11th in the GC isn't bad. Could've been better tough.

Also some sort of significant gaps starting to form in the rankings...

Apart from us Sad

Rather disappointing race for us, didn't expect such a strong climbing field but were still targeting a top 10, top 15 perhaps but 23rd is a bit... meh Frown

STAGE 1

STAGE INFORMATION

Güeñes - Güeñes 152km

Stage 1 is a hilly stage which can go anywhere. It could end in a mass sprint, the favourites can get a gap on the last hill or does the breakaways manages to stay away from the peleton? Joining the break can also deliver a lot of mountain points, so expect a lot of riders trying to get those.

THE RACE

Welcome at the start of this year’s Volta Ciclista al Pais Vasco. 168 riders are at the start, but only 1 can win the GC. Most riders transfered from Catalunya, so they already have some miles in their legs. However, a fan with a shirt from a former cycling team from this region has mixed with the peleton. The organizers managed to get him out of it very quickly.

i1274.photobucket.com/albums/y433/Marcovdw/UCPCL/Volta%20Ciclista%20al%20Pais%20Vasco/Stage%201/PCM0002_zps6255ea6e.jpg

The first attacker is Rohan Dennis (HAI). He tries to get away with some others, but they soon get caught by the peleton.

i1274.photobucket.com/albums/y433/Marcovdw/UCPCL/Volta%20Ciclista%20al%20Pais%20Vasco/Stage%201/PCM0003_zps0303fc67.jpg

A new breakaway comes in their place, and the peleton gives them some space. Jesus Herrada (MAG) wins the first mountain sprint in front of Koen de Kort (ING). Behind them are Fumiyuki Beppu (TLI), Marco Haller (RBM), Christopher Juul-Jensen (TUG), Dan Craven (BAR) and Jonathan Bellis (ITV). The group behind them consist of: Sergej Lagutin (TUG), Martin Gilbert (BAR), Alexandr Kvachuck (PER), Alexander Serebryakov (CCC), Egor Silin and Daniel Lloyd (both CAT).

i1274.photobucket.com/albums/y433/Marcovdw/UCPCL/Volta%20Ciclista%20al%20Pais%20Vasco/Stage%201/PCM0004_zpsa9ace2b9.jpg

And here we have them all together. They have a lead of 3 and a half minute.

i1274.photobucket.com/albums/y433/Marcovdw/UCPCL/Volta%20Ciclista%20al%20Pais%20Vasco/Stage%201/PCM0005_zps480376ee.jpg

De Kort wins the mountain sprint in front of Herrada and Kvachuck. They have a 5 minute lead to the peleton.

i1274.photobucket.com/albums/y433/Marcovdw/UCPCL/Volta%20Ciclista%20al%20Pais%20Vasco/Stage%201/PCM0006_zps5763c85c.jpg

The lead has increased to 6 minutes. Allianz-BMW takes charge of the peleton.

i1274.photobucket.com/albums/y433/Marcovdw/UCPCL/Volta%20Ciclista%20al%20Pais%20Vasco/Stage%201/PCM0007_zps01374b24.jpg

Koen De Kort wins another mountain sprint. The gap is decreasing, it's only 5 minutes now.

i1274.photobucket.com/albums/y433/Marcovdw/UCPCL/Volta%20Ciclista%20al%20Pais%20Vasco/Stage%201/PCM0008_zpsc380770e.jpg

Herrada beats De Kort in the next mountain sprint at the Alto de la Escrita.

i1274.photobucket.com/albums/y433/Marcovdw/UCPCL/Volta%20Ciclista%20al%20Pais%20Vasco/Stage%201/PCM0009_zpsc887a574.jpg

Dan Craven wins the next mountain sprint in front of Herrada and De Kort. The lead is about 3 minutes.

i1274.photobucket.com/albums/y433/Marcovdw/UCPCL/Volta%20Ciclista%20al%20Pais%20Vasco/Stage%201/PCM0010_zps326e11a6.jpg

But De Kort wins the first intermediate sprint. This time Craven finishes second and Herrada third.

i1274.photobucket.com/albums/y433/Marcovdw/UCPCL/Volta%20Ciclista%20al%20Pais%20Vasco/Stage%201/PCM0011_zps34174a0f.jpg

Daniel Lloyd takes the next sprint. The breakaway still has a 2 minute lead over the peleton, which is lead all day by Allianz-BMW.

i1274.photobucket.com/albums/y433/Marcovdw/UCPCL/Volta%20Ciclista%20al%20Pais%20Vasco/Stage%201/PCM0012_zpsd76332b7.jpg

And Silin wins this one quite easily in front of Lagutin and Herrada. We have 10 kilometers to go and they still have a 1 and a half minute lead.

i1274.photobucket.com/albums/y433/Marcovdw/UCPCL/Volta%20Ciclista%20al%20Pais%20Vasco/Stage%201/PCM0013_zpsb99fcfe9.jpg

