Giro d'Italia - Race Preview - GT

i.imgur.com/MzUgqDd.png

Hello everybody!

Excitement is reaching fever pitch here in Sardinia, with the 100th edition of the Giro d'Italia starting in less than 24 hours! For those of you a little out of the loop, I thought I'd give you all my own mini preview of the race. I'll go over the three weeks of racing, all the riders to look out for, as well as our squad and what my role will be in the team.

2017 Route

i.imgur.com/Z38d182.jpg

The first week of this year's Giro is, as usual, quite simple when compared to the rest of the race. Many stages for the sprinters, and some great early chances for the fast men to grab those elusive stage wins. However while the sprinters will be the focus during the first week, following an early rest day, stage 4 is an early test for the GC contenders, finishing on the famous Mount Etna. Those hoping to figure in the overall standings will need to be ready to ride early on in this one.

i.imgur.com/zQXxxyj.jpg

The second week is where the GC will begin to truly take shape. As we ride further north through Italy, the climbs get tougher and the stakes get higher. Stage 9 is the first brutal climb of the Giro, with the stage cresting the Blockhaus, whose final 10kms average out around 9%. Tough stuff. We get another rest day after this, and then head straight back to it, with a 39km hilly time-trial through Umbria.

Some hilly stages (possible chances for a breakaway) precede stage 13, which will be the final chance for the sprinters to come to the fore. With a week of climbing and time-trialling coming after, it may be the day we say goodbye to many of the sprinters, including Caleb Ewan, who will need the rest with some big races on his calendar upcoming. I however am intent on lasting the full 3 weeks, but whether I get there is a different question.

Ending the 2nd week of the race is a stage similar to the one up to the Blockhaus, a short stage finishing on another famous climb, this time the Santuario di Oropa. Another key day, and the opening of what will be a brutal 8 days of racing.

i.imgur.com/zfa9Jw4.jpg

After what will surely be a day for the breakaway on stage 15, 5 days of climbing await the peloton. Stage 16 will be epic, with two summits of the Passo dello Stelvio. 4 more challenging days follow, finishing a week of racing that I'm not looking forward to at all. Everyday is a possibility of winning or losing the maglia rosa, and it will be very entertaining for those watching at home.

Then for one last test, the race will finish with an old-school 30km flat time-trial frpm Monza to Milan. It could be a lap of honour for an already safe race leader, or a day of desperation, with a pure climber desperately attempting to hold onto the lead. We'll have to wait and see, but no matter what, it will be an exciting end to what will hopefully be a terrific 100th Giro d'Italia.

The big pre-race favourite for the 100th Giro is Italian hero and defending champion Vincenzo Nibali. His name stands out as the only former Giro winner in the field, and with a strong mountain lieutenant in Ion Izagirre, he will be hard to dethrone in the mountains. A rider of similar ilk to Nibali is Thibaut Pinot, who is regarded as one of the worlds best climbers, as well as a very talented time-triallist. However he has yet to produce any results up to his standards so far this season, so we will have to wait and see if he has got what it takes.

After finishing on the podium at his home race in 2014 & 15, Fabio Aru will be looking to go one better and finish atop the podium, putting enough time over his rivals to hold them off in the final time-trial. On the other end of the spectrum is SunWeb's Tom Dumoulin. The exciting young Dutchman is one of the world's premier time-triallist's, and with just under 70kms of racing against the clock, he could make a serious difference over his rivals in that discipline. No slouch on the mountains either, Dumoulin is a very big chance of claiming his first Grand Tour victory.

As for the rest of the field, our own Esteban Chaves leads the rest of the contenders, all with a real possibility of wearing the maglia rosa into Milano. For Esteban the time will need to be gained in the mountains, as although he is a good time-triallist, he will likely lose time to the likes of Dumoulin, Nibali & Pinot. He came so close last year, but with his tremendous form leading up to this race, we're feeling very confident in his abilities to cause a big upset and grab what we think will be the first of many GTs in his career.

Over the first two weeks of the race, the fast men will do battle on the flatter stages, fighting for those priceless stage victories. It's looking like a two-horse race, with two sensations ready to fight it out for supremacy as the best young sprinter in the world. Fernando Gaviria has had an excellent year thus far, culminating with victory at Milano - San Remo. He has developed incredibly in the last year, and is hot on the heels of teammate Marcel Kittel as the fastest man in the world. However his big competition will be from of course, our man Caleb Ewan. We've come here with the intention of stage wins, and Caleb is in top top top form. We're 100% committed to working for Caleb when we need to, and with myself, Roger Kluge & Mitch Docker working his lead out train, we are confident.

It's not just about those two however, with Dylan Groenewegen another fresh face on the scene looking to make his mark and earn his first GT stage win. And of course there is a flurry of local talent, young and old, hoping to perform at their home race and steal a win in front of an adoring crowd.

