From 2011 onwards, there will be a change to the way in which riders can gain XP, moving on from the 2 xp per race day for any kind of race. The new system now differentiates between different race types - making continental races perfect for level 1 riders, but useless for level 4 riders. This move is expected to lengthen the time it takes for a rider to max out, but could also increase the importance of loan deals.
Here is the New system:
Gaining in Level 1
Grand Tours/Monuments = 0 xp per race day
ProTour = 0 xp per race day
Continental = 3 xp per race day
Gaining in Level 2
Grand Tours/Monuments = 0 xp per race day
ProTour = 1 xp per race day
Continental = 2 xp per race day
Gaining in Level 3
Grand Tours/Monuments = 1 xp per race day
ProTour = 2 xp per race day
Continental = 1 xp per race day
Gaining in Level 4
Grand Tours/Monuments = 2 xp per race day
ProTour = 1 xp per race day
Continental = 0 xp per race day
Exemption from this system are the non-rankings events, Tour de l'Avenir will give a total of 20 xp from it's 10 race days, while the Criterium Series has its own system as mentioned in its thread.
--
We have also looked to improve the sprinting aspect of the game, to fix issues that allowed Andy Schleck to win a bunch sprint in this year's Vuelta. And so all sprinters have therefore received a free boost to their recovery stat.
Those with 76 sprint or above receive an extra 7 to their recovery stat, while those with 75 sprint receive an extra 4. In future, when a rider reaches these sprint stats - through xp or training, he will receive the same recovery increase - unless the rider has a high mountain stat.

XP is gained based on the type of race he rides, so obviously if he rides PT races, he gets the XP that is shown for PT races for his XP level

Does the way a rider gain XP change mid season?
i.e. if rider A is lever 3 with 80XP ad he only races 40 CT days will he gain 40 XP or will he gain 20XP and then nothing as he is now level 4?

20 xp to get to level 4, and then nothing - since now at level 4, you get no XP in continental races. You could get XP from wildcards though.

Yes
So if youre on level 3, 50 xp, and have say 70 continental race days and 15 protour - the continental xp will be added to get to level 4, and then the protour xp will be added.

So, essentially it's the maximum possible gain for our riders.

A good way to put it yes - although the gains will overall remain slower than previous seasons

Seeing as many managers don't know how stats work, I thought I'd be helpful and explain (as best I can) my understanding of how it works around here. I know it would have been a great help to me last transfer season to know how it worked, as I'd probably have kept a great deal more of my original squad, etc.
Riders, like in PCM06 and 07 have the stat levels, 1 to 4, and 100 points to each level. From start to finish, a rider goes from 1.00 to 4.100.
As explained in the first post of this thread, experience gained varies for each rider, depending on the race and the level of experience they are already at.
Once a rider gains 100xp points, (supposing they have none to start with) they will go from one level to the next (1.99 to 2.00). This means that they gain a few stats here and there.
These stat gains are applied at the end of each season, and can be worked out by looking at this spreadsheet:
https://hotfile.com/dl/31035499/cad219...s.xls.html
You will, at the end of the season, be PMed with the names of your riders who have gone up any levels, and asked in what area you want to train them in. The stat gains will be then applied, and the DB will be released at the end of the season, pre-renewals, so you can see what your riders will look like for the next season.
The amount of stats gained depends upon the experience they are moving to and the potential of the rider.
A high potential rider (6-7) will gain more than a potential 1-4 rider in each stat gain they go through.
Likewise, a stat gain from level 3 to 4 will earn more points than a move from 1 to 2.
The areas you can decide to train the rider in are:
Fighter, Hills, Stage Racing, Sprinter, Time Trial, Cobbles and Climber.
This increase in experience levels should not be confused with training that has appeared this year.
I hope that helps.
Any questions, ask away.

Further to rjc's explanation when a rider reaches 4,100 he gains the same as when he went from level 2 to level 3

Just a question I didn't see answered when I made a quick read-trough. In the calender file the 1 day race stand as 2 race days, would this means that a level 1 rider would get 6 xp from riding the race? Or 3 xp?

Good question - 3.
(As far as I know...)
EDIT: But now I'm started to second guess myself... best to wait for SN to clarify!

I would assume 6, as it was 4 last year for classics, although SN will confirm.

Hopefully from the worlds, treating it as a monument. Not sure about nationals
