That's quite funny. I remember watching the 1999 Tour de France, after the first long ITT, the Spanish commentators were talking about how suprising it was Armstrong's dominance. He had smashed both TTs, and had won massive time on, specially, Zülle after the stage with the Passage du Gois. They were confident that, come the mountains, Armstrong wouldn't be able to keep up with the best. Then Sestriere happened.

I'm not old enough to have seen that live Pfft but that was definitely a WTF performance. A guy who had never climbed with the top 30 climbers or so in any mountain ever, suddenly decides "those two elite climbers up ahead have gained too much time for my taste" and just closes the gap in seconds like they're standing still.

Then he decides to up the pace without actually attacking, and nobody can hold his wheel.

Ridiculous

EDIT: This after winning the prologue and then dominating the first long time trial. A good analogy to show what kind of rider he was before that would be if you imagine Gasparotto or Gerrans doing that. Ridiculous indeed.

But, do you know who was still considered as the biggest G.T. talent back then ? (of course you do, it's a rethorical question) : Jan Ullrich.
I naturally assumed, back then, that on the first occasion Ullrich would crush that random American guy who had just won because of a lack of proper opposition, and wasn't even a natural born G.T. talent.

We all know what happened the next six years...

Well i do know who it was because Jan Ullrich was my favourite rider of all time. In 1996 he litterally was leading across every damn mountain for Bjarne Riis, he was definately the absolute strongest rider that year and. And the 1997 he finally won after a fantastic race. The stage where he leads over a couple of mountains and then attacks virenque pantai riis etc on the last climb. Damn i miss him , he was maybe the biggest victim of Operation Puerto.

However it wasnt just his opponent who ruined his possible tour victoriess. It was his life style. Eating like a pig all year, always being overweight, not wanting to train, partying to much, taking coke/amphetamine etc.

Lance's transformation from sprinter to climber and tt monster after his disease is just undescribeable, I did say that Froome might be able to hang on sometime on Contador and Schleck, but i really dont see him beat them at all. I dont see him driving from them, but ofc he is the most likely rider to be the third wheel when these to guys attack. Wiggins wont stand a chance, mark my words.

Froome will race this years vuelta and this will show some kind of strenght comparison and relationship.

Froome hasnt ride that much this year, neither last year, so if he is riding the vuelta and gets dropped i will not accept any "he is too tired" arguments.

And the guy who used the logic about Michael Rasmussen and Contador is just absolutely dumb.

Contador did ride first couple of months this year, and whole last year. He has only missed 5 months of racing. Michael Rasmussen did miss two whole year, and will never come back. He was blacklisted , nobody did dare to touch.

I can not see how Contador should loose any of his talent or riding skills.
Stop being foolish.

Basso, Vino, Kaschekin and Valverde and those like's did all miss between 1-2 years racing. Vino did never became as good again in the mountains as before. Basso did become the very same basso who was riding for Fassa Bortolo. The Basso riding for CSC had actually develep an acceleration the last two years where he could follow armstrong.
Same goes for Kaschekin.

Valverde will be back at his normal level next year.

I really miss elegant powerfull real climbes like Contador, Mayo and Heras.
When they attack it is/was very beautifull and epic.

At least Lance had something before disease. Before Froomes illness, he was a domestique at best. Now he is crushing. As Aquarius said, when Armstrong on Sestriere said "I don't like that gap" and just went without attacking and dropped everyone. THAT IS EXACTLY WHAT FROOME DID ON LA TOUSSUIRE Almost a carbon copy.

you are all talking about Froome and Wiggins.
WHAT ABOUT Boasson Hagen ?
This guy is leading the peloton and dropping second rate climbers, every day. WTF ?? Like Hincapie in the Postal train.
Do you see Ballan, Burghardt, Boonen or even Cancellara do this ????? Still nobody seem to question this. Didn't Hincapie admit what was up in those days. Hincapie OK a bit older has to let go every climb while Bo Hagen throws off Daniel Martin and others. Yesterday i see even Eisel lead on the Aubisque

That's not nearly as suprising to me. He is known as a strong climber for a sprinter/punchuer/whatever he is, and he is putting 100% in. Not saying he's clean, but if Cav can do it, EBH can. Pfft

Boasson Hagen isn't British so people don't inherently hate him

Half of this thread is people complaining about Rogers and Porte.

But lemme guess, they're part of the Commonwealth, so that's why everyone hates them?

Idiots.

Yeah but now he's doing this day after day. Still, it's less suspicious than say Rogers, Froome or Wiggins.

I think Hagen is the natural engine, Cance and few others were able to scatter the peloton earlier, he is maybe evolving in this sort of rider, he is similar to Sagan.
One can not exclude the possibility of doping not just in Sky, but Hagen seems really prepared for the Tour, he was great also last year, even in the mountains...
I'll be back

Anyway i like Boasson Hagen, in the game always try to buy him.
İts just that for me time trialist like most of Sky were can climb better then climbers saddens me. Actually i hope that Columbia Coldeportes can evolve into the terror that Herrera and Parra were in the mountains.
İf they can get Uran and Henao back, together with Duarte, Atapuma etc..
İ just hope somebody can kill this US postal - Sky tactic of smothering mountain stages.

Its not like EBH is just starting to do this in the TdF, he's been winning races in above average numbers already for 6 years and is probably the most obvious talent alongside Sagan the peleton has to offer.. The only outragous thing about his performance is that he's a god damn domestique of British Cycling Angry

If memory serves me well, he has been doing better and better in mountains ever since 2011 tour of oman where he was the closest to following Gesink on the short climb

Astana now got the four millions they planed to use on Schlecks free. Would be hillarious if they signed Froome.

It really killed the Tour this year.

And apperantly this thread is the jail cell for people who have anything bad to say about SKY.

They weren't trying? Wiggins was beat by then, while Froome wanted to go on. If Wiggins wasn't trying why wouldnt he have just helped Froome cross the gap to Valverde. What a ludicrous thing to say.

They're pratcically chatting and sitting up at the same speed as the chasing group.

Can somebody explain to me how Wiggins turns into a better climber than VDB and Nibali when they are starting to hit their peak and they raped him in all previous years? And with Froome and Wiggins chit-chatting their way up, Sky demotes the Tour to a shit small race like Cav would say.
Pozzato sucks!

Seems quite silly that they didn't just go and grab the stage win then doesn't it.

No they weren't. The only one that didn't go full gas was Froome. The "chat" was that Froome was telling Wiggins to go faster and he was clearly at his max.

I'm not a fan of how Sky are killing the competition, but making them look like villains from a comic book is too much.
