i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/cunego59/Flags/es.gif Vuelta a Espana, Stage 4

i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/cunego59/GT%20-%20Vuelta/p4.jpg

Another totally flat stage. The difficulty consists in the length of the stage, 233 kilometers. Considering the result of the last stages, a breakaway win can't be excluded.

Dominik's Pre-Race Comment

i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/cunego59/GT%20-%20Vuelta/4F.jpg

I don't think we'll send a rider in the break today. It'll be an enormous effort over such a long stage and I don't think that another break will succeed today.

Live Ticker

i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/cunego59/GT%20-%20Vuelta/41.jpg
Km 2:
Dutch champion Karsten Kroon is the first to launch an attack today.
.
i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/cunego59/GT%20-%20Vuelta/42.jpg
Km 11:
Very quickly, four riders created a gap of 3 minutes. Pichot, Pineau and Rast accompany Kroon.
.
Km 43:
The group works together very well. They're already 10 minutes in front.
.
i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/cunego59/GT%20-%20Vuelta/43.jpg
Km 63:
Oh no! Sylvester Szmyd hits the ground! Let's hope he's not injured.
.
Km 66:
Everything seems to be fine. The Pole reaches the peloton quickly.
.
i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/cunego59/GT%20-%20Vuelta/44.jpg
Km 97:
Marco Marcato started the chase. The gap slowly decreases.
.
Km 120:
Movistar and T-Mobile overtook the responsability. They want to secure a mass sprint. Marco Marcato and Peter Sagan join the relay.
.
i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/cunego59/GT%20-%20Vuelta/45.jpg
Km 207:
With 26 kms to go, the break is only 1'30 in front. Sep Vanmarcke and future Liquigas rider Markus Burghardt decide to try an attack.
.
i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/cunego59/GT%20-%20Vuelta/46.jpg
Km 216:
A nasty crash happens. We'll see later which riders are affected.
.
Km 121:
Kevin Van Impe (Quick·Step) tries an attack as well but it doesn't look like it would succeed.
.
Km 123:
Under the high pace of the peloton, Marco Marcato falls back. After the work he has done today, he'll lose his fourth place overall.
.
Km 127:
6 kms from the line, everything is back together. We'll see the first veritable mass sprint of the Vuelta.
.
i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/cunego59/GT%20-%20Vuelta/47.jpg
Km 130:
Cavendish is provided with a perfect lead out. Rojas, Steegmans, Bos and Finetto follow while Sulzberger and World Champion Allan Davis try to bring Goss to the front.
.
i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/cunego59/GT%20-%20Vuelta/48.jpg
Km 131:
Cav comes to the front with 2 kms. That should be way too early. Rojas and Goss are in the best positions now.
.
i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/cunego59/GT%20-%20Vuelta/49.jpg
Km 132:
Under the flamme rouge, Finetto can barely hang on to the front. Cav is still in front, Rojas is waiting to make his move. Goss is trying to overtake his lead out Davis.
.
i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/cunego59/GT%20-%20Vuelta/410.jpg
Km 133:
Rojas eventually had no problems and takes an easy win. Steegmans and Bos achieve great podium places. Finetto faded in the end but could secure a Top 10.
.
Km 133:
Riccardo Riccó lost a whole eight minutes and thus all his overall possibilities due to the crash. Also, the young riders classification is almost decided already in favour of one team: Since Sicard lost another six minutes as well as Talansky, only Peter Sagan, Dominik Nerz and Damiano Caruso haven't lost any time yet. Rafael Valls is three and a half minutes back, all other serious contenders at least 8 minutes.

Dominik's Comment

We are a bit disappointed. We wouldn't have participated in the chase if we knew it was for a nineth place. But Finetto just couldn't compete with the speed of the other top sprinters. We might have to consider that for future flat stages. Not to mention Fabio Sabatini, who was too tired to even catch any wheel.

