13.03.2011: Paris - Nice
Stage 6
Aix en Provence - Toulon: 155.0km
Tactics meeting
Fabian Cancellara moved himself back into overall contention in yesterday's time trial. Today's uphill finish on Mont Faron will be a big test for the Swiss powerhouse. Can he climb? Armstrong and Valverde are lurking only seconds behind the yellow jersey, and will be ready to strike. For us, this is probably the best chance to distance Valverde, who is likely to grab bonus seconds on the remaining stages.
On their way down towards the foot of Mont Faron, the break of the day consisting of Wegelius (Lotto), Buffaz (Cofidis) and Arekeev (Katusha) were 2'30 ahead of the peloton. A good chance to stay away until the top of the climb!
But it didn't go their way. A select group with Discovery riders Armstrong and Popovych plus Joly and David Lopez reached the escapees 3.5km from the top. Valverde was missing! Could Armstrong lay the foundation for the overall win here?
Unfortunately Valverde clawed his way back. But he was probably hurting, as he hadn't been able to follow the favourites in the beginning. There was no sign of Cancellara's yellow jersey.
1.5km from the finish line, the lead group was made up by seven riders. Arekeev from the breakaway was still hanging in there. Impressive.
Around the final bend, Valverde suddenly moved to the front and put on the pressure! Where did he get the strength from? Popo was struggling at the back of the group.
Armstrong was able to follow Valverde's burst of speed! He had to get around the Spaniard if he was to take the yellow jersey. Get your legs moving old man!
Of course not. Who can beat Valverde in a sprint? The bonifications put Valverde one stupid second ahead of Armstrong in the GC. Where on earth are we going to get that back again?

Too bad that Valverde passed you with just one second in the GC. Anyway, a great P-N for Discovery. |

14.03.2011: Paris - Nice
Stage 7
Toulon - Cannes: 196.0km
Tactics meeting
So far Valverde and Cancellara have won three stages each, so betting on one of them for the stage win today wouldn't give high odds. Stage 7 is a quite lumpy affair, likely to favour a climbing sprinter (read: Valverde). The last hill is probably too far from the line to make any real difference.
The remains of the peloton were heading for a bunch sprint when Andy Schleck put in a cheeky attack under the 5 km banner.
The sprinters were shaping up behind him in the home straight, but he held a considerable lead under the red kite!
Schleck was completely dead during the last meters though, so Alessandro Ballan could catch and pass him in the very last moments! It's a good early season for Ballan, who also won a stage in California. Finally someone breaks Cancellara's and Valverde's stage win domination. Tomorrow sees the end of Paris-Nice, as the riders embark upon the queen stage: Three pretty serious mountains.

15.03.2011: Paris - Nice
Stage 8 [Last stage]
Nice - Nice: 131.0km
Tactics meeting
This year the Col d'Eze returns as the final climb of Paris - Nice. The last stage is regarded as the queen stage, but any attacker would need a serious gap over the Col d'Eze to take any time out of the other favourites. If we can distance Valverde or gain more bonus seconds than him, the victory belongs to Armstrong. But it will be tough.
Sébastien Joly (3rd overall) attacked on the Col d'Eze! The Frenchman was only 27 seconds behind leader Valverde, and was hoping to steal the overall win.
No panic in the Discovery camp. Di Gregorio and Pardilla paced Armstrong nicely up the mountain, and kept Joly under relative control. We were biding our time for the right moment to make our move.
Valverde didn't bother to wait anymore. 2 km from the mountain top, he stretched his legs and escaped from the peloton. He obviously thought Joly was getting dangerous out in front.
Mollema, Popo and Armstrong reacted to Valverde's accelration! Popo has shown good form the last few days.
Mollema cracked, but Lopez and Feillu got up to Valverde together with our Discovery duo.
Lopez had overextended himself when he brigded the gap, and was soon left behind by the leaders.
Following some hazardous descending from Valverde, lone attacker Joly was reeled in. The leading group now consisted of five riders who had a healthy gap back to the rest of the race.
Popovych was leading out the others under the red kite. Armstrong sat on Valverde's wheel. He had to pass the Spaniard if we wanted the overall win! Go old man, you can do it!
Well, I never really believed Armstrong could outsprint Valverde, who wins his fourth stage in this race. The Caisse rider raised his shoulders as if to say "That was easy".
The best one-week stage racer in the world celebrates another triumph. This is his 2nd Paris - Nice win in his career, with the previous coming in 2009.

The unbeatable Spaniard has done it again. Congratulations to Valverde for his second Paris - Nice crown. He won four stages and would have won it in style if it wasn't for the time trial. Lance Armstrong was so close, and we see this race as a success even though we wanted to win it. Popovych found some serious form towards the end of the race, and finished 5th overall.
One important incident happened on the last stage which the cameras didn't catch: Denis Menchov and Fabian Cancellara crashed and injured themselves. Menchov will be out until June, but more importantly, Cancellara is injured until the end of April, which means he misses the cobbled classics. A big blow for Liquigas.
Over in Italy, the Tirreno Adriatico has started, so we'll check on Ciolek & co next. The first monument of the season is also coming up in a week or so: the Milan Sanremo classic. Stay tuned! |

Well both Armstrong and Popo did very great and there is no shame in losing to a guy like Valverde. I hope Ciolek will be able to win Milano - San Remo, although it wouldn't surprise me if Cancellara takes a win (if he is going to be in the race that is).