This is the team we've decided to bring to the Giro this year. Led of course by Esteban & Caleb, both have their respective domestiques. The DS decided not to bring all of our climbing firepower, giving Esteban just the one mountain helper instead, in the form of Roman Kreuziger. The true definition of a super-domestique, Roman is a tremendous climber, and we expect him to be next to Esteban throughout most of the high mountains, as one of the last teammates left in the front group. As for Caleb, he's got as I said earlier, myself, Mitch Docker & Roger Kluge making up his leadout train. Sam Bewley & Michael Hepburn are here as pure domestiques, grabbing water bottles & food, communicating with the DS, and sacrificing themselves if ever need be.

Our one true free rider for the entire tour will be Simon Gerrans. He's won stages here before, and at the other Grand Tours, so he's a proven opportunist at this level. Expect to see him in a lot of breakaways, as well as his signature punchy attacks and fast finishes uphill.

Into the third week, we expect Caleb & Roger to abandon the race, and myself, Sam, Mitch & Michael will transform from domestiques into part-time free riders, joining Simon in the hunt for breakaways and rogue stage wins, getting lots of TV time for the sponsors. I'm excited for that part of the race, and we've circled a couple stages in particular as days where I'll be let off the leash, on the hunt for individual glory.

And there we have it! Everything you need to know about the Giro d'Italia. I need some sleep now, but I doubt I'll be able to, I'm too excited! I can't wait for the depart tomorrow morning, I'll see you there!

Until then,
Alex

Giro d'Italia - Stage 1 - GT

i.imgur.com/kOgEToP.jpg

Alghero - Olbia 204.3kms

We're finally here, ready to race for the 100th Giro d'Italia. The first stage is flat, the first chance for the sprinters, with today's winner taking the first maglia rosa of the race. It's classified as a flat stage, and will most likely end in a bunch sprint, but with a few short climbs, including one 20kms before the finish line, a succesful opportunist could steal the win. A win in a mass sprint for Caleb is the priority, but if he has to Esteban will be ready to respond to any attacks.

Race Report

The first breakaway of this year's Giro was just 1-rider, Movistar's Jorge Arcas. His lead never grew very high, and the Spaniard simply enjoyed the landscape and fanfare, all the while earning the team, which didn't bring any of their big heavy-hitters, some prime TV time.

i.imgur.com/2Na0scc.jpg
Movistar strike gold with over 150kms of solo TV-time

After 100kms of smooth riding, a huge crash! A technical corner turned ugly, and 5 riders turned to 10, 10 to 20, and eventually more than half the peloton is on the ground. We came out nearly unscathed, except Chaves was down! Lucky for us, he got up quickly, and was surrounded by countless other big favourites (Nibali, Aru, Dumoulin, Zakarin, Pinot, Henao), so those left up front slowed dramatically and soon we were all together again.

i.imgur.com/cBqiRsD.jpg
A terrible crash mars what was supposed to be a quiet day for the GC favourites

With Arcas now caught and the peloton back as one, we reach the first intermediate sprint. With stage wins higher on our priorites than the points jersey, we kept Caleb safe in the pack and passed on participating in the sprint. Those who did go for it were Danny Van Poppel (Sky) & Dylan Groenewegen (LottoNL), with the Sky man taking the max points.

i.imgur.com/t3MqHPU.jpg
Another contender in the sprints?

And as the peloton came closer to the final climb, it was becoming clear that several riders would not be able to recover from the crash. 6 riders have officially abandoned, the biggest name being Andrey Amador. He was here as Movistar's leader, so very dissapointing for the Costa Rican. Joining him on the list of victims are domestiques Paolo Tiralongo (Astana), Laurens Ten Dam (Sunweb), Jan Bakelants (AG2R), Manuel Senni (BMC), Jakub Mareczko (Wilier Trestina) & Jesus Herrada (Movistar). We've lost some quality riders today, a real shame.

Also struggling at the back are Fabio Aru & Ilnur Zakarin, who are surrounded by teammates. The crash clearly is taking a toll and they'll hope to survive today without losing any time.

Soon we reached the final climb, with LottoNL-Jumbo at the front, leading us upwards. Esteban & Simon were sitting in a good position, waiting for an attack to respond to.

i.imgur.com/ayY9CM4.jpg
The final test before the sprint finish

And an attack! It's Steven Kruijswijk (TLJ) who goes first, with Christian Knees (SKY) & Bob Jungels (QST) following on his tail. 20kms left to go as they near the crest of the climb.

i.imgur.com/89VmQ7M.jpg
The first big attack of the Giro

And not wanting to lose any early time, Esteban Chaves responds, shooting up the road after the attackers. The pace in the group lifts slightly, but we're all holding on near the front.

i.imgur.com/wySklw5.jpg
A glorious sight seeing the Colombian dance up the climb

And in an instant he catches the front-3, and they head dowbhill. It seemed that Kruijswijk's intention wasn't to steal the stage win, but simply to get the mountain points, so he refuses to work and it seems they're doomed to be brought back in.