For me, it was a pretty easy day. I had no problems with the high pace and finished 47th, along with Peter Sagan. The news from Izagirre, Sicard and Talansky are good for me, although it's hard to be happy about other riders crashing. Lucky for us, Sylvester's early crash didn't harm him.

Tomorrow's flat stage is spiced up by a small hill shortly in front of the finish. Maybe that'll suit Mauro better.

Stay tuned,

So, Dominik with only few stages, as already a big lead over the other contendes, and only riders from your team are only contenders.

+1 Looks like the challenge now will be staying on the bike,
rather than trying to out climb the other contenders.

Another flat stage. It's not too long this time but the hill 12 kms from the finish could provide a small difficulty or even a chance for a rider to break away.

Dominik's Pre-Race Comment

We aim for another good sprint result with Mauro Finetto. Also, either Peter Sagan or even Vincenzo Nibali with his great descending skills might try an attack on the last hill.

Live Ticker

i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/cunego59/GT%20-%20Vuelta/51.jpg
Km 5:
Daniel Oss is among the first escapees of the day.
.
i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/cunego59/GT%20-%20Vuelta/52.jpg
Km 52:
But he only makes it to the second group, one minute behind the leading 8 and five minutes in front of the pack.
.
Km 80:
More riders attack and eventually, they all reunite. With 90 kms to go, 16 riders are 7'30 in front. Among them are Dennis Van Winden and Roger Kluge, who took already part in a successful break in stage two.
.
Km 140:
30 kms to go and they're still three minutes in front. Oss unfortunately fell back, he hadn't the legs today.
.
i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/cunego59/GT%20-%20Vuelta/53.jpg
Km 150:
Jan Bakelandts and Inigo Cuesta attack from the pack. They quickly reach the break.
.
i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/cunego59/GT%20-%20Vuelta/54.jpg
Km 158:
Interesting: Vincenzo Nibali attacks with 12 kms to go, right before the top of the hill.
.
i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/cunego59/GT%20-%20Vuelta/55.jpg
Km 164:
Nibali reached an leads the break. 6 kms to go and they are still a minute away. Could this move really succeed?
.
i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/cunego59/GT%20-%20Vuelta/56.jpg
Km 168:
After all the work he did, Nibali can't sprint for the win here. But the break is still more than a minute in front so the work will be rewarded.
.
i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/cunego59/GT%20-%20Vuelta/57.jpg
Km 170:
Jan Bakelandts spreads his arms in joy. He takes a big win! Martijn Maaskant finishes second, Nibali is totally exhausted and comes in 16th. Van Winden on four is the new overall leader. Kluge is now second and Nibali already third in the GC.
.
i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/cunego59/GT%20-%20Vuelta/58.jpg
Km 170:
Samuel Sanchez is the first rider from the pack to cross the line. He loses, or rather Nibali gains, 1'17! What a huge success for the Italian. Sanchez, the second best of the overall contenders, is now already 1'26 behind Nibali.
.
Km 170:
Sagan and Finetto of course didn't really sprint since they didn't want to decrease the gap to the front. Nevertheless, Sagan finished fourth of the peloton, Finetto sixth and Nerz 11th.

Dominik's Comment

Fantastic! Just fantastic! What a move by Vincenzo! These seconds may come in very handy later. And also, it was a demonstration of his strength. His opponents are warned!

It was another calm day for me, I tested my legs in the final sprint, again with a nice result, but under those conditions, that doesn't mean much. Anyway, tomorrow is the first really steep finish so we'll see how good the favorites really are. The GC should be shaken up quite a bit. It should be an interesting stage to watch, so stay tuned!

Really great and tactically riding by Nibali! He've earned some important seconds. Keep it going Smile

Thank you all for the comments. It was a great stage indeed. Nibali is really good at this. It was the same in the Giro, as you may remember, with Nibali gaining a lot of time in the first stages. Time he needed as Duarte mostly outclimbed him. We'll see how Nibbles can handle Anton later on.

Anyway, here's the next stage:

The first real challenge awaits the riders today. The first 170 kms are rather easy but the final of the stage could be very demanding. Especially the last ascent shouldn't be underestimated.

