).
BTW - I've never raced a season as a Conti team. Does anyone know how difficult it is to get invites to these races or am I assured of them? |

Good luck with your story. I really like your team. You only took 2 sky riders which is very good i think. IF you get some good results early, you should get those wildcards fairly easy.

Thanks. When planning the team I wanted to avoid decimating other teams, particularly my rival continental teams. Also, not signing Sky riders or Daniel Martin as an Irish rider gives me some interesting targets to sign in coming seasons. |

As am I. I wanted him to be my cobble leader as he's good but not a definite winner but I couldn't bring myself to justify it, particularly as we've only got three cobbled races on the calendar as it stands right now. He will certainly be someone I'd be targeting in future years however - one of the best young all-rounders in the game and would have been ideal for Cavendish's train. Oh well.
His stats:
Flat - 77 (sigh!)
Mountain - 71
Hill - 73
TT - 76
Prl - 78
Cobble - 77 (would have been best on team)
Sprint - 73
Acc - 75
Fighter - 69
Stamina - 75
Contracted until 2012. |

Pre-Season
1. I've decided to skip 3d racing the Aussie road and ITT championships and will quick-sim them. They're not races I particularly enjoy and I want to get on with the racing proper.
2. I have requested a wild card for the Tour Down Under. Was in two minds about it due to the expense and additional days raced, but assuming the points awarded in game are the same as the CQranking, points here are double those in a 2.1 race and that's something worth challenging for.
3. Riders without a contract for 2012:
Phillip Deignan - 2000 euro
Vladimir Gusev - 4000 euro
Stephen Cummings - 4,750 euro
Nicholas Roche - 31,500 euro
Rui Costa - 5,500 euro
Nairo Quintana - 5,500 euro
Simon Spilak - 12,000 euro
Gustav Erik Larsson - 9,500 euro
Roche and Spilak are the two I'll need to get resigned as a priority.
4. My january calendar
The Tour Down Under will be added to this. |

Top tens from the quick-simmed Australian championships.
Road race:
1 | Heinrich Haussler | Team Garmin - Cervélo | 3h56'20 | 2 | Allan Davis | Pro Team Astana | s.t. | 3 | Richie Porte | Saxo Bank SunGard | + 18 | 4 | Mitchell Docker | Skil - Shimano | + 39 | 5 | David Tanner | Saxo Bank SunGard | s.t. | 6 | Simon Gerrans | Sky ProCycling | s.t. | 7 | Cadel Evans | BMC Racing Team | s.t. | 8 | Mark Renshaw | HTC - Highroad | + 1'04 | 9 | Matthew Goss | HTC - Highroad | s.t. | 10 | Michael Matthews | MANX TEAM RACING | s.t. |
ITT:
1 | Rory Sutherland | UnitedHealthcare Pro Cycling | 43'50 | 2 | Richie Porte | Saxo Bank SunGard | + 4 | 3 | Cadel Evans | BMC Racing Team | + 26 | 4 | Travis Meyer | Team Garmin - Cervélo | + 58 | 5 | Adam Hansen | Omega Pharma - Lotto | + 1'19 | 6 | Cameron Wurf | Liquigas - Cannondale | + 1'40 | 7 | Brett Lancaster | Team Garmin - Cervélo | + 2'10 | 8 | Cameron Meyer | Team Garmin - Cervélo | + 2'22 | 9 | Michael Rogers | Sky ProCycling | + 2'28 | 10 | Timothy Roe | BMC Racing Team | + 2'54 |
Rory Sutherland was a rider I seriously flirted with as a signing for this team but chose not to because I didn't want to "steal" talent from a rival. Damn....
As for our riders, Matthew Hayman finished 31st overall @6'31'' down and Michael Matthews finished 27th at 5'31'' down.
Tour De San Luis next and then Mark Cavendish will be able to display his new World Championship jersey in the Tour Down Under for which our wildcard invitation was accepted. |
