14th for Kessiakoff was far above what I expected btw. He keeps surprising me positively.

Surely Gilbert owes this victory to Nibbles for providing the perfect lead-out on the Cauberg?
No
Well argued. I'm not saying Gilbert would have won it without him but looking at the way it played out, Nibali stretched it enough to ensure that the four riders behind him were all Belgian, and then kept pushing even though there were no other Italians around.
If Nibali hadn't attacked and stretched the peloton out, someone else would. Easy as that. Belgium played it perfectly and probably a Belgian would have done the lead out for Gilbert.

USA should have brought Danny Pate, idiots. He seems to get overlooked every year. Its getting annoying.
He probably declined the invite though for some reason.
Oh well. I guess we'll never have an American world champion.
I'm really excited to see Gilbert racing in the rainbow jersey. I think he is the by far most deserving wearer.

Pate would have never won. He would have been a good worker, but since only 1 American survived the crash, it doesn't matter.
But on a non-joking note, Pate actually won about 4 hours ago.
RIP Exxon Duke, David Veilleux, Double Feature, and Monster Energy

Eddy and Stephen Roche have even won the Giro+Tour+Worlds in one season, aka The Triple Crown.
Off the top of my head, I can't come up with others with a Tour+Worlds, but I guess there are more.

Who said that EBH couldn't last for 260km?

I know he couldn't beat Gilbert, I was just saying he is a much better team mate then Bookwalter/Busche/Duggan/Euser/Howes/Talansky/Phinney(in a race like this).
But what did he win???? I thought his next race after the Vuelta was the Gran Piemonte?

He raced outside of the official competition and finished 3:50 hours before Gilbert.

He won the Worlds. They just restarted without him because they thought there wasn't enough action.

Speicher, Bobet and LeMond all won the Tour and the Worlds in the same year. Hinault, Coppi and Baldini won the Giro and the Worlds. So yeah, there has been quite a few riders who has pulled it off. |

Yep, and then they all dropped back as Gilbert went, giving him a nice advantage over everyone else.

Gilbert was already in his right gear, while others still had to change gears, great job. |

Yeah, that was very cool. Sure, Gilbert's kick is enough to open a decent gap by himself, but starting with a 4 bike lengths advantage so no one can wheelsuck him was perfect.

It was a very nice race to watch. Biggest surprises for me were Degenkolb and Navardauskas while I was a bit disappointed by Sagan and Gerrans. I mean, Clarke worked quite a lot, so I expected a bit more.

Purito was a major disappointment in my eyes. Didn't do any work for Valverde or whoever their contemplated captain was, and still finished behind Contador, who attacked hard several times and then paced the group a lot on the final lap.

265 km and the race is decided on 200-300 metres... Amusing as always.
BTW - fantastic lead out by Nibali |
