Modern Times, Old Roads | The End
sutty68
It was Great to see Matthias in the yellow jersey even if it was only for a short time Wink

VoetsT
The team showed some strength here. Not winning isn't a drama, there are plenty of other opportunities in the rest of the season Wink

vanbelle
What is the team of opqs? Do you want to have a screen of opqs stats? Srry my english is not good! I'm a belgian

Ian Butler
Shonak - He won't be lacking confidence, you might be right there Smile Glad you liked the past, present & future bit!

Jakstar22 - It's a very decent start indeed!

sutty68 - It was a nice bonus, just too bad we missed that victory with Matt Wink

VoetsT - Definitely!

vanbelle - Actually it's quite close to the current real life OPQS squad, with some changes though. Kwiatkowski is the big hill/GC talent. Matt is the new Boonen. Van Avermaet is his helper and we also have Bouhanni and Ciolek for the sprints!

What is your next race? Wink

rogvi97 - I'm not 100% sure but I think it was the Tour of Oman. I'm not entirely sure if I'll report back from it, though (unless I get a stage win). So possibly the Omloop!

I wanted to ask you all something here.
Modern Times has been concentrating a lot on Vleminckx' career as a cyclist. For me it's a change from stories like A Day in the Life, where I also focus on the personal life etc...
My question thus is the following: Do you enjoy the story as much despite the lack of 'personal updates'?

Tour of Oman
i67.photobucket.com/albums/h320/MatthiasVleminckx/oma01_zps647f6b58.jpg

The Tour of Oman was an amazing experience. I've never felt this strong this early in the season. I cleaned out the competition here. In four stages that were sprinter-material, I took three victories and a fourth place, thus conquering the Points Classification.

In the fight for the General Classification, it went between Nairo Quintana and Nik Bozic, with my former team mate coming out on top. Surprisingly, Quintana cracked in the fifth stage and even fell of the podium.

Stage 1 Caleb Ewan (EXG) Caleb Ewan (EXG)
Stage 2 Matthias Vleminckx (OPQ) Matthias Vleminckx (OPQ)

Stage 4 Nairo Quintana (MOV) Nairo Quintana (MOV)
Stage 5 Rafael Andriato (SBC) Nik Bozic (EXG)
Stage 6 Matthias Vleminckx (OPQ) Nik Bozic (EXG)

In stage 1, I wasn't warmed up yet!

A moment I'll never forget. My first victory in the Rainbow colors!

Sprinting in strong head wind, everyone was dying

A stage for the power sprinters, aka me!

i67.photobucket.com/albums/h320/MatthiasVleminckx/om05_zpsd25c9895.jpg
Icing on the cake. Meersman finishing second, giving OPQS a 1 - 2

This Tour of Oman is a race I never want to forget. Not necessarily because I took 3 stages, not even because I took my first victory as a World Champion, but because I want to hold on to that feeling. I almost felt indestructible here. I'm in a winning mood and a good flow, so bring on the Belgian opening weekend!

This was also the first race where I had Tom Boonen in the team car. More importantely, for him it was the first time he was in a team car. I guess he would've prefered a Ferrari as a team car, though! But he did good and he'll be leading DS for the Belgian opening weekend!

Can't wait!
Matt

Nice result in Oman!

I enjoy the story the way it is, though I did like A Day in the Life more, if you know what I mean. Though I somehow think you're so far in to this, that you don't need to start with it now. Nearly fifty pages already shows that it works the way it is. Wink

VoetsT
Omam seems like it was nothing but a walk in the park for Matt Wink

Ian Butler
Dippofix - I know what you mean Wink Thanks for your input!

VoetsT - Seems like it Grin He didn't waste away his winter!

Omloop Het Nieuwsblad
i67.photobucket.com/albums/h320/MatthiasVleminckx/omloop01_zps7e1427cf.jpg

My first race in Europe for Omega Pharma - Quickstep and my first race on Belgian soil in the World Champion jersey. This is a terrain where I can shine!

The Omloop is always an unpredictable race. We've got the strongest team here, so we'll have to make the race.

For me, it's too bad it won't be raining.

