I don't agree, Ian. Football is one beautiful sport once you learn to handle the defeat like a man. One does not simply do that over here.
I'm sorry but that has nothing to with what I mean
I'm just saying that footballers are role models to kids and they do not set a good example.
Look what goes on down at the pitch. This is really a sport where it's a tactic to try to get a reaction from your opponent, to provoke him. It's also a sport where honesty is not promoted.
Added to that is the fact that a lot of these footballers get on the news in negative ways: they were caught speeding 40 mph over the speeding limit, they drove into some gas station...
I'm not saying it's not a beautiful sport. I'm just saying the sport needs some changes. Because our kids look up to these guys and frankly, that's scary.
If we are talking about role models, then the PARENTS have to change first.
Polluting the environment, consuming alcohol, smoking, being part of the monkey business, just name it.

Again, I'm not talking about that.
I agree completely with you, but that has nothing to do with my argument.
That's like if I would say: cigarettes are bad and you'd say: heroine is much worse.
But yeah, there are some questionable parents out there, that's a fact.
I thought Paulo Bento was braindead by not starting William Carvalho yesterday but today Wilmots topped it by starting Chadli ahead of Mertens and Mirallas.

You are right about the referee, but the same can be said about the German and Portuguese players. All 25 persons on the field have an influence on the game, if not, something would be wrong.
The trick for the players is to influence it to their own benefit and to prevent the referee to do the opposite.
Absolutely agreed, but isn't it alright to comment on that afterwards? I think the portuguese GK's performance was disgraceful, I think Muller's was both theatrical and extremely effective. He really took every chance he got and is deservedly the best scorer of the WC so far. I also think the ref was utter shite. I like to comment on these things and let people know why I think this way, as I read what others think of it as well. Constructive review of the gameplay is part of what fascinates me about this sport.
I'm sorry if my comments may have seemed a bit arrogant, but in hindsight you'll find that they were all based on arguments and facts trying to prove a point.
@admir: I'm going to bury my sword now, as I understand that my remarks are probably upsetting you and others, which isn't really my point. Let's just agree to disagree. And I'm sorry if I twisted the meaning of your comments by dividing them. I don't think that was the case but, anyway, I did that to better address your statements.
Now let's see what this Belgium is worth. They've got high expectations on them, but they surely have the arguments for a great campaign.

probably influenced by the awesomeness of other eredivisie players the other day
Belgium has a nice team, and much more quality than Argelia. But like we've seen with Uruguai vs Costa Rica for example, if you don't give everything you've got, unexpected things happen.
Ahh. Algeria. I remember their fans being responsible for one of the highlights of an otherwise boring tournament 4 years ago. Edited by Wilier on 17-06-2014 17:34
