@ Sutty - Thanks, he is
@ Freitas - Great to have one of my former regulars comment here Thanks a lot!
@ the hoyle - Yeah, I wish I won LBL, I thought Mas would hold on, but I think I judged it wrong and then Ala nearly beat Valv in the sprint.

Alaphilippe was also dominant taking 2 stage wins on the hilly stages, and Mas dominated the day in the mountains. Mas will be looking to keep his form ,heading into the Giro!

The big 3 podium favourites will be Roglic, Porte and Bernal, but Mas, Landa, Kelderman and Oomen will challenge as well. Uran, Izagirre, Formolo, Aru, Ramiro Sosa and Zakarin will be fighting alongside them on the mountain stages too. They would be considered outsiders though, and winning the Giro would be a big ask for them.
There are many top sprinters here as well. Caleb Ewan, Elia Viviani, Fernando Gaviria, Sam Bennett and Fabio Jakobsen are all very strong sprinters, so the winner of the sprinters jersey could end up being a tough battle.
The first week will be relatively easy for the GC riders, but tough on the sprinters. 4 rolling stages in a row could be the perfect recipe for breakaways, but it ends off with a summit of the Monte Terminillo.
The second week will see more chances for the sprinters with 4 opportunities, as the second major obstacle for the GC combatants with a finishing climb to the Monte Zoncolan and the third being the Alpe di Pampeago
The third week has two ITTs and two mountain top finishes, finishing on the climb to Chianale and then Cascata del Toce respectively. Roglic has to be the big favourite, with a great team behind him, and having the advantage in the TTs, over all the other riders.

Romandie
I'm not too deep into real cycling these days (well, except of following my favorite riders.. you know them, probably), but the Giro startlist comes rather weak, right? Porte, Roglic as the big favorites. Or do I miss something? Anyway, a few options for you to do something notable. Good luck!

@ Tamijo - Yeah, I think a lot of guys were still in great form from the Ardennes! Thanks
@ tsmoha - It is indeed a weak startlist. Im not sure if its because the Giro startdate is the 11th of May instead of the 4th, I've heard changing the startdate of races can alter the AI race programs. It might be something I have to fix for next season. That being said, Roglic and Porte are both still quite strong. In my save they in the Top 6 GC riders, of Froome, Thomas, Dumoulin, Porte, Roglic and Bardet
@ sutty - Indeed! The main goal is to win stages with Viviani, but Mas could sneak onto the podium as well.

Giro d'Italia 2019 Week One
Stage 1
Echelons dominated the opening stage.
With 15km to go, Deceuninck made the decisive move which left a lead group of 26 riders to battle it out for the opening stage. Major riders who made the split were Mas, Gaviria, Ewan, Porte, Roglic and Formolo. Essentially all other major GC riders would end up losing 1 minute to this group as the day ended.
1 | Caleb Ewan | Lotto - Soudal | +00:00 | 2 | Elia Viviani | Deceuninck - Quick Step | +00:00 | 3 | Sam Bennett | BORA - hansgrohe | +00:00 | 4 | Fabio Jakobsen | Deceuninck - Quick Step | +00:00 | 5 | Fernando Gaviria | UAE - Team Emirates | +00:00 |
Stage 2
1 | Caleb Ewan | Lotto - Soudal | +00:00 | 2 | Fernando Gaviria | UAE - Team Emirates | +00:00 | 3 | Philippe Gilbert | Deceuninck - Quick Step | +00:00 | 4 | Elia Viviani | Deceuninck - Quick Step | +00:00 | 5 | Davide Formolo | BORA - hansgrohe | +00:00 |
Stage 3
Another day with a small front group
The third stage again saw a small group go clear. Again the Big 4 GC riders now, Mas, Porte, Roglic and Formolo were in the group, but riders like Landa and Kelderman were losing big time again. Ewan the GC leader was also missing from the front group, meaning Viviani would move into the Maglia Rosa
1 | Roman Kreuziger | Team Dimension Data | +00:00 | 2 | Elia Viviani | Deceuninck - Quick Step | +00:00 | 3 | Jakob Fuglsang | Astana Pro Team | +00:00 | 4 | Sonny Colbrelli | Team Bahrain Merida | +00:00 | 5 | Domenico Pozzovivo | Team Bahrain Merida | +00:00 |
Stage 4
Start of stage 4 and Deceuninck have Viviani in Pink, Mas in white and Stybar in Blue.
Perhaps Viviani will only stay in pink for the day though? If he does lose it, he would likely just move back into the points jersey. Only 9 riders are still within a minute of Viviani's lead though, so it he's got a good chance of keeping it until Stage 7.
1 | Caleb Ewan | Lotto - Soudal | +00:00 | 2 | Fernando Gaviria | UAE - Team Emirates | +00:00 | 3 | Elia Viviani | Deceuninck - Quick Step | +00:00 | 4 | Tim Wellens | Lotto - Soudal | +00:00 | 5 | Jakob Fuglsang | Astana Pro Team | +00:00 |
Stage 5
1 | Sam Bennett | BORA - hansgrohe | +00:00 | 2 | Zdenek Stybar | Deceuninck - Quick Step | +00:00 | 3 | Davide Formolo | BORA - hansgrohe | +00:00 | 4 | Elia Viviani | Deceuninck - Quick Step | +00:00 | 5 | Enric Mas | Deceuninck - Quick Step | +00:00 |
Stage 6
1 | Caleb Ewan | Lotto - Soudal | +00:00 | 2 | Elia Viviani | Deceuninck - Quick Step | +00:00 | 3 | Fernando Gaviria | UAE - Team Emirates | +00:00 | 4 | Sam Bennett | BORA - hansgrohe | +00:00 | 5 | Sonny Colbrelli | Team Bahrain Merida | +00:00 |
Stage 7
Mas will be trading in his white jersey for Pink
1 | Enric Mas | Deceuninck - Quick Step | +00:00 | 2 | Jakob Fuglsang | Astana Pro Team | +00:50 | 3 | Rigoberto Uran | EF Education First Pro Cycling Team | +01:01 | 4 | Domenico Pozzovivo | Team Bahrain Merida | +01:01 | 5 | Roman Kreuziger | Team Dimension Data | +01:01 | 6 | Wilco Kelderman | Team Sunweb | +01:01 | 7 | Davide Formolo | BORA - hansgrohe | +01:54 | 8 | Mikel Landa | Movistar Team | +01:54 | 9 | Richie Porte | Trek - Segafredo | +02:28 | 10 | Egan Bernal | Team Sky | +02:57 | 11 | Ilnur Zakarin | Team Katusha - Alpecin | +03:14 | 12 | Tim Wellens | Lotto - Soudal | +03:14 | 13 | Tony Gallopin | AG2R La Mondiale | +03:14 | 14 | Primoz Roglic | Team Jumbo - Visma | +03:32 | 15 | Sam Oomen | Team Sunweb | +03:55 |