i.imgur.com/vRy2AYV.jpg
A daring move but no dice

We head downhill, and as we catch Esteban & co, the sprint trains begin to form. I'm at the front, pushing a hard pace. LottoNL-Jumbo & Quick-Step are at the front too, but look slightly unorganised.

i.imgur.com/HLgE5YT.jpg
The trains take form

Quick-Step were in disarray, their train falling apart & Gaviria way behind! A terrible start to the Giro for them. We on the other hand were head to head with LottoNL, pushing hard to get in the perfect position. I am done for the day now, it's down to Mitch & Roger. Ewan & Groenewegen are directly next to each other with not long left now.

i.imgur.com/YBeaL2r.jpg
The sprinters prepare

And just as Mitch is done, Roger Kluge starts his lead out, and his chain jams! He loses lots of speed, and Caleb is forced to go it alone! Groenewegen gets a decent gap, it's not looking good.

And the Dutchman takes it! Caleb was hard on his wheel but the distance was too much to cover in just a few hundred metres. Dissapointment but nothing we could do there, just bad luck. Italians Colbrelli (TBM) & Nizzolo (TSF) take 3rd & 4th, with Gaviria coming in a disappointing 5th.

i.imgur.com/Hx2N64b.jpg
The first GT stage win for the Dutch champion

And the biggest shock of the day comes after the race is over! Over 2 minutes after the peloton, a dejected and bruised Ilnur Zakarin rolls over the finish line, surrounded by most of his team. Disaster! And even worse, another minute passes before we see Fabio Aru, the local hero looking in terrible shape after what was a horror crash. Whether he, or Zakarin, figure at all in this race is a big question mark, with the Russian losing 2'12", and Aru 3'10".

We got so close, another 2nd place. Frown But nothing we could do, simply just bad luck. We're focusing on the next sprint already. As for the crash, dissapointing to lose some riders already, and not the way that Esteban would've wanted to gain time on Aru & Zakarin, but we can't complain.

Tomorrow is already a tough stage, could see some more attacking action.

See you then,
Alex

Giro d'Italia - Stage 2 - GT

i.imgur.com/ToM7VQR.jpg

Olbia - Tortoli 202.4kms

Today's stage has a very up and down route, hardly a moment of flat road before the final 5kms. Anything could happen today; a breakaway could succeed, there could be a late attack from the peloton from a GC contender or a strong puncheur, or it could finish in a sprint. We could very likely have a new pink jersey holder at the end of the day.

Race Report

The peloton were happy to let a breakaway go, with 6 riders out in front. One of them was yesterday's most combative rider and KoM leader Jorge Arcas, looking to defend his jersey for one more day. We needed all our riders with us today so chose not to try and join.

i.imgur.com/srNUkVJ.jpg
6 riders out in front

Caleb Ewan was looking pretty in mauve today, wearing the points leaders jersey, in place of race leader Dylan Groenewegen. A very recognisable look, with Groenewegen in pink, Argas in blue, and Danny Van Poppel in white.

i.imgur.com/PxN9ru6.jpg
Caleb Ewan comfortable in the peloton

BMC's Floris Gerts took the 7 points over the top of the first proper climb of the day, just ahead of Lukas Pöstlberger (Bora - Hansgrohe). This put him in provisional KoM lead, with current leader Arcas struggling in the breakaway, clearly tired from 150kms of solo riding yesterday.

i.imgur.com/ueR5Ws3.jpg
Gerts & Pöstlberger crossing first through the town of Nuoro

And we've got another big crash in the peloton! Not as destructive as yesterday, but some big names are down, including the pink jersey, as well as Rigoberto Uran, Rohan Dennis and many more. They all get up off the ground and catch up eventually though, with no obvious damage. Some weren't so lucky however. Gregor Mühlberger (Bora - Hansgrohe) & Alberto Bettiol (Cannondale - Drapac) are forced to abandon. More riders lost in just 2 days of what should've been safe racing. Lucky for us we had no riders caught up in the fall.

i.imgur.com/2QkWZUw.jpg
Another crash takes out some unlucky riders in the peloton

With the peloton almost all back together, and the pink jersey back in the frame, the riders begin to head up the Passo Genna Silana. A long, 25km climb, however it averages out at only 3%, so we doubt it'll cause any serious damage. We must still work hard to make sure Caleb stays up front, and since I'm feeling good I'll be guiding him personally.

i.imgur.com/xpe8wwt.jpg
A long climb, but one of the easier ones the peloton will face this entire race.

