Preview:
This is the fourth edition of the GP De Quebec. It is 201km long. The race is a real puncheurs race which takes to a 13km circuit. which 3 tough climbs each lap. The favourites include Portuguese rider Rui Costa who will be looking to improve on 3rd place last year, Vincezo Nibali is representing Italy and the Shark could use his attacking punch to escape the bunch. Thabo Jango Sithembile, won't be let done by a strong squad and Peter Sagan will hope to reach the finish in a bunch, to unleash his sprint. Philippe Gilbert is hot off his Wallonie win and the world champion will be looking to add this Canadian race to his palmares. Ryder Hesjedahl is the home favourite, who could bring it home for his fans and Christian Schroder is Europcar's favourite, who will gain strong support from Thomas Voeckler, those two will be a force too be reckoned with. Van Garderen will support Gilbert but the oppourtunity may present itself and the same can be said for Sergio Henao and Richie Porte but they may get away. Enrico Gasparotto will also have some freedom in his support for Nibali, A break doesn't look too likely today, as the course will really tire any early attackers, but of course it isn't out of the question. This is really anyone's race.
The Race:
The peloton is ready to start the fourth GP De Quebec. Peter Sagan is already at the front.
Luca Mezgec (Argos) starts the attacks, his move for Argos is followed by an Leijen (Lotto), Houle (Ag2r), Bozzana (UHC) and Sabatini (Cannondale). It's good that Houle is out in front of his home crows. Hopefully the break will stick.
'
Just 1km after the original attack, Valencia (Colombia) and Pettacjo (Omega Pharma), attack past the other break, Al Mohney (Lampre), Ludvinsson (Argos), Coquard (Europcar), Domont (Ag2r) and Tanner (Belkin) follow the attack.
Stromberg (Garmin) attacks while most of the breakaway are caught, he join Pettachi and Valencia.
Ludvingson (Argos) tries to join the leaders again, Coquard (Europcar), Tanner (Belkin), Lindeman (Vaconsoleil and Mccarthy (Tinkoff-Sazo) follow. Houle (Ag2r) Chases.
Note: Sorry about the interface.
The peloton finish the first lap, a 9 rider break is up the road, consisting of the riders who attacked earlier, we believe the names are; Velencia (Colombia), Stromberg (Garmin), Lindeman (Vaconsoleil), Houle (Ag2r), Tanner (Belkin), Mccarthy (Saxobank), Pettachi (Omega-Pharma), Ludvingsson (Argos) and Coquard (Europcar). Interestingly, we have two Swedish riders in the break today. Dowsett (Movistar) attacks the peloton in an attempt to join the break De Marr (UHC) and Le Bon (FDJ) follow.
Velencia attacks his companions, Stromberg follows. Dowsett has given up.
The breakaway regroups, but Valencia attacks again with no hesitation, he knows that the peloton won't let a group this size stay away.
Cannondale shuts down the break, hopefully the next one will stay away, 170km to go.
Gretcsh (Argos) attacks, Chainel (Ag2r), Tjallingii (Belkin) and Debusschere (Lotto), Vansummeren (Garmin) chases.
With 150km to go we get a stable breakaway, they have a 3 minute lead on the pack, it contains; Debusschere (Lotto), Chainel (Ag2r), Gretsch (Argos), Vansummeren (Garmin) and Tajllingii (Belkin).
With 100km to go the break's lead peaks at 6 minutes and 19 seconds, it doesn't look good for them today. The gap is declining.
As they hit 3 laps to go, the break have a 2 minute 10 second lead, 38km left. The race will get serious now.
ATTACK FROM SAGAN!!!! 2 laps to go and the favourites have started attacking. There is 25km left for the break, who have 1 minute on the peloton, Sagan is half-way in-between the two groups.
Schroeder (Europcar) attacks to catch Sagan and the break, his teammate Voeckler is right on his wheel, Nibali (Astana), Gilbert (BMC), Costa (Movistar) and Vanendert (Lotto) follow.