Rest Day Summary
The first stage was definitely an exciting opening to the race. Many riders lost all hope of a GC win already. The three favourites remained at the front though, and all cancelled each other out. The next stage was a typical sprinters day.
Stage 3 saw riders drop even more time, and also let Viviani move into the Pink and take a lead in the points, while Stybar took the KOM. Stage 4 and 5 were settled by the sprinters again, with Ewan showing he is in the best for of his life atm. Viviani does enough to keep his points jersey lead though after another sprinters day on stage 6.
Stage 7 was were it was all expected to go down for the first time, and after getting to the final climb of the day in the leading group of 52, Viviani cracked and knew he would be losing his GC lead at the end of the day.
No one really did anything until 7km to the finish, when Pozzovivo attacked and got a gap of 35 seconds. With 4km to go, Formolo finally put on the chase, with about 8 riders following, but surprisingly enough, Roglic and Porte both cracked. Mas managed to bridge to Pozzovivo with Fuglsang who started to look really bad, and he never looked back, taking a great solo win.
Mas now looks like he has a great lead in the race, with Kreuiger not a massive threat, Uran is his nearest challenger at 1:07 down.

Sick first week. Podium'd almost every stage and Mas caps it off by dominating the first mountain stage! The weak startlist already pays off still two to go, but this first week looks like you can go for a big Giro.

Dominating win there, wow. It's one thing to win the stage, and quite another to do it by almost a full minute on second place and several minutes on favorites.

@ tsmoha - Yeah, Viviani and Mas were really strong in the first week. I wasn't expecting Roglic and Porte to be so bad on the mountain stage though, but Mas had a +4 day.
@ bball - Yeah, the truth is I really didn't even have to do anything. Mas just followed moves and then in the last km he just opened up that huge gap.
@ Voets - Thanks, indeed he was!
@ Tamijo - Yeah, I think Mas may get his first GT win a little sooner than later Yeah, Fuglsang seems like the strongest threat so far! Perhaps he will get on the podium too.
@ sutty - Thanks, but I think youll find Mas did win a stage

Massive start for Mas - holding on to that advantage will be a challenge but looks good nevertheless. |

@ sutty - Its ok
Giro d'Italia 2019 Week Two
Stage 8
1 | Elia Viviani | Deceuninck - Quick Step | +00:00 | 2 | Caleb Ewan | Lotto - Soudal | +00:00 | 3 | Fabio Jakobsen | Deceuninck - Quick Step | +00:00 | 4 | Sonny Colbrelli | Team Bahrain Merida | +00:00 | 5 | Enric Mas | Deceuninck - Quick Step | +00:00 |
Only 18 riders finished in the lead group today, the rest all finished 47 seconds back. Ewan was the only real sprint threat to Viviani and absolutely no GC challengers other than Mas made the split, so he extends his lead by almost a minute on a flat day!

Rest Day Summary
3 more or less non GC days in a row to start the week gave the climbers some nice rest heading into Stage 12. Mas' and his team look ultra strong atm, as they've now gained extra time on rivals on 3 different flat stages, resulting in over 3 minutes of gains overall.
Stage 12 was tough, as losing Gilbert will hurt Viviani's leadout in the flat stages to come, but Gilbert was also destined to have some free days where he could go in the breakaway. Uran dropping out of the race moved Fuglsang into 2nd (after Kreuziger lost time on stage 12), and becomes the closest rival to Mas still 2 minutes down. The next closest is 5 minutes down, so these two have been riding fantastically so far! Viviani finally has a stage win at the Giro, and now looks like he is on pace to take the most stage wins in this years edition. Its really a two horse race for the sprinters between him and Ewan, after Gaviria abandoned due to injury.
Stage 14 was another day in the mountains and after 2 falls, Mas had to chaseback on to the leaders group of 15 on the descent heading into the Alpe di Pampeago, after crashing twice, once before the first climb of the day and again on the first descent. He was chasing the leaders for the first 3 climbs of the day, so to be the strongest on the favourites on the finale was a great showing!
With now 2 more MTN stages to go, Mas looks good for the podium, but the lead is not safe yet!

Wow, Mas is amazing What a ride so far! Viviani and the leadout also bossing things in week two after a lot of near misses.
Shame to see Bennett slip down the GC but the KoM lead and a stage win is awesome