Jan Bakelants (LPU) jumps out of the peleton and is looking for the breakaway himself!

i1274.photobucket.com/albums/y433/Marcovdw/UCPCL/Volta%20Ciclista%20al%20Pais%20Vasco/Stage%201/PCM0014_zps7111cde2.jpg

The last intermediate sprint. Lloyd takes it again. Bakelants joined the breakaway, while Serebryakov can't follow the speed of the break. The lead is decreased to 1 minute.

i1274.photobucket.com/albums/y433/Marcovdw/UCPCL/Volta%20Ciclista%20al%20Pais%20Vasco/Stage%201/PCM0015_zps25d5f37a.jpg

5km to go. There are no trains. Filippo Pozzato (MCS) leads the peleton.

i1274.photobucket.com/albums/y433/Marcovdw/UCPCL/Volta%20Ciclista%20al%20Pais%20Vasco/Stage%201/PCM0016_zpsd3313698.jpg

3 kilometer to go and the break still has a small gap.

i1274.photobucket.com/albums/y433/Marcovdw/UCPCL/Volta%20Ciclista%20al%20Pais%20Vasco/Stage%201/PCM0017_zpsaa1e43af.jpg

2 kilometers, will the break succeed?

i1274.photobucket.com/albums/y433/Marcovdw/UCPCL/Volta%20Ciclista%20al%20Pais%20Vasco/Stage%201/PCM0018_zps8cdec89a.jpg

We are under the 1km-flag and Bakelants opens the sprint.

i1274.photobucket.com/albums/y433/Marcovdw/UCPCL/Volta%20Ciclista%20al%20Pais%20Vasco/Stage%201/PCM0019_zps0ff6eb8f.jpg

500 meters. Bakelants is still leading. The other breakaway-members are behind and the sprinters start as well.

i1274.photobucket.com/albums/y433/Marcovdw/UCPCL/Volta%20Ciclista%20al%20Pais%20Vasco/Stage%201/PCM0021_zpsfe9bd92d.jpg

Jan Bakelants winst the first stage in style. His late attempt proved to be the right thing to do.

i1274.photobucket.com/albums/y433/Marcovdw/UCPCL/Volta%20Ciclista%20al%20Pais%20Vasco/Stage%201/PCM0022_zpsbabedba2.jpg

Daniel Lloyd finishes second in front of Herrada, Juul-Jensen and Lagutin.

Oscar Freire (TAM) wins the sprint of the peleton. They are given the same time as the winner.

Another win for Lierse - Pizza Ullo Wink

Ooh, twice in one day, not too bad. I'm probably out of the rankings, so maybe I should just try to get some nice victories.
Changed my sig, this was getting absurd.

Good stage for ING. Very good, hope De Kort can hold on to his jersey.

Scheirlinckx would have fought for the win if it wasn't for the break. Serebryakov, why you lost contact?

Quiet race for the team.

@Marcovdw
Great report, but it would be nice if you included the amount of km's to go into it Smile Also, the report says 144 riders start the race, but there are 168 riders in the results Wink

Decent race from the team, didn't send any of the teams "Big Guns" (Kittel, Greipel, Kloden and Guardini) so it's nice to see Ulrikkson showing some form in the peloton sprint.

VOLTA CICLISTA AL PAIS VASCO

STAGE 2

STAGE INFORMATION

Güeñes - Vitoria-Gasteiz 165,7km
forallmyfriends.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/04/profile-Vuelta-Ciclista-al-Pais-Vasco-2012-stage2.png
Stage 2 is almost a copy of stage 1. Hilly, but the end is flat. However, a few kilometers before the finish, there is the Alto de Zaldiaran. Will the favourites attack? Will the sprinters survive the hills? Will the breakaway be forgotten?

Luca Paolini (RBM), Luca Solari (MCS) and Christophe Riblon (BAR) are the first 3 to pass the first mountain of today. They were attacking just before it.

i1274.photobucket.com/albums/y433/Marcovdw/UCPCL/Volta%20Ciclista%20al%20Pais%20Vasco/Stage%202/PCM0002_zps21305cb7.jpg

And this is today's breakaway: Paolini, Solari, Riblon, Peter Kennaugh (ITV), Manuel Cardoso (RBM), Reinhardt Janse van Rensburg and John-Lee Augustyn (both TLI). Behind them is a group with Francesco Failli (FWB), Laurent Didier (IOQ), Maarten Wynants (ING), Leopold Konig (CCC), Xavier Florencio (CAT) and Damiano Caruso (HAI)

Another mountain sprint. Augustyn wins it in front of Paolini and Solari. The two groups have merged into 1 large group, which has a 2 minute lead.

Oh no, Florencio has a flat tire. Luckily he's able to return to the break.

