11/7-15/7 Sibiu Cycling Tour (cat.2.1)

11/7 Stage 1/5 Sibiu – Historical Centre Prologue (ITT) 2.4 km

Christian Andersen reports: While Rasmussen and the team is China, we are here in Sibiu, Romania. Sibiu is a city in Transylvania, and former capital of the Principality of Transylvania. The first recorded reference to the city is from 1191, at the time called Cibinium.

The Great Square, Sibiu’s Old Town:

i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/Sibiu%20Old%20Town_zpsvlabawlc.jpg

With 2 relative short ITT, and some hard uphill finish, we expect that Davide Malacarne can compete here.

A quiet start to the race in Romania, but nothing to worry about Wink

Not much time lost really. A long way to go...

7/7-20/7 Tour of Qinghai Lake (2.HC)

12/7 Stage 6/13 Xihaizhen - Qilian : 203.2 km

Rasmussen reports: We are here in Xihaizhen (西海镇) meaning West Town, for centuries a town of very mixed ethnicity, Tibetan, Chinese, Mongolian, Hui, Salar, etc. The town is known to be Chinas first nuclear weapons base.

Xihaizhen:

Pre-race strategy: Another long mountain stage of more than 200 km, we will focus only on Ellisonde, holding on to the favorites as long as possible.

Profile:

i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/0_zpsplhx4kta.jpg

Again a very hot (36 °C) long stage, the morning break is 6 riders, when they reach the hills before the first climb they got 8’54, 120 km to go.

i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/1_zpsuqawonid.jpg

The next attack unfolds over the top of the first HC climb, it is Emanuele Sella (Lampre) countered by Andres Diaz (5-Hour Energy) getting a gap on the peloton before the descent.

i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/2_zpsh9otuih7.jpg

Over the top of the last climb the favorite group is down to just 25 riders, the only attacker left in front is Emanuele Sella.

i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/3_zpsxaiq1e3q.jpg

They can’t catch Sella, he wins the stage with 46 seconds to the favorites, Kenny Elissonde wins the sprint claiming 2nd.

Kenny rode well and has plenty of time to challenge for those podium places Wink

11/7-15/7 Sibiu Cycling Tour (cat.2.1)

12/7 Stage 2/5 Sibiu – Balea Lake : 143.0 km

Christian Andersen reports: Todays stage is a short but hard mountain stage, heading south east for Balea Lake or Lacul Bâlea, situated at 2,034 m in the Făgăraș Mountains, there is no actual town, just a few hotels.

i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/img_1398a_zps9efagp7p.jpg

Pre-race strategy: We expect this to be a perfect chance for Davide Malacarne, he have to gain time in the mountains to prepare for comming losses in the ITT, he will attack today unless he has very day legs. Malacarne is in prime shape at the moment.

Profile:

i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/0_zpst9iwb5cb.jpg

It is very hot in Romania just as it is in china, with a clear blue sky and 39°C. The morning break is Preben Van Hecke (Topsport Vlaanderen), Nicki Sørensen (Saxo), and Artur Detko (Bank BGZ).

i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/1_zpsmyx4jb4f.jpg

As we have an aggressive approach to this stage, we immediately send riders to the front, holding the escapees down to around 3 minutes.

i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/2_zpsebdh8p9v.jpg

The break is caught at the start of the climb, as soon as the elevation is at 7-8%, Davide Malacarne attacks with about 10-12 km to the top.

i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/3_zps4ciawezj.jpg

There is no reaction from the favourite group, until Mattia Cattaneo (Bardiani Valvole) attacks, 20 riders left in the favourite group, 7,5 km to the top. Malacarne has got about a minute at this point.

i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/4_zpsda9pijfa.jpg

Mattia Cattaneo can’t hold the group away, he is reeled in. Then at 3 km to the line Francis De Greef (Accent Jobs) attacks, now just 11 left in the next group. Lasse Bøchman with fantastic legs on this stage, is still in this group.

i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/5_zpsd9c6nmlm.jpg

Davide Malacarne wins a splendid solo victory at Lacul Bâlea with 1’36 to Francis De Greef. Lasse Bøchman takes the last spot on the podium winning the sprint in the 3rd group.

i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/6_zpssjxhzjay.jpg

Christian Andersen: Fantastic stage for us, Davide takes the third win of the season and Bøchmans podium was certainly unexpected.

7/7-20/7 Tour of Qinghai Lake (2.HC)

13/7 Stage 7/13 Qilian - Mt. Dadongshu: 85,3 km

Rasmussen reports: Today a short stage of just 85.3 km, from the small town Qilian to Dadongshu mountain pass, with a finish at 4117 m above sea level. The town is the center of Qilian County (祁连县) an area of 14.000 km2 with a population of about 50.000.

Qilian County, canola flower landscape:

i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/Qilian%20County_zpsphjplljs.jpg

Pre-race strategy: This might be the stage for Ellisonde to attempt a risky attack, if he has good legs trying to advance a little in the GC if possible.

Profile:

i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/0_zpshra83z3m.jpg

The morning break is 3 riders, seemingly riders that should have no chance on a stage like this. They get about 5 min of the peloton.

i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/1_zpsnszu0kon.jpg

As soon as the peloton hits the climb the attacks begin. Yesterday’s stage 4 Nicolas Hartmann (AG2R) has joint the front group, a 2nd group of 5 with yesterday’s winner Sella is right behind the breakaway

Group Navarro/Ellisonde and the situation with 12 km left:

i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/2_zps05s6rcgv.jpg

Over the next 10 km the two front group melt together, while Craddock, Kudus and Atapuma joins Group Navarro from behind. With just a little more than 1 km to the line, it looks like someone from the front group will win the stage. Group Navarro getting close to the finish:

i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/3_zpsu03ygado.jpg

The stage is won by Natnael Berhane (Champion System) over Rafael Valls (Caja Rural), Ellisonde was totally empty near the end, he gets in at 18, losing 1’35.

i358.photobucket.com/albums/oo24/jonta3/4_zpspqezlcsn.jpg

Rasmussen: May seem as a bad stage, but Jacques Janse Van Rensburg lost 2’51 on this stage. Ellisonde is now moved up to GC:5, after a hard day on Mount Dadongshu.