Tjallingii attacks the breakaway. The current situation is;
Tjallingii-9 seconds- Gretsch, Debusschere, Vansummeren, Chainel- 34 seconds- Sagan,- 24 seconds- Nibali, Schroeder, Voeckler, Gilbert, Costa and Vanendert- 2 seconds, Peloton.
As Sky brings the Gilbert group back, Nibali attacks, followed by Schroeder to stay away.
Sagan catches the break at the front, while Nibali is catching in the background. The break almost can't hold onto Sagan's wheel he is descending so fast, but they manage to jump on.
15km to go! and Tjallingii looks to have cracked. Nibali is just 5 seconds down.
Nibali catches the front group while Tjallingii somehow keeps going, almost getting back on but the peloton are so close behind, they are about a minute down 13.5km to go.
COSTA GOES!!!!! Gilbert and Gasperato (Astana) follow.
Costa and Gilbert are almost up to the Nibali-Sagan group, but it may be a waste as the peloton are just behind, Shroeder attacks, followed by Vanendert, Stybar, Voeckler and Sithembile. Gaspartotto can't hold onto the Gilbert and Costa and Brouwer waits near the front of the peloton, sensing a sprint finish. 13km to go, 1 lap!
Verboven (Eusktel), Iglinsky (Astana), Hesjedahl (Garmin) and Henao (Sky) make the front group, which is now 19 riders, 10 seconds to the peloton but only Belkin are chasing.
The break consists of: Nibali, Sagan, Debusschere, Chainel, Gretsch, Vansummeren, Tjallingii, Stybar, Schroeder, Vanendert, Stybar, Gilbert, Costa, Sithembile, Henao, Verboven, Iglinsky, Hesjedahl and Voeckler
Sithembile Attacks!!! Costa, Sagan, Nibali, Gilbert and Voeckler follow.
Belkin are desperately chasing, they know Tjallingii won't win and they are 30 seconds down on the front of the break, Brouwer looks strong.
7km to go, the break is back together at the front.
Bilbao hits the ground, with 5km to go, his race is over.
It's all back together with 3.5km to go! It's anyone's game now!
It's now or never! Nibali goes now! Costa, Sagan, Hesjedahl, Sithembile, Schroeder, Gilbert and Voeckler follow. 2.5km left.
Stybar, Vanendert and Henao catch the second group, Nibali can be seen up the road. 10 seconds behind is Verboven, who leads the peloton, followed by the Belkin train.
Nibali goes under the flamme rouge. 1km to go but Gilbert is coming fast, with home favourite Hesjedahl on his wheel, Sagan sits next to Hesjedahl, followed by Sithembile, Schroeder, Costa, Stybar, Voeckler, Vanendert and Henao. The peloton is 40 seconds back, so it looks like Belkin's effort has been waster.
Nibali is still ahead but Gilbert is coming round. Sagan is beginning to power forward, but is he too late?!
Gilbert overtakes Nibal but Sagan and Hesjedahl are coming fast, it's going to be close.
THEY HIT THE LINE!!!!! GILBERT LOOKS TO BE CENTIMETRES AHEAD OF SAGAN!!!!!!!! Hesjedahl overtakes Nibai, to podium in front of his home fans. Sithembile takes 5th.
Thomas Voeckler sprints to 6th, while Henao takes 7th. 19 seconds later Vanendert crosses the line for 8th, followed by Stybar in 9th. While Schroeder rounds out the top-10. For all his effort Costa misses out on the top-10 in 11th.
All of Belkin's effort is wasted with 12th, 13th and 14th, with Brouwer, Slagter and Nordhaug. Richie Porte is 15th.
Philippe Gilbert Wins The fourth GP De Quebec!
Sky takes the team classification due to Sithembile (5th), Henao (7th) and Porte (15th).