Despite not being too steep, halfway up and the length of the climb was starting to take it's toll. The peloton was down to 85 or so riders, with more dropping off the back. We had lost 4 riders already (Kluge, Docker, Hepburn & Bewley), however all our big names were still sitting near the front. Caleb and I were getting very tired, but with not too long left we pushed hard to get over the top, knowing that nearly 40kms of descending, and time to recover, awaited us. The pink jersey was well behind us, but still holding onto the main group.

i.imgur.com/r7V1VFK.jpg
The Passo Genna Silana proving tougher than imagined

The first rider to crest the climb was Lukas Pöstlberger, who had dropped all fellow riders and was now riding solo, praying to hold onto his lead to the finish. With the peloton nearly at the top of the climb, we would get a time-check, with the last one coming in at just over a minute.

i.imgur.com/EPEPfKS.jpg
The Austrian was all alone

The peloton was now over the top, and Ewan, Groenewegen & Gaviria were all in the group, which was 79 strong with no major riders missing. However after a long day, would the sprinters still be strong enough to sprint? Or could a rider like Simon Gerrans or Fabio Felline steal it? Before they thought about the finish however, they'd have to catch Pöstlberger, who was 1'15" ahead, with 35 kms til the finish.

i.imgur.com/5FdQo4S.jpg
Over the top and straight back down

Under the 10km to go banner, and Pöstlberger still was leading. His lead was right on 30", and he was giving it everything he got. No matter what happens, it's a success today for him & Bora, getting lots of peak TV time.

i.imgur.com/xQNPppD.jpg
The Bora barouder daring to dream

As we finished the descent, and rode into the last 5kms, I began to hit the front, pushing the pace with Caleb on my wheel. It would be a long lead out but he and I were feeling good and I was confident I could get our man into the perfect position. Gaviria hops on Ewan's wheel, and the sprint would soon be on, with Pöstlberger in sight just up the road.

i.imgur.com/iUhAcgs.jpg
5kms left after a very long day

Pöstlberger is just overtaken as the finish line is now in sight! I'm up in front, as the other sprinters start to go behind me. Caleb is waiting patiently for the perfect time to pounce. We couldn't have done this better, now it's about execution!

i.imgur.com/ZM7Zg7t.jpg
Where is the pink jersey?

The sprint is on, it's Ewan in front, with Gaviria & Felline neck and neck to his right. And the maglia rosa is charging through the middle! Who would take it?

i.imgur.com/4PbK0CO.jpg
A true sprinters battle!

And as it comes down to the very last metre, Caleb Ewan just takes it! Gaviria is second by an inch, with Groenewegen finishing the podium. Now that feels good!

i.imgur.com/MViOCow.jpg
A perfect lead out and perfect execution

And on top of the win, from bonus seconds, Caleb Ewan takes the leader's jersey by 1 second!

Yes! What a day! Champagne will be flowing at dinner tonight after a perfect stage! The DS told me personally how happy he was with my ride, saying we couldn't have done it without me. Really feels great to help the team so much, especially on one of the biggest stages of all. We're ready to defend tomorrow, and execute just as we did today. Woo!

See you tomorrow!

Giro d'Italia - Stage 3 - GT

i.imgur.com/Is13dxg.jpg

Tortoli - Cagliari 146.8kms

Today is another chance for the sprinters, and a lot less effort than yesterday. We've got the pink, so that means it's our job to bring back the breakaway, and set up the peloton for the sprint. It's gonna be tough to stop Groenewegen & Gaviria, but we did it yesterday, so let's get out there and do it again.

Race Report

7 riders were part of today's breakaway, but with such a flat profile and limited chances for the sprinters, we didn't let them get far. With help from LottoNL - Jumbo, we held their lead to 3 minutes and as soon as we entered the last 50kms, we began to reel them back in.

i.imgur.com/2q1Yd6S.jpg
Mission accomplished: TV time

LottoNL seemed just as hellbent on catching the break as we did, with powerhouses Primož Roglič & Jos Van Emden pushing hard. We were happy to sit back and got in our sprint train formation. 20kms left and the breaks lead was under 90 seconds.

i.imgur.com/AjeboRG.jpg
The Orica train takes form early on

Down to 10kms now and I was now putting the hammer down. I started to see the riders up ahead and did everything I could to catch them as soon as possible. Gaviria was stuck in no-mans land, with no visible train. LottoNL on the other hand were looking comfortable, with Groenewegen right next to Ewan.

i.imgur.com/0FK5Vn3.jpg
The pink jersey looking comfortable

It was LottoNL & Orica, head to head. The former had some strong riders, and just as I emptied my tank, they began to inch slightly ahead of us. My job was done as I eased back into the group. The final sprint would soon start.

i.imgur.com/GuevPWN.jpg
LottoNL Jumbo vs. Orica - Scott

Lotto's lead out of Lars Boom & J.J. Lobato was too strong for us, with Roger Kluge not having a great day. We began to fall back slightly while Groenewegen was flung into a perfect position, with Eduard-Michael Grosu picking the right wheel. Caleb would have to pull off an incredible sprint to get this now.

i.imgur.com/oaCDFnE.jpg
An incredible lead out from J.J. Lobato

And as deserved, Groenewegen takes the win ahead of a brave Grosu, and takes back the maglia rosa. Gaviria just overtook Caleb for 3rd, pushing us into a dissapoitning 4th. We may have to re-think our sprint train formation after today.