After a shocking decision to leave the field, this is Niels Albert's first full road season. He's keen to show his value!

i67.photobucket.com/albums/h320/MatthiasVleminckx/omloop03_zpsd77b03ce.jpg

But having someone in the breakaway wasn't enough today. It was obvious we had to carry the race. 70 kilometers from the finish, we decided to make the race a bit harder.

i67.photobucket.com/albums/h320/MatthiasVleminckx/omloop04_zps2aead888.jpg

Our plan worked perfectly. The team did an amazing job and we ripped the peloton apart.

i67.photobucket.com/albums/h320/MatthiasVleminckx/omloop05_zpsbc0544ed.jpg

And then, Stuyven was the perfect launching platform. He attacked, I followed!

i67.photobucket.com/albums/h320/MatthiasVleminckx/omloop06_zpsbe199d9b.jpg

Because of the wind, it was almost impossible to break away alone. That didn't stop Kenneth Vanbilsen from trying. He caught me at a bad moment.

i67.photobucket.com/albums/h320/MatthiasVleminckx/omloop07_zps2f283e18.jpg

I knew I couldn't wait around, so I went into the chase. The wind was killing me, but I couldn't give up.

i67.photobucket.com/albums/h320/MatthiasVleminckx/omloop08_zpsdecfca25.jpg

After a 5 kilometer chase, I finally caught him. We were both pretty tired and neither seemed keen on picking up the pace now.

i67.photobucket.com/albums/h320/MatthiasVleminckx/omloop09_zps4cbb8aa8.jpg

So three riders, including Stuyven were coming closer and they'd join us under the 10 kilometer mark.

i67.photobucket.com/albums/h320/MatthiasVleminckx/omloop10_zps526d232d.jpg

The squad have welcomed me into the team with open arms. They're prepared to work themselves to the bone for me. I'm very grateful for that. Stuyven guaranteed the pace and brought us to a sprint.

i67.photobucket.com/albums/h320/MatthiasVleminckx/omloop11_zps793d5d80.jpg

I started my sprint after the final corner!

i67.photobucket.com/albums/h320/MatthiasVleminckx/omloop12_zps57ffb1ce.jpg

Vanbilsen stayed close for a while there. He was the only one who could threaten me in this sprint.

i67.photobucket.com/albums/h320/MatthiasVleminckx/omloop13_zps4d6741b9.jpg

But in a sprint, I'm still more powerful! Yes!

i67.photobucket.com/albums/h320/MatthiasVleminckx/omloop14_zps6a5e6760.jpg

What an amazing victory in this jersey. I'm already looking forward to the cobbled season! Let's see if I can repeat my opening weekend from 2 years ago first, where I also took Kuurne - Bruxelles - Kuurne!

See you tomorrow,
Matthias

VoetsT
Niels Albert at OPQS, a bit strange to see that now due the news of last weeks Frown
But what a race from the team and Mathias, so strong Grin

Fantastic start to the season for Matt!

As far as the personal updates go, I agree with Dippofix that A Day in the Life was better in part because of the personal updates, but this story is still really good without them. It's like A Day in the Life showed more of your personal story writing side, and this story shows more of you cycling story writing side (if that makes sense) Smile

No no, don't miss personal details, but one or two personal sentences now and then hardly hur. There is a different focus on both stories. A Day In The Life was through and through a personal journey to winning le Tour, winning your love... losing it, stuff like that. Modern Times is an ambitious project of spanning a decade of a cyclist's life. Adding personal stuff to that, takes attention from what matters at the core.

Matthias is on Great form at the moment, long may it continue Smile

Ian Butler
VoetsT - Yeah. So sad news irl. I thought about getting him out of this database but I decided against it and give him a career here Smile

Martial1 - Thanks a lot! It does make sense and actually after A Day I wanted to focus a bit more on the cycling side! So mission successful Pfft

Shonak - You're exactly right Smile And I think it's not unrealistic. Very few people lead lives so dramatic as Henry did in A Day Pfft I guess Matt's life is just that of a regular guy. Except his total ownage in cycling Grin

sutty68 - Hear ye, hear ye Wink Thanks!

Thanks for the support, guys. I really appreciate it.
