Smowz' Continental Tour Preview

Continental Tour Preview
While 19 teams battle it out in the regimented and structured Protour, 29 other teams will battle it out for promotion from the Continental Tour. With only 2 confirmed promotion spots competition for rider contracts have been fierce and no doubt the racing will match this. The 29 teams are made up of 12 new teams, 8 stalwarts and 9 teams adapted from previous teams.

The establishment
We start with those teams that have had the fortune of having a patient and long term sponsor. These teams would be favourites for promotion in the next season; however 3 of its ranks are ineligible due to a conflict of interest. Nevertheless 6 of these squads finished in the top 12 of the continental Tour last year and given the amount of squads that ended up being promoted makes them among favourites to challenge the top 5 this year.

All change

Sponsers can be impatient for success, fortunately some team managers are enterprising enough to find new companies fortunate/foolish enough to join their cycling adventure. These teams number 10 in the Continental tour ranks this season and had varying campaigns last season. Last year seasons ranged from steady learning experiences to outright disaster (including a squad relegated from the Protour last season). Due to the change in sponsor these squads have had to refresh their outlook somewhat and all hope for improvements in the coming year

The freshman

Swelling the Continental Tour ranks we have 12 new squads entering the fray. These squads have had the challenge of building entirely new squads from scratch in which we saw a variety of strategies. It does appear at first glance that all the new squads will have trouble breaking into the top 10 and promotion talk is certainly premature. However with the likes of Ricardo Ricco and Jose Serpa in their ranks the new teams will certainly pack a punch.

100% ME cannot promote, which is what you seem to be implying by the "We say", although granted you do mention that later on.

Can Wiggle and Vespa actually promote?
Manager of:
Bacardi Limited

Yes, as they are Fenian and rjc's first teams. I would guess that Auber 93 or Cafe de Colombia would fold or go to new management were either to promote.

Deadpool: I am not sure what SN and rjc's policy will be on promotion - I do know this on close analysis of the teams they do have very strong teams capable of reaching promotion positions. Last year Starbucks finished below Vespa Caffreys and yet have been promoted, so I am not sure as to whether Vespa Caffreys have promotion on their mind!

What I meant by my comment was pointing at SN's outrageously talented sprint trio was one to rival real life HTC Columbia. Of course Cya-logic seems to randomize the sprints to some degree but it is an amazing team for one that almost entirelly is made out of British riders.

Deadpool
Well then, I'm not sure about Fenian, but I am 100% sure 100% ME will not promote, and 100% sure Wiggle will.

SportingNonsense
Great previews so far Smowz. And what you dont know is that Ive been training Froome up aswell, to boost my hills team.

--

If Wiggle, Mercedes-Benz or Vespa end in a promotion position then:
If their respective PT team, Auber, Lafarge or Cafe de Colombia, relegate then the manager can continue with 2 teams
If their respective PT team does not relegate, there is a choice:
- Keep both teams, CT team does not promote (Like my situation with 100% Me)
- CT team promotes, lose control of PT team

great npreviews, although i will complain if mine is not up next Wink

fenian_1234
Good stuff so far. Wink

Vespa's main goal is the Giro di Lombardia this year - not the Giro d'Italia. We'd like to ride it and have applied, but don't really have the team to do much the way the stages are. Oh, and I expect Ginanni to do better than he did last year. Wink

Goal is Top 10 and I'd be happy with that. Having gone thru' the C1 race selections I'm thinking it should easily be possible without a recognized stage racer.

Smowz
Part Two is up - and thanks for all the positive feedback. I am aware another did write the previews last year but I was chomping at the bit to do this. Not sure I will attempt to predict the team or individual standings that would be very difficult.

Part three will feature the 12 new teams - I will probably save the most scathing criticisms for my own team though Unicredit and Yamaha Greenpeace are probably are not going to get off scot free Smile Though I doubt I will have that finished until Monday possibly Sunday evening!

wackojackohighcliffe
They say: Wahooo we got Gilbert.
We say: ... and you'll have a season just like the last.

i'm saying wahoo we got faiers and aiming for a top 10 this season Wink my biggest problem with gilbert last season was my race selection which hopefully won't be as bad this year. top 10 seems achievable.

really good previews though and probably a lot fairer than my viewsPfft