LottoNL's train was immensely strong today, and we just couldn't match their speed. Caleb is doing everything right but sadly we let him down today. We've got an early rest day tomorrow, and it'll be nice to sleep in & enjoy the flight over to the mainland. We hit the big climbs on Tuesday, where Esteban & Roman get a chance to show off their form.

See you in a couple days!
Alex

Giro d'Italia - Stage 4 - GT

i.imgur.com/pmcP9yA.jpg

Cefalù - Etna (Rifugio Sapienza) 180.3kms

After a day's rest, we're thrown right into the thick of it. Here in Sicily, the first mountain stage of this year's Giro finishes atop the famous Mount Etna. Before we reach Etna however, we'll have to cover the Portella Femmina Morta climb, a low gradient but very long climb, lasting over 30kms. It's gonna be a tiring day for me, but Roman & Esteban will be champing at the bit. A first chance to see who the real contenders are.

Race Report

A 4-man break formed at the start of the day, including King of the Mountains Lukas Pöstlberger. However once they began to climb, Alexis Gouegard (AG2R) separated himself and was left all alone over the top of the Fémmina Morta.

i.imgur.com/fqS9MGM.jpg
Gouegard was by far the strongest of the breakaway today

As we began to climb, Roman was protecting Esteban comfortably at the front of the group. Myself & Simon Gerrans were the only other Orica riders left, as we fought to hold onto the front group. Today is a real test for me, as I haven't performed on any big climbs yet, so seeing where I finish today will be a good indicator of how I'm tracking.

i.imgur.com/1R0Tp4N.jpg
All the big names up front as breakaway riders begin to appear

Over the top of the Femmina Morta, the front group is down to around 65 riders, with myself and Simon still sticking around. With the rain falling hard, this would prove to be a very tough descent. There were several crashes, including in the front group. However, respecting the difficulty of the descent, the front group slowed and allowed any unlucky riders to catch up again. We were lucky to stay on our bikes in the front group, however the entire group surrounding Caleb Ewan fell near the base. Everyone was up quickly, but they would be careful to take it very easy for the rest of the day.

i.imgur.com/HTvlIQ4.jpg
The main group heads downhill

As the peloton rolled toward Etna, an early attack came from Samuel Dumoulin (AG2R). The Frenchman was clearly feeling strong, but any chance of being let to go solo was usurped when Fabio Aru & Sergio Henao jumped on his wheel. Those capable followed, which included Kreuziger & Chaves, however Gerrans & I dropped back, our day done. We'd have to pace ourselves slowly up to the summit while the big guns fought it out ahead.

i.imgur.com/AC8Hbsh.jpg
The first attacks!

With no attacks sticking, and the pace increasing as the road gets steeper, the group began to thin. Most main guys were down to their final domestiques, and the next attack would surely lose all of those. Sky's Beñat Intxausti was on the front at the moment.

i.imgur.com/qlyPxEu.jpg
The ascension of Mount Etna begins

And an attack from Bob Jungels! The Luxembourg champion bursts out the front and a gap immediately forms. No one hops on his wheel and he rides ahead alone. Behind him most domestiques fall behind as the pace to catch up increases.

i.imgur.com/LoJUiMP.jpg
A big attack with 15kms of climbing ahead

With Jungels still ahead and the breakaway now caught, Thibaut Pinot & Tom Dumoulin lead the chase! Chaves can't quite hop on the wheel but paces himself back to those two, leading the rest of the big names.

i.imgur.com/OtOCAx3.jpg
Jungels holding onto a small lead, but would soon be caught

A front pack of 10 is now as one at the front of the road. The pace keeps up high, but soon an attack comes from Tom Dumoulin! The Sunweb leader is here to win and is showing his strength, as he rides away with less than 5kms left! Chaves leads the steady chase.

i.imgur.com/82HTztM.jpg
Dumoulin begins to create a gap

And Diego Ulissi & Thibaut Pinot chase after Dumoulin! But they can't quite reach him, and with just over a kilometre left until the summit, they begin to slow down, as does Dumoulin up front. It's just a slog until the line now, as the rest of the riders just push to the line trying to save as much time as possible.

i.imgur.com/BTV77ui.jpg
Mount Etna proving to be decisive again

Sensing a slowing up front, Esteban Chaves takes one final dig as the finish line inches closer! He overtakes Pinot & Ulissi who can't respond. Dumoulin just pushes to the line, who would make it first?

i.imgur.com/eLgOlro.jpg
Esteban Chaves times his kick perfectly!

But Dumoulin makes it over first, just ahead of a chasing Chaves! A great win and into the pink jersey for the Dutchman! And as the rest roll over, it seems the gaps are quite significant.

i.imgur.com/8lSK2vz.jpg
Into the maglia rosa for Tom Dumoulin!

