After the last HC stage race of the season, it's time for the last flat HC classic. From Britain we move overseas to Hamburg in Germany for the Vattenfall Classic.
216km of riding trough Germany. It's rated as flat, but that isn't a guarantee that a sprinter will get the win at the end of the day. With the steep tricky hills near the end, there might be a few puncheurs who fancy their chances and launch an attack. Or why not a rouleur on the last flat part?
The contender field here is immense. It looks more like a PT race when it comes to sprinters. Vantomme, Van Heerden, Goss, Swift, Rowe, Mohs, ...
Vespa however, decide to bring out their classic team again, with Steegmans as their leader. If he wants to win, he should attack rather then relying on his sprint. The best team's for a lead-out are 100% ME and Pokerstars. 100% ME got Kennaugh and Cavendish to lead-out Swift. Pokerstars got Kluge and Dumoulin. But that is, if it comes down to a sprint!
A possible top 5 is hard to predict, but this might be something:
1. | Juan Van Heerden | 2. | Gerald Ciolek | 3. | Ben Swift | 4. | Maxim Vantomme | 5. | Luke Rowe |
Van Heerden has had some very good results so far in sprint classics. Ciolek is riding on home ground. Swift has the best lead-out train and Vantomme and Rowe are two top sprinters. Steegmans and Goss just suck lately and Mohs might get tired from the hills (although he didn't last year ).

My last season goal - top 5.. I have Thor Huhovd, Jimmy Casper, Juan Forero and Michael Vanderaerden here, so I have to hope for a top 5 result, but it will be a big lottery, my tip for the winner is Matt Goss.

Weak field, Loddo should win easy.
Or perhaps not, but I can always dream..

Pity the race is not a bit longer - Steegmans would have a better chance then. The team should be fairly fresh as well in the run in as not being a favourite should mean no chasing. No doubt the AI will use Cassidy to give him a lead out at that point. |

looking forward to this one a lot...but with such strong field here, I can see many riders with highest ambitions...would be great, if Mohs could repeat his win from last year though

Vaitkus is a bit weak in this field, but still got my hopes for a good results, or maybe I will take the shock breakaway again? Been lucky with those in the flat classics

Ventoso, you are by definition useless.
Seriously, WTF, you just have to be on Del Nero's wheel and you clean up. 56th is a joke.
That said, 5th is still a decent result for me

Ciolek - excellent German sprinter who should be able to survive those climbs - like WHA???
Goss takes the win and surely that will take Bacardi into the Protour - Van Heerden also very consistent really. Milka likewise look like they could be candidates for a top five spot.
HC company has blown Red Bull's squad away again - showing that I really do need to sign riders of more quality next season.. and perhaps eye up some good transfer deals!

Steegmans and Pagoto both get caught again, Vespa's plan has failed. Delage is still alone in front.
That gave me a good laugh. Vespa with a plan.
Were they caught or did they stop riding? |

It was a strange race, but in the end, you won't hear me complaining . I was begging for Goss to position himself well. Then the sprint came, and Goss (with Rowe, Vantomme and Vanheerden) was nowhere. This really should have been an easy win for 100% ME, but the sprint bug counted them out. Then Vanheerden pulled Goss, Rowe and Vantomme to the front and it really was a very close call.
Also, i have absolutely no clue what happened to Ciolek. He just quit ... Strange, considering he had a really good shot to make the podium or even win imo.
@ fenian: I checked the replay, and they were riding, even relaying each other. The gap was closed by Santander on one of the little hills.
@ mb: While i was rewatching a little part of the replay for fenian, i noticed that Ventoso was also chasing Steegmans ... Not for long, but might have something to do with it. But still, you should be happy with 5th (like you said). A lot of teams really came bad out of this race.
@ Smowz: I hope so, but Goss is so strange. He has won 2 sprint classics this season, and failed completely in all the others. He still has Franco Belge and Piemonte/Paris Tours left. Hope he can atleast do some good sprinting in Franco Belge.

I suspect he tried to follow Guerao or Galdos, as they both ended up near him and they could have been killed by the hills.
Top 5 is a very solid result, 30 points per race day is fairly good, it's just disappointing that all my real sprinters failed again

Citing this as another example as why I refuse to continue the ManGame in PCM09 next season.
Id be annoyed, but I expected a fail such as this
