Lampre - Farnese Vini Season 2010
The 2009 season was a dissapointing one for Lampre and they will be looking to turn it around in 2010. It seems Alessandro Ballan was struck by the curse of the rainbow jersey in 2009 as he struggled to find any form and at the end of the season he left for the expanding BMC Racing Team. He wasn't the only big name to leave Lampre, others including Marzio Bruseghin, Enrico Gasparotto, Mauro Santambrogio and Paolo Tiralongo all leaving for various teams.
But a number of signings were made to replace theses departing riders, the biggest name being Italian sprint hero Alessandro Petacchi, who along with three others joined Lampre from the disbanding LPR Brakes outfit. To support Petacchi in the sprints Danilo Hondo and Grega Bole were signed. Italian veteran Gilberto Simoni returned to his former team for one final season before retiring. A finally few promising young riders were signed to complete the Lampre - Farnese Vini roster for 2010.
Looking forward to the 2010 season, it seems most of the responsibility to bring in results falls on the shoulders of Alessandro Pettachi and Damiano Cunego. Cunego is yet to really deliver on the promise he showed early in his career when he won the 2004 Giro and won the White Jersey in the 2006 TDF. But other riders such as Lorenzetto, Spilak, Bole and Hondo shouldn't be forgotten.
The Team
Leaders
Cunego will peak for the Giro, wherehopefully he can finish high up in the GC. He will then skip the tour and use July to recover before peaking again for the late season classics, particually the Giro di Lombardia. Preparation for this race might include racing the Vuelta.
Petacchi's main goal of the season will be the Tour, he'll look for sprint wins there and who knows that might even result in a Green Jersey.
Lorenzetto will be looking for victories and the Points Jersey at the Giro.
Protected Riders
The promising young Slovenian is one to look out for in the future. He'll be going to the Tour this year hoping to learn from the experience. Targeting the GC might be a bit beyond him but who knows.
Like Spilak, Bole is another promising young Slovenian. Whilst his main role will often be to help 'Alejet' in the sprints, he's very capable sprinter himself and he'll get his chances through the season to show that.
Hondo was recruited to strengthen our sprint train. The German will ride Giro in support of Lorenzetto.
The veteran Italian will be calling it quits after the Giro, he'll be prominent early in the season.
Pietropolli followed Petacchi to Lampre from LPR Brakes. He's a bit of an all-rounder being a capable climber and a decent sprinter. He could rack up wint at Continental level but might struggle to have such an impact at Pro Tour level. But don't write him off.
Furlan has a great turn of speed, but struggles to get over even small climbs and might find himself getting dropped when there is a short climb before the sprint finish.
* Screenshots taken after TDU so that explains why some riders are much fitter than others.

Hmm seems I didn't have anywhere near the amount of time that i'd expected too. Preparing for end of year exams has got me really busy, not to mention us selling our house. But anyway TDU report will be coming soon, hopefully ... |

Tour Down Under Part 1
This may be the official start of the Pro Tour season, but for us it's nothing more than a training camp. We really will just be trying to build up fitness levels.
As we come with a pretty unfit squad we don't expect much, a top 10 overall would be nice I guess but it looks tough.
Team:Mirco Lorenzetto
Daniele Pietropolli
Adriano Malori
Andrea Grendene
Vitaliy Buts
Matteo Bono
Mauro Da Dalto
Stage 1
It came down to a sprint finish, Mirco Lorenzetto was unable to keep up with the other sprinters at this early point in the seaon and could only manage 14th on the stage.
Bobbie Traskel looked to have caught everyone else out when he oppened the sprint very early and created a gap, but Mark Cavendish came storming home to take the the victory right on the line.
Mark Cavendish catches Bobbie Traskel on the line to win the opening stage of the Tour Down Under.
* For some reson exports haven't worked for most of the TDU, so i'll just have to make do with screenshots.
Stage Standings
Stage 2
A large group got away early in the stage and built up a decent lead. We put Malori in the group.
With under 40km to go the wind wrecked havoc, spliting the peleton, the front of the peleton, being driven by HTC was now down to about 20 riders. At this stage Malori could no longer hold onto the breakaway and dropped back to this group, giving us three riders there including Lorenzetto.
With 15km to go the break was almost caught by the chasing group of around 20 that had formed in the split.
The breakaway nearly caught.
At this point HTC suddenly decided to turn off the gas, By the time other teams realised the pace had dropped, the lead group had already pulled away again to a 50 second lead.
The break pulled right away and fought for the win between themselves. Martin Elmiger took victory.
Great victory for the Swiss rider on a very strage day of racing.
Stage Standings
The peleton came home 1'23" behind the front group of 12 riders.
Elmiger takes the overall lead, can he hold on and take overall victory?
Overall
1) M. Elmiger
2) T. Dall' Antonia
3) M. Selvaggi
EDIT: Seems Imade a little bit of a mistake, Elmiger actually held the overall lead.