As the rest of the riders roll over, some disappointments in Vincenzo Nibali (1'18" behind) & Fabio Aru (2'36" behind). Especially bad for Aru, who after his struggles on stage 2, is now nearly 6 minutes behind Dumoulin.

Another great result! Dumoulin timed his attack perfectly, but Esteban was very strong to catch up and minimise the losses, as well as gain time on all the other contenders. He's in a great place now for the rest of the race.

As for me, I lasted up until Etna, and I was happy with that. To finish in the top-100 is good, and I should be able to last the whole 3 weeks if I stay healthy and keep up my form. Back to the flat stuff tomorrow, another chance for Caleb!

See you tomorrow,
Alex

Giro d'Italia - Stage 5 - GT

i.imgur.com/oP63yrP.jpg

Pedara - Messina 157kms

We get a break today after yesterday's opening mountain stage. One more chance for Caleb, and that's all the focus today. The first half of the stage is quite hilly but we should be ok, considering all the flat road before the finish.

Race Report

Today's breakaway was a 3 rider group; Jay Thomson (Dimension-Data), Nuno Bico (Movistar) & Alessandro Tonelli (Bardiani). With only 3 KoM points available it wasn't a day for them, so they enjoyed their time in the sun (a welcome change after yesterday's grey skies), praying for a miracle.

i.imgur.com/tu1yk5g.jpg
The 3-man group on one of the day's short climbs

The peloton was being very careful on the downhill sections as they rode towards the flat roads, but the carnage on the descents continued, with another big crash near the back of the peloton. We had one rider caught up; our lead out man Roger Kluge. He wouldn't make it back to the front in time, and I was now Caleb's number 1 lead out man.

This crash unfortunately led to 5 abandons; Slagter & Langeveld (Cannondale-Drapac), Gorza Izagirre (Movistar), as well as Sonny Colbrelli (Bahrain-Merida), who was performing well in the sprints thus far. Both Cannondale & Movistar were down to 6 riders after today's crash.

i.imgur.com/OBgfScp.jpg
The scene of the crash

As we rode down onto the flat towards the finish line in Messina, the break still had a 2 minute lead, with just over 30kms left. We weren't gonna give them a chance, so we put Michael Hepburn & Sam Bewley on the front, who pushed a blistering pace, and within 10kms they were caught.

i.imgur.com/BAt62qZ.jpg
The chase through Porto Santo Stefano

Just as we began to form our trains, an attack came from the maglia rosa! Very cheeky from Tom Dumoulin but we were having none of it. Maybe just trying to stay safe up the front? Who knows, but he fell back safely into the peloton.

We set up our train with Michael Hepburn, Mitch Docker and then myself leading out Caleb Ewan. We were the first to set up at around 15kms left, and immediately Gaviria hopped on Caleb's wheel.

i.imgur.com/7u5wWzc.jpg
Tom Dumoulin gets reeled back by Orica

Soon it was down to me, with LottoNL inevitably jumping out to my side. Gaviria had moved over to Groenewegen's wheel, he clearly thought that was the best place to be. But we held on neck and neck with Lotto into the final push, with Ewan ready to kick off to the finish line.

i.imgur.com/FllWXTR.jpg
Orica vs. LottoNL once again

And clearly something was off for Caleb, he really couldn't produce anything today, as he struggled to even overtake me. He ended up coming in a very dissapointing 6th, as Fernando Gaviria took the win very comfortably. After a dissapointing start he's found some form, and will be hard to beat from here.

Well nothing we could do today, Caleb just couldn't pull it off in the finish. All we can do is move on and hope for more luck in the future! As for me, I feel I executed the lead-out well, and hey, a top-10 finish! Nice for my palmarès I spose.

Tomorrow will be interesting, see you then!

Great start of the Giro for the team, with Esteban well placed in GC, and that win for Caleb.

Wonder if Alex will get some freedom in one stage to go on breakaway. I think stage 6 would be a good one for him (from break, obviously)

Giro d'Italia - Stage 6 - GT

i.imgur.com/W5rk0Pg.jpg

Reggio Calabria - Terme Luigiane 218.5kms

On first glance today looks like a stage for the sprinters, however a closer inspection reveals a fairly hilly final 30kms, looking full of possibilities for some opportunists. Esteban is looking for any chance to take time off his rivals and today looks a possibility. If he can't get free, Simon Gerrans thinks today looks one for him, and has a free role today.

