We are happy that the management of Volvo – STARK have found it in their hearts to forgive us for the small mishap last year and we can now bring you an interview with the manager himself.
First the mandatory question: What are your goals for the season?
Isn’t that obvious after Tour Down Under? We want to win whenever we get the chance.
Obviously some races like the cobbled classics and Tour de France have a special place in our hearts, but we have strengthened the roster a lot this year and there are no longer races on the calendar we forfeit before even starting.
In your race bulletins you still refer to your riders as “Falcons” even though Falcon is no longer sponsoring the team…
I’ll just have to correct you there. We needed some more money so Falcon stepped away from being a title sponsor, but they are still a minor sponsor with a place on the jersey. And even though Volvo are great cars “The Volvos” just haven’t got quite the same vibe as “The Falcons”…
I get your point. Over these last couple of years the team has developed faster than anyone could have expected. How do you explain that?
It’s really very simple: A lot of Nordic riders were kept in a role as domestiques on their old teams and were never really given a chance to prove their worth. The team being strictly Nordic makes it a safe environment where everyone can speak their native tongue and there are no major culture clashes.
We have given the riders a chance and most of them have flourished as the result of more confidence. You only win if you believe you can win!
Lately it even seems that you glorified remarks about lifting cycling to a new level in the entire North wasn’t just warm air as Christina Watches – Onfone finished 7th on last years continental rankings and Joker Merida just had their WT-race debut with a great performance. What are your thoughts on that?
Well we can’t take the honour for CWO’s success – we have merely given them a bit more competition and proved that it is possible to do well even if your riders aren’t superstars… yet.
As for Joker it’s more a result of them signing a bunch of foreigners than anything else. I think it’s too bad and it wont do Norwegian cycling much good to have a good few talented Norwegians locked in as domestiques on the team.
That’s also the reason I got so happy when I heard Jardar decided to sponsor a new Norwegian team.
Evil tongues might say that it’s more Scandinavian cycling than Nordic cycling that benefits from your efforts?
That’s rubbish!
I know the peloton will only have two Finnish riders this season compared to three last year, but both of those riders are on my team and we have a scout dedicated to finding talented youngsters in Finland, but it’s not as easy as it sounds since Finland haven’t got a lot of races so he spends a lot of time just riding around looking at random cyclists on the roads.
As for Iceland they have never had a single professional cyclist, but even that might be changing sometime soon.
Are you suggesting that an Icelandic team is about to form?
Not at all.
One of our doctors were on Iceland for vacation in December and spotted a kid climbing the biggest hills like it was nothing. Unfortunately our doctor was also riding a bike – yes bicycle holiday in Iceland in December…
Anyway he had no chance whatsoever of catching this youngster to learn his name. So now we have sent a scout to Iceland to track him down. We are still to hear back from him and if he actually manage to find anything interesting up there you will be the first to know.

Volvo – STARK has made public that they are looking for a co-sponsor to replace STARK next season.
RadioShack has announced that they will cease sponsorship after this season as will Orica.
Gazprom have already after the teams first race decided that this will be their only year as main sponsor.
Farnese Vini - Selle Italia will have to look for someone to replace Selle Italia as co-sponsor.
Perhaps as a result of failing to attract the top Swiss rider Cancellara BMC have announced that they will pull sponsorhip at the end of the season.
Danish Continental team Glud & Marstrand – LRØ will have to look for a replacement for Glud & Marstrand. The same goes for Concordia Forsikring.

Giro della Calabria
A warm up race so I’ll get it over with fairly quickly. We have no goal as such, so the guys are free to take their chances.
Stage 2: Soverato – Vibo Valentia
A bit harder than yesterday, but otherwise pretty much the same deal.
Carlström in the break. They get a lead of more than seven minutes.
On the final climb the favourites start moving. Among them Chris Anker Sørensen.
Going in to the last three km Ascani have a small lead to 25 riders behind.
He just manages to keep the lead.
Löfkvist and Chris Anker does well finishing in the first group considering this is their first race of the season.

Stage 3: Pizzo - Regio Calabria
Could very well be another day for a breakaway.
Today it's Ludvigssons turn to be in the break.
Type 1 - Sanofi are pulling on the wet roads, but the break looks like it might make it.
For a sprint in this group Dall’Antonio of Miche is the favourite, but Tobias Ludvigsson should be able to fight him all the way if he keeps his head calm!
2km to go. Dall’Antonio in last position, Ludvigsson in the middle and Celli in the front.
The Miche rider sets in his sprint and quickly passes everyone. Tobias jumps to his wheel and puts in everything he’s got the last 800 m.
The young Swede gets his first professional win!
Unfortunately 1 second to slow to take the youth jersey.

Sutty: Yeah, that what happens when the teams chasing a sprint aren't strong enough And the team-win is a nice bonus, and at least it proves that we're starting to get ready for the first goals of the season.
Ian: That's how I felt! Tobias has 72/72 in spr/acc and Dell'Antonio had 72/73 so it was all about keeping my head cold and hoping that form and daily form was on my side.

 Vuelta a Andalucía
The purpose of this race is to get the cobbles-team ready for Omloop het Nieuwsblad next week. We'll see what we can manage to pick up along the way.
Stage 1: San Fernando
6 km flat uncomplicated prologue. Hushovd and Bak will be hoping to get off to a good start today.
Young talent Jorge Zambrano is one of the main favourites to this stage even though it’s his first year as pro. He does not disappoint setting a good time early on.
When Belarussian champion Kiriyenka is off big names like Samuels Sanchez and Vaitkus have failed to beat the young Spaniards time. Kiryiyenka is no better.
This looks like a day for the youngsters as Lawson Craddock sets new provisional best.
Since Bak didn’t manage much Hushovd is our last weapon against the youngsters. The big Norwegian is 7th.

Stage 2: Zahar a de los Atunes - Benalmádena
In spite of the early hills this could very well be a bunch sprint. Hushovd will be op again home favourites Freire and Rojas, though the latter will have a hard time being only Endura rider in the race.
Two Falcons in the early break. Havard Nybö and Thomas Riber-Sellebjerg.
Thomas wins both the two first KOM sprints, though contested by Rafael Valls of Joker Merida.
The third KOM is much closer, but Thomas will be wearing the jersey tomorrow.
As everyone is getting ready for the final sprint Francesco Reda crash and take half the peloton with him.
Going in to the last five km Rojas is pulling the 26 rider front group containing five Falcons.
It’s a tough sprint and Hushovd never manage to find the space to get past the other sprinters.

Vuelta a Andalucía
Stage 4: Montemayor - Les Gabias
Expected to be a sprint finish in a fairly big group. Another day for Thor to stay awake.
Plenty of attacking early on, but the peloton won’t let anyone just slip away, so nothing much happens before the final 20 km.
The last hill was ridden very aggressively orchestrated by L.L. Sánchez so the sprint preparations doesn’t turn out quite as we had hoped…
Two rides just manage to keep the others at bay, but Thor does great in the sprint behind.

Stage 5: Jaén - La Guardia de Jaén
A hard hilly finish. Our guys will fight for it, but it will be a tough day.
Havard get in the morning break along with good climbers like Antón and Anacona.
It quickly becomes obvious that the Norwegian champion is in over his head on the climbs.
With 20 km to go it looks like the break might make it while Movistar is trying to secure their GC lead.
But then with 16 km to go L.L. Sanchez attacks once again forcing Thor and Lars to try and keep up with him, but Sanchéz really is a level above everyone else in this race.
Antón beats his breakaway companions on the final steep hill as the favourites group catch up with them from behind.
Thor and Lars does well to hang on and climb a few places in the GC.