Tour Down Under Part 2
Stage 3
When the road kicked slightly uphill towards the finish of the stage, Vitaliy Buts saw an opportunity to attack and chase the stage win.
Despite never really gaining a significant lead he was still out in front as he passed under the 1km to go flag.
Buts out in front, can he hold on?
He threw every last bit off effort in, but it was not enough as he was caught be the peleton on the line. Anthony Gelsin took the victory.
Anthony Gelsin takes the victory for FDJ.

3. V.Buts
Overall Standings
1. M. Elmiger
2. T. Dall' Antonia
3. M. Selvaggi
Stage 4
Mikel Lorezetto showed he is gaining form today, with a 4th place finish on the stage.
Mark Cavendish took his second victory of the race, but like his first win, only by the barest of margains. In stage 1 Bobbie Traskel was second to the Manx Missile, this time it was his teammate Romain Feillu finishing second.
Cav edging out Feillu on the line.

Overall Standings

Stage 5
The race would be decided on stage 5 as the peleton climed Willunga Hill twice. Would an attacker break away and build up a big enough lead to take overall victory, or could Liqugas keep it all together?
As the peleton approached Willunga Hill for the second time, it looking likely the break would survive.
Race leader Martin Elmiger struggled and eventually dropped off the back of the peleton. This put Tiziano Dall' Antonia into the virtual lead on the road.
Down Willunga Hill for the second and final time, Pablo Lastras and Alexandre Moos were at the head of the race.
Over the closing stages Lastras pulled away from his counterpart to take the victory.
Pablo Lastras holds off the peleton to claim victory.
Moos trailed him home a few seconds later and the peleton not long after that, meaning that barring an unfortunate mishap on the final stage, Tiziano Dall' Antonia would win the Tour Down Under. As a result of Elmiger's faliure today, Mirko Selvaggi stepped up to second on the podium with Manuel Quinziato rounding out the top three.
Stage Standings

2. A. Moos + 16"
3. Romain Sicard (peleotn) + 41"
Overall Standings
1. T. Dall' Antonia
2. M. Selvaggi
3. M . Quinziato
Stage 6
After a hectic stage of racing Mark Cavendish racked up his third win of the race, beating Tom Boonen in the sprint to the line. Imposing form from Cavendish ahead of Milan - San Remo and later in the season the Tour de France.
Cavendish completes his domination of the Tour Down Under.
Stage Standings
1. M. Cavendish
2. T. Boonen

Three Italians finish on the final podium courtesy of the successful stage 2 breakway. Unfortunately one of the Italians were ours. Mirko Lorenzetto was our highest finisher in 26th position, 1'31" down.

Giro della Calabria
Vitaliy Buts has won the 2010 Giro della Calabria, thanks to a great solo victory on the first stage.
After a the peleton was whittled down to a select group over the mountainous terrain on stage 1, Buts broke free to take victory. Vacansoleil completed an excellent 1-2 on stage 2, with Alberto Ongarato taking victory and Bobbie Traskel coming second. Thomas De Gent of Topsport Vlaanderen - Mercator claimed vitcory on a hilly stage 3, Vitaliy Buts did a great job to limit his losses and retain the overall lead. In the 4th and final stage, Alberto Ongarato took his second sprint victory of the race. Grega Bole picked up some valuable time bounuses to move up to 6th overall.
Vitaliy Buts takes Lampre's first victory of the season.

OK i've decided just to report on PT races (maybe a few CT races), with a monthly recap at the end of each month.
February review
We kicked off February with a nice 3rd and 4th place at G,P. Costa degli Etruschi thanks to Pietropolli and Hondo. The Vancansoleil duo of Ongarato and Traskel.
Simon Spilak opened his season in fine style at Tour Mediterraneen with second place overall behind World Champion Cadel Evans.
The Giro della Provincia di Grosseto was won by Thomas Voeckler, Grega Bole was our best rider finishing 10th overall and picking up a stage victory.
Damiano Cunego took victory in his race of the season, Trofeo Laigueglia Despite being fairly unfit, he powered away at the finish to take a solo victory.
Gilberto Simoni finished 4th overall at the Giro di Sardegna, Massimiliano took victory.

2010 Paris - Nice
Route
Stage 1 ITT
Stage 2
Stage 3
Stage 4
Stage 5
Stage 6
Stage 7
Stage 8
Not an overly difficult route, with no real big climbs to mention. Stages 5 and 7 shape as being the most decisive. It will be crucial to position youself in the first 20 or so riders on the approch to the climb to Mende on stage 5. There is only one stage that suits pure sprinters, stage 2. Stage 3 should end a mass sprint finish as well, but the undulating terrain in the approach to the line could trouble the pure sprinters.