Race Report

Since today was neither one specifically for the sprinters or the climbers, the break winning today was a real possibility. In today's group of escapees were some familiar faces, such as former KoM leader Lukas Pöstlberger (Bora-Hansgrohe) & Floris Gerts (BMC). The Austrian Pöstlberger earned himself 10 more points on the day's categorised climbs, putting him just 4 points behind current leader Tom Dumoulin.

i.imgur.com/DgVX9uV.jpg
The break fighting for the KoM points

The peloton had other ideas clearly, and never let the breakaway gain more than 4 or so minutes. We sat quietly until the final 60 or so kms, and put the hammer down with Sam Bewley & Michael Hepburn, as the distance between us and the break began to thin dramatically. I was comfortable at the front after a pretty chill first three quarters of the race, and was sitting in front of Simon Gerrans.

i.imgur.com/GklJObS.jpg
The boys working hard on the front

With just over 20kms left, the break was all but caught, and we could see them struggling. They were down to just 3 riders (Pöstlberger, Gerts & Wynants), and couldn't manage to hold us off. The peloton was technically around 70 riders strong, but it was thinning as the road began to undulate, and positioning would be key from here. I heard over the radio that Esteban was feeling top notch today, and the focus was now on him to try and make a difference.

i.imgur.com/x1sonpg.jpg
The maglia rosa surrounded by Orica riders

And as we hit one of the steeper sections of the day, Esteban is off! El Chavito saw his chance and goes off up the road. The teams chasing try to bring him back using their domestiques instead of the leaders, but his lead was sticking!

i.imgur.com/KpLeexy.jpg
The crowd in Fuscaldo enjoy some fireworks!

Thibaut Pinot senses that this could be a succesful attack, and tries to jump on the wheel. But just as he reaches the Colombian, another acceleration proves too much for Pinot. Chaves continues to ride off alone, with less than 5kms left.

i.imgur.com/JF7Q4QH.jpg
The Frenchman unable to hold onto Chaves' wheel

As Esteban rides under the final kilometre banner, the pack was closing on him. He was just holding on but he had worked very hard up to this point, would he be able to hold on? In the peloton were Kreuziger, Ewan (who'd done very well to survive this far) & Gerrans near the front, while I was a bit further back but still in the same group.

i.imgur.com/AocC7Up.jpg
Not long left until the finish line

The sprint was on, Esteban was still holding on, but he was back on the saddle and looking empty. As well as 3 of our riders, Nibali, Dumoulin & Uran were all charging. Surely he'd be caught from here?

i.imgur.com/Ctzlk6S.jpg
Was Chaves cooked?

No! Somehow, Esteban holds off Uran & Dumoulin, who were so close but couldn't quite catch him. Just behind them were Kreuziger & Ewan, as well as myself slightly behind, all finishing in the top 15! There were no big time gaps, but another stage win! Awesome.

Giro d'Italia - Stage 7 - GT

i.imgur.com/0R1V9PK.jpg

Castrovillari - Alberobello 218.5kms

Today is the sprinter's last chance for a while, and we're hungry for another win. The goal today is stay safe, chase down the break, and get Caleb his 2nd win. Simple enough, let's see how we go.

Race Report

The first action of the day came when a group of riders hit the tarmac early on. And there were some big names! The pink jersey was down, as well as Nibali, Aru, Kangert, Zakarin, Ulissi & Caleb Ewan. Everyone was up with no damage, except for two unlucky riders. Simon Clarke (Cannondale-Drapac) & Vasil Kyrienka (Sky) will both abandon the race. A big hit for both teams' climbing ranks.

i.imgur.com/pyJY7G5.jpg
The riders pick themselves up and keep riding

With little chance for the breakaway today, only 3 riders jumped in. Francisco José Ventoso (BMC), Marco Frapporti (Androni) & Eugenio Alafaci (Trek-Segafredo) all fought hard out in front but there's very little chance they'd survive the day with so little chances left for the sprinters.

i.imgur.com/6XNtd4y.jpg
The three-man break out in front

As we rode past the Castle of Massafra, with around 50kms left, we jumped on the front along with LottoNL & Quick-Step and brought the break back in, prepping for the final sprint.

It was an overcast day on the road, but we couldn't complain. As long as it's not raining or snowing we're happy.

i.imgur.com/gnN54Bs.jpg
The peloton passes through the town of Massafra

With just under 20kms left, Mitchell Docker began our lead out train. We were the first to get into position, as Quick-Step & LottoNL battled at the front.

i.imgur.com/2eM1OI0.jpg
The Orica train takes form

First Mitch, then myself, now it was down to Kluge to lead out Caleb. As we entered the final 2kms, Caleb, Groenewegen & Gaviria were all in pretty similar positions. We had again executed well, it was down to Caleb.

i.imgur.com/VuZM3lG.jpg
The front of the peloton

With the finish line in sight, Groenewegen went first. Caleb hopped on his wheel, while Gaviria was working his way to the front.

i.imgur.com/YhfraMp.jpg
They could almost smell the finish

It seemed two men were the quickest today; Gaviria & Ewan. Phil Bauhaus (Sunweb) was challenging but wouldn't win today. Which young gun would take their second stage win?

i.imgur.com/A1WLsyY.jpg
Neck and neck

And another photo finish! Despite all his best efforts, Caleb couldn't quite match the tremendous acceleration of Fernando Gaviria, who took his 2nd win of the Giro. The Colombian is now in top form and undoubtedly the man to beat in the sprints.