Dominik's Pre-Race Comment

Today is the first day that matters. The final ascent might produce the first notable time gaps. We're all in good shape and hope that especially me and Vincenzo will perform good.

Live Ticker

i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/cunego59/GT%20-%20Vuelta/61.jpg
Km 16:
Evidentally, the riders have a lot of respect for this stage. It took a long time until Rene Weissinger launches the first attack.
.
Km 28:
Over the top of the first mountain, nine riders found together, among them GC's sixth and seventh, Vandewalle and O'Grady.
.
i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/cunego59/GT%20-%20Vuelta/62.jpg
Km 66:
Juan Angel Gomez Marchante crosses the second mountain first. Their lead grew to almost seven minutes.
.
i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/cunego59/GT%20-%20Vuelta/63.jpg
Km 126:
While the advance of the group is already decreasing, Riccardo Riccó attacks. He lost already a lot of time, so he's no GC threat. Julián Sanchez Pimienta follows him.
.
i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/cunego59/GT%20-%20Vuelta/64.jpg
Km 190:
Mostly Katusha and Euskaltel are doing the work. On the foot of the penultimate climb, the escapees are only 1'20 in front. 67 riders are left in the main group
.
i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/cunego59/GT%20-%20Vuelta/65.jpg
Km 197:
Under the pressure of Szmyd and Sagan, the group splits. 30 riders are together, from the big guns, Valverde is missing. Only Ricco is left in front. Nerz is still present and looks decent.
.
i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/cunego59/GT%20-%20Vuelta/66.jpg
Km 205:
The group reduced even more. 17 riders are together at the bottom of the last climb. Samuel Sanchez sprints for six bonus seconds at the intermediate sprint.
.
i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/cunego59/GT%20-%20Vuelta/67.jpg
Km 207:
Anton and Gilbert created a small gap after the intermediate sprint but Sagan is bringing them back when Joaquim Rodriguez attacks!
.
i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/cunego59/GT%20-%20Vuelta/68.jpg
Km 207:
Dominik Nerz can't keep up with the very front. He's still in the first big group but is slowing down.
.
i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/cunego59/GT%20-%20Vuelta/69.jpg
Km 209:
Nibali really raised the pace now and only Rodriguez and Antón can follow. Gilbert is 30 seconds in front.
.
i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/cunego59/GT%20-%20Vuelta/610.jpg
Km 210:
Dominik Nerz is on his last legs now. He tries to keep up with the group around Nieve, Astarloza and Ricco, which is still pretty good. At the front, Samuel Sanchez reached the group around Nibali.
.
i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/cunego59/GT%20-%20Vuelta/611.jpg
Km 212:
One kilometer to go! The climbers caught up with Gilbert, Antón is looking like he's the fastest now!
.
i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/cunego59/GT%20-%20Vuelta/612.jpg
Km 213:
But despite his climbing efforts, Gilbert has a final punch and takes the stage win. Nibali finishes third and overtakes red.
.
i1221.photobucket.com/albums/dd464/cunego59/GT%20-%20Vuelta/613.jpg
Km 213:
Dominik Nerz didn't have the best day. He finishes about four minutes off, shortly behind Mikel Nieve, and along his compatriot Christian Knees. Sagan looks like the favorite for white at the moment.

Dominik's Comment

Hm. For the team, it was a pretty great stage. Vincenzo rode very well and regained the red jersey. We also have four riders in the Top 21. For me personally, though, it wasn't the best day. I have hoped to be able to keep up a bit longer. But saying that is also a great sign for my development. I mean, a year ago, the 27th place at a hilly GT stage would have been totally awesome. And finishing along the likes of Mikel Nieve and David Arroyo is pretty good, so maybe I shouldn't be too strict with myself.

As for the overall, it seems to be a battle of four: Nibali, Sanchez, Anton and Rodriguez are obviously pretty strong. Let's hope Nibali can keep the red jersey until Madrid.

Tomorrow should be calmer again,

Yours,