Augustyn wins the mountain sprint again, but this time Solari and Paolini swapped places. Meanwile, Robert Ulriksson (SGM) and Davide Rebellin (TUG) attacked out of the peleton. They are 2:30 behind the front runners and 2:00 in front of the peleton.

i1274.photobucket.com/albums/y433/Marcovdw/UCPCL/Volta%20Ciclista%20al%20Pais%20Vasco/Stage%202/PCM0006_zps33bbc8a0.jpg

Failli wins the first intermediate sprint in front of Caruso and Kennaugh. 2 minutes behind the break are the 2 chasers. The peleton is 5 minutes behind the leaders.

i1274.photobucket.com/albums/y433/Marcovdw/UCPCL/Volta%20Ciclista%20al%20Pais%20Vasco/Stage%202/PCM0007_zps04c705bf.jpg

i1274.photobucket.com/albums/y433/Marcovdw/UCPCL/Volta%20Ciclista%20al%20Pais%20Vasco/Stage%202/PCM0008_zps548da7e1.jpg

Florencio wins the intermediate sprint in Trevino in front of Paolini and Cardoso. Ulriksson/Rebellin are only 1 minute behind them. The peleton follows at 3 minutes.

i1274.photobucket.com/albums/y433/Marcovdw/UCPCL/Volta%20Ciclista%20al%20Pais%20Vasco/Stage%202/PCM0009_zps22fcbd16.jpg

The next mountain sprint is forDidier. Janse van Rensburg and Florencio are behind him. The peleton closed in to 2:30 minute.

i1274.photobucket.com/albums/y433/Marcovdw/UCPCL/Volta%20Ciclista%20al%20Pais%20Vasco/Stage%202/PCM0010_zpsd0c467be.jpg

10 kilometers left, and the favourites attack. Alberto Contador (AGT), Thomas Voeckler (ING) and Samuel Sanchez (ABC) are trying to win some time..

i1274.photobucket.com/albums/y433/Marcovdw/UCPCL/Volta%20Ciclista%20al%20Pais%20Vasco/Stage%202/PCM0012_zpsfa46c79b.jpg

Solari-Riblon-Augustyn is the order at the last mountain of today, the Alto de Zaldiaran. The three favourites are back in the peleton.

i1274.photobucket.com/albums/y433/Marcovdw/UCPCL/Volta%20Ciclista%20al%20Pais%20Vasco/Stage%202/PCM0013_zps7ea760c0.jpg

Ulriksson and Rebellin are caught. Some other favourites attack, including Daniel Moreno (CAT) and Rui Costa (TAP).

i1274.photobucket.com/albums/y433/Marcovdw/UCPCL/Volta%20Ciclista%20al%20Pais%20Vasco/Stage%202/PCM0014_zpsf8f76975.jpg

5 km to go. Solari has a little gap. 25 seconds behind him are Riblon and König. 20 seconds behind them are the other members of the breakaway. 1 minute behind the leader is the peleton, including all the favourites.

i1274.photobucket.com/albums/y433/Marcovdw/UCPCL/Volta%20Ciclista%20al%20Pais%20Vasco/Stage%202/PCM0015_zps8aac243a.jpg

Riblon and Konig are caught by the rest of the breakaway. At that moment, Phillipe Gilbert (LPU) attacks.

i1274.photobucket.com/albums/y433/Marcovdw/UCPCL/Volta%20Ciclista%20al%20Pais%20Vasco/Stage%202/PCM0016_zpsd0fb3a2c.jpg

1000 meters for Solari. He has a gap over his former breakaway companions. Gilbert is closing in.

i1274.photobucket.com/albums/y433/Marcovdw/UCPCL/Volta%20Ciclista%20al%20Pais%20Vasco/Stage%202/PCM0017_zpse91c7896.jpg

They came close, but Luca Solari raises his arms.

i1274.photobucket.com/albums/y433/Marcovdw/UCPCL/Volta%20Ciclista%20al%20Pais%20Vasco/Stage%202/PCM0018_zps29cc532f.jpg

The Italian can't believe it. He won a WT-race. Maarten Wynants finishes second and Luca Paolini takes the third place. Paolini is the new GC-leader.

i1274.photobucket.com/albums/y433/Marcovdw/UCPCL/Volta%20Ciclista%20al%20Pais%20Vasco/Stage%202/PCM0019_zps103ae239.jpg

Great job defending the jersey.. Rolling Eyes

But good report again Smile
Changed my sig, this was getting absurd.

A decent ride by Florencio. Wink

TheManxMissile
Great from Red Bull to grab the leaders jersey, if only for a short time!
Nicely done by Reinardt and John-Lee. The South African duo delivering decent points.

Bit quicker pace would be awesome, especially as you have done the whole race apparently Smile

If you've done them and have time, 1 a day would be great Smile