Again so close! But it seems Gaviria has truly world class speed, and Caleb is keeping up and getting so close, so we can't be dissapointed with the results. The battle for the points is tempting us to keep Caleb in the race the full three weeks, but the team haven't yet decided.

Giro d'Italia - Week 1 In Review

i.imgur.com/MzUgqDd.png

Well, we're 7 days in, and I'm tired. We've only had one mountain stage so far but my legs are a bit sore! This is my first grand tour, and I can feel it! I've done training this intense but there's nothing like competitive racing day after day, it really takes its toll.

In saying that however, I'm excited for the next two weeks! Bring it on! This has been an awesome experience so far, all the fanfare and excitement surrounding this race is a spectacle and we've had such great success, it's a really great vibe within the team at the moment.

Since we're one third into the race I thought I'd go over each classification, and have a look at who's been over performing, under performing, and my predictions for the rest of the race.

Spoiler
Looking at the current top-10, it seems like there are 9 riders who are still in the race for the podium, with Leopold Konig in 10th is almost 2 minutes behind Sergio Henao.

Esteban Chaves has performed tremendously so far, winning on the uphill finish on stage 6, and coming in 2nd on stage 4 up Mount Etna. He sits in 2nd just 12" behind Tom Dumoulin, who looks more and more like the rider to beat. His tremendous time-trialling skills give him a big advantage over all his contenders, and looks just about the strongest on the mountains aswell, proven by his solo victory atop Mount Etna.

Diego Ulissi looks good in 3rd, but I feel once the bigger mountain stages hit, he will struggle to keep up. A big surpise so far, is the performance of Tanel Kangert. He had a terrific Tour de Romandie, and is keeping that form up. Astana's DS seems to have partially handed him the leader's role after Fabio Aru's very dissapointing performance so far. The 2015 Vuelta champ is already 6 minutes down on Dumoulin and looks to be out of it.

Dissapointing also has been Ilnur Zakarin, with the Russian even further behind at a whopping 7'43". Dan Martin is also around there and has announced his intention to forget GC and focus on stage wins, with Bob Jungels taking over Quick-Step's leadership.

3 Caleb EwanOrica - Scott101
4 Ben SwiftUAE Team Emirates58
5 Tom DumoulinTeam Sunweb52

26 Alexander EdmondsonOrica - Scott13

This is a classification that's hard to pick, considering the lack of flat stages left, and uncertainty surrounding how long the sprinter's will remain in the race. Dylan Groenewegen, Fernando Gaviria & our Caleb Ewan are by far the strongest fast men in the race, and with competition so fierce, they may plan to stick around for the full three weeks to try take the Ciclamino jersey into Milan. However with only 3 stages remaining that are likely to finish in a sprint, there's a strong possibility that even if they were to remain, one of the climbers would steal the classification.

Ben Swift has been making himself known in the intermediate sprints, and is a strong climber as well as sprinter, so he could have a plan to pounce in the final weeks It's a tough one to pick, but if Caleb can stick around, and snag another stage or two, he could have a strong chance at the jersey.

2 Esteban ChavesOrica - Scott30
3 Lukas PöstlbergerBora - Hansgrohe28
4 Floris GertsBMC Racing Team23
5 Diego UlissiUAE Team Emirates14

Considering how little categorised climbs there have been so far, this is a classifcation that is still wide wide open. Anyone could win this from here, most likely the strongest climber. Esteban has been wearing the jersey as of late in place of race leader Dumoulin. We think he is the strongest climber here at the Giro, so keeping that jersey would be terrific. However it's not a priority, and we won't go out of our way at all to hold onto it.

A rider like Dan Martin or Pierre Rolland is a possiblity to take advantage of their deficit in the GC to get free in the last week and steal some points for the jersey. We'll see. A shout out to Lukas Pöstlberger who has ridden with great intent to wear the jersey and sits just 4 points behind Tom Dumoulin.

4 Dylan GroenewegenTeam Lotto NL - Jumbo+ 9'54
5 Alexey LutsenkoAstana Pro Team+ 9'59
10 Alexander EdmondsonOrica - Scott+ 13'52

This is a very interesting classification. It seems there's just 3 riders with any chance at the white jersey here, with Bob Jungels looking the strongest. He has the big advantage of being his team's leader, while his challengers Gaudu & Lopez, who despite looking very impressive in the mountains, may have to sacrifice themselves for their leader's Pinot & Kangert/Aru respectively. This could very well turn into an interesting battle, but at this point Jungels look the frontrunner by some distance.

As for me, it's cool to be in the top-10! I have to say I doubt I'll stay anywhere near there though, as I expect to lose a lot of time on the upcoming mountain stages. The way I've been riding, and will ride, is to empty my tank in going hard for Esteban & Roman, and then ride to the finish at a very leisurely pace, so this classification isn't really a goal for me. It'll be nice to check every now and then though to see how I'm tracking compared to my peers.

That's it for now,
See you guys tomorrow!

Cheers,
Alex