The fact that this race is so early in the season makes it hard to predict GC contenders as riders' fitness levels are all different. Maybe we should be looking out for the french riders, as they're likely to be targeting this race. The classiest GC contenders here look to be S. Sanchez, I. Anton, R. Gesink, C. Evans, F. Schleck, Lance Armstrong and Romain Kreuziger, J. Rodriguez. Any of those eight men are look capable of victory. And don't forget about S. Spilak, who could be the suprise packet of the race. P. Gilbert is one to watch in the early stages of the race. Some good sprinters will be lining up at the start of this race, M. Cavendish, T. Farrar, G. Ciolek and A. Davis will be hoping for victory on stage 2.

Stage 1 ITT
A short TT to get us underway. Tony Martin looks the clear favouite, but I guess the question is, how is his fitness?
Promising young American Tejay Van Garderen set the fastest early time, and held it for quite some time.
Simon Spilak looked to start his campaign off well. He rode well, but only managed 43nd place + 33.
Van Garderen held the lead until Tony Martin got underway, the German proved just too good today and took the victory.
Cadel Evans came home well late for 2nd.

Stage 2
Looks just like a stage for Cav.
The break is caught, the sprint opens with Cavendish caught a fair way behind. We didn't real bring a decent sprinter so weren't involved in the action.
Cavendish still can't get to the front as Duque takes the lead. Can he hold on to take a suprise victory?
Yes he can, Leonardo Duque takes the victory for Cofidis ahead of Alan Davis and a fast finishing Mark Cavenedish.
*game crashed again... so no exports, i've actually reinstalled the game since then so hopefully the crashes stop.

Stage 3
Will a sprinter be able to survive the hills near the end totake victory, or will a puncheur steal the show?
Loosli on the attack, trying to join the break of the day. Eventually he realises he can't make it and sits up to wait for the pack.
Many pure sprinters fell off the pace on the last climb. With no real real organised sprint train it was an all-in dash to the line. Pietropolli was out best placed rider.
Boasson Hagen took the lead in the final km, yesterday's winner Duque sat just outside his wheel poised to come around him.
And that's exactly what he did, Duque make it two in a row. Pietropolli rode well to take a nice 6th place for us.

Paris - Nice
Stage 4
Classified as a hilly stage, a selct group might fight it out at the line.
Marzano went on the attack, but couldn't quie reach the front group. He was pulled back in well before the line.
HTC - Columbia were working hard for their leader Tony Martin. Once the breakaway was reeled in attacks were being made left right and centre.
A small group formed at the front, consisting of Kim Kirchen (KAT), the in-form Leonardo Duque (COF) and Luis Leon Sanchez (GCE). A short time later, Phillipe Gilbert (OLO) joined the group.
A few other chasing groups formed down the road, we put Pietropolli in one of them. They were all brought back by the peleton.
Gilbert attacks of the top of a short climb, 2km before the finish. Would this be the decisive move?
Luis Leon Sanchez had other ideas, he did his best to pull back the Belgian. Trailing in his wheel was Leonardo Duque, surely he couldn't possibly win his third stage in a row?
No he couldn't, Gilbert accelerated at the finish and that was enough to hold on for victory. Duque took second, while Sanchez took third and with it the Yellow Jersey. Pietropolli and Spilak finished 10th and 13th respectively, over a minute down on the winner but ahead of the peleton which contained most of the favourites. Not the greatest start, but it could have been worse.

2010 Tirreno - Adriatico
Route:
Stage 1
Stage 2
Stage 3
Stage 4
Stage 5 ITT
Stage 6
Stage 7
It looks like the stage 5 Time Trial will have a big impact on the outcome of this race. The early stages, despite seeming flat, are quity hilly towards the finsh and should make things interesting. Stage 7 is the only really flat stage.

As is often the case with these early season races, fitness will play a major part in the final result. Many riders here are riding with an eye to the spring classics and you can be certain they will be in shape. Fabian Cancellara looks almost certain to be in the leaders jersey after stage 5. But whether he can build up a big enough time gap in the TT to hold onto the lead in stage 6 remains to be seen. Other GC contenders in attendance are A. Schleck. A. Vinokourov, I. Basso, V. Nibali, S, Garzelli, M. Scarponi, D. Arroyo, B. Wiggins, A. Kloden and J. Brajkovic. We're yet to decide our leader for the race. Bole and Lorenzetto are in great form and will be protected in the sprints, Gilberto Simoni looks the likely candidate to lead us in the GC but Bole and might have something to say about that.
Now onto the race... |
