EPIC - Season 1 Part 3

Verboven 4th and 11th, quite unlucky for him.

No idea what Belkin is doing. In Brussels they fail to do anything, despite having Bos and Brouwer in perfect position. And was Brouwer sprinting backwards in Quebec?

Well, there goes our perfect record of scoring points each race Sad

I have no clue what Brouwer was doing, Naudhaug had a great race though, he marked a lot of favourite moves (sorry I missed them in reporting, but I can't do everything, I try) and he sprinted better than Brouwer. Wink

Think we need a proper puncher in the transfer period, Geschke had a strong ride but I'd like to have more impact in the one day classics, can't think of any active non signed EPIC riders to fit the bill

Schröder only 18. Could have been better although it is nice to see that he can keep up with the favourites again.

3 point-scorers in Brussels is really important for us! Grin

Kudos to Rudy for trying an attack. He either needs to get that bit stronger so that he will suceed when he attacks or start saving some energy for the final sprint Wink

With no categorized climbs this is supposed to be a flat stage. Some sprinters could end up using a lot of energy on the first half of the stage though!

i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/EPIC/Ep-USA-5-2_zps0bef1769.jpg
6 riders form todays break from early on. Malacarne (BSE) was the first attacker and was followed by Amorison (CRE), Downing (TNE), Popovych (RLT), Corti (COL) and Peron (TNN).
They have a gap of 4’17 going into the final 100 km.

90 km and 4’53
i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/EPIC/Ep-USA-5-3_zps266382f9.jpg
80 km and 4’32
Topsport Vlaanderen is doing most of the work in the peloton and the gap starts going down fast.

70 km and 3’39
60 km and 3’05
50 km and 2’42
40 km and 2’13
i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/EPIC/Ep-USA-5-4_zps88b49c90.jpg
Popovych is in the provisional GC lead and sprints to 6 bonus seconds on the intermediate.
With 35 km to go and less than 2 minutes it looks more and more like the expected bunch sprint though.

30 km and 1’35
20 km and 1’08
i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/EPIC/Ep-USA-5-5_zpsc8ec5d32.jpg
It’s still Topsport, BMC and Saxo-Tinkoff pulling behind. The latter should be working for McDermott who are leaving for Garmin after this season after having criticized his level of support.

15 km and 52 seconds
10 km and the gap is growing again!
Now up to 1’08. Looks like yet another day where the peloton fails when it counts…
i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/EPIC/Ep-USA-5-6_zps328e4182.jpg
The break is working nicely together which is more than can be said about the peloton at this time.
i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/EPIC/Ep-USA-5-7_zps1b453b68.jpg
Downing attacks into the final 5 km whole Paulinho (TST) has put some speed back in the peloton.

No one can follow the Brit and he goes into the final 3 km with about 20 seconds to the rest of the breakers and almost a minute to the peloton where Saxo and Argos are driving their trains.
i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/EPIC/Ep-USA-5-8_zps197107bc.jpg
Amorison is putting in a massive sprint from the break.
i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/EPIC/Ep-USA-5-9_zpsab32219f.jpg
Meanwhile in the peloton only Topsport manage to put in a decent leadout as Argos and Saxo-Tinkoff ruin it for both themselves and each other.
An embarrassing show by the two big teams looking more like juniors than professionals!
i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/EPIC/Ep-USA-5-10_zps49b0d0e5.jpg
Downing gives everything he has and is too tired to even celebrate when he crosses the line.
i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/EPIC/Ep-USA-5-11_zps1237e242.jpg
The peloton catshes the rest of the breakers on the line and it’s a messy sprint where the expected top sprinters are all absent due to the “leadout” chaos destroying all trains.

I'm pleased we're leading of course. But that's irrelevant to the quality of the race. The race badly needs a summit finish. Friedemann is almost in the top 10 .

And why would BMC work on a flat stage with no threat to the GC and no sprinter? I didn't come here for stage wins.

Well you haven't been working when your GC has been threatened either. If you get the final win you owe a lot to Garmin as they have done far more than BMC in terms of limiting time loss...

True. I couldn't send that strong a team here because we needed riders elsewhere. I also didn't think I would need a team because of the dreadful PCM AI where one rider attacks with 40km to go and all of the team leaders follow but of course this is the one race this year where nobody attacks. Pfft

But look at Radioshack's team Shock. They have a ridiculously strong team and they don't seem to be doing anything.

The Chrono des nation route I have is only 48km, while the 2013 route is 57km but I believe both are flat so doesn't anyone have any objections to using the one I have?

- Top 10 by Kakhi in Brussels is not bad, but it unfortunately means, another goal failed. Sad

- Woohoo! That 4th place by Kakhi is pretty incredible, that really justifies our appearence with him in WT classics! Smile Now I'm even more sad, I didn't pick this as our goal because of Brussels. It would have been a WT goal accomplished...

- Friedemann 14, Schnaidt 23 is just sad in UPCC though.

If any of the big names would like to do some actual racing today is the day!
Rabbit Ears Pass gives the terrain for making it hard right from the start, but are too far from the finish line to be decisive in its own.

i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/EPIC/Ep-USA-6-2_zps63612238.jpg
Andy Schleck (RLT) is there at the front of the peloton right from the start to see Beyer (CSS) make the first attack.
Hopefully this means that the RadioShack-rider is determined to do something today so we can finally get to see some actual racing in GC-battle.
i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/EPIC/Ep-USA-6-3_zps274a45ba.jpg
Once again we get a 6-rider break and once again Malacarne (BSE) is in there. Today accompagnied by De Vreese (TSV), Beyer (CSS), Valencia (COL), Ospina (MOV) and Eijssen (BMC).
i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/EPIC/Ep-USA-6-4_zpsebe8c7e5.jpg
Beyer defends his team mates mountain jersey by crossing the rabbits ears as the first rider.

At this point the gap is up to 3’48 which makes the break the provisional top 6 of the GC with Beyer in the lead.
i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/EPIC/Ep-USA-6-5_zps785d7dec.jpg
Having Powers set the pace on the climb doesn’t look like the right strategy from BMC right now…

After having been up to more than 6 minutes the gap starts shrinking with 120 km left.
i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/EPIC/Ep-USA-6-6_zps41b6bef2.jpg
Surprisingly the intermediate is heavily contested. Malacarne takes it ahead of Valencia and De Vreese.

90 km left and 4’21 to the peloton.
80 km and 3’48
70 km and 3’10
60 km and 2’42
i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/EPIC/Ep-USA-6-7_zpse9402ec4.jpg
As sees so often before BMC have left it to Garmin to do all the work once a proper gap was established to the break.

50 km and 2’18
40 km and 1’40
i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/EPIC/Ep-USA-6-8_zpsdd8fe13e.jpg
With 37 km to go Paulinho (TST), Deignan (UHC) and Burton (ARG) decides to make a move.
i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/EPIC/Ep-USA-6-9_zps01715af3.jpg
Garmin keeps their cool as usual and at the 30 km mark the trio is reeled back in while the original break has a gap of 1’20.
i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/EPIC/Ep-USA-6-10_zps84044f9f.jpg
Heading into the final 20 km the gap goes under a minute and the breakers attack on turns while David Millar is keeping up the pressure behind.
i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/EPIC/Ep-USA-6-11_zps4e580703.jpg
Deignan gives it another go and this time he gets away alone and quickly bridges the gap to the break only to see that Beyer have left them and is alone in front.
i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/EPIC/Ep-USA-6-12_zps3b7e802c.jpg
That groups is reeled back in and immediately we see Garmin following up with an attack on the GC.

No! It’s not Talansky but Howes!!
A very surpsiding tactical choice...
i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/EPIC/Ep-USA-6-13_zps2c2cd7e6.jpg
Beyer gets the next mountain sprint as Howes catches up to him and we finally get to see BMC working within the final 15 km of a stage.
i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/EPIC/Ep-USA-6-14_zps9957d8bb.jpg
At the 10 km mark we even see the peloton reunited.
i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/EPIC/Ep-USA-6-15_zps064a2a9c.jpg
Atapuma opens the finale with 7,5 km to go and is followed by a bunch of riders of no GC significance.
Names like Oget and McDermott will ring a bell for the classics-fans though.
i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/EPIC/Ep-USA-6-16_zps093a0db0.jpg
No one feels like challenging for the GC today and Oget gets away relatively easy.
i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/EPIC/Ep-USA-6-17_zps3e189e8c.jpg
Another messy sprint going into the final 2 km with Oget far ahead and Atapuma inbetween.
i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/EPIC/Ep-USA-6-18_zps426641b4.jpg
Oget takes the stage win thanks to being the only one really daring to go for it today.
i1316.photobucket.com/albums/t605/Atlantius_PCM/EPIC/Ep-USA-6-19_zpsb546e98f.jpg
Schroder gets 2nd while a lot of guys should be ashamed about not moving before the sprint.

Such a close GC with so little action...
