Something that I'm starting to worry about now is Movistar's reluctance to make their stand clear about the team sponsorship. It's the middle of April and they've still not made up their mind whether to offer an extension or not. I see most (maybe all) other teams announcing their sponsor extension/termination already. I'm not sure when this process will start for us. By chance there is no extension, I'll need some time to find a good replacement. Hope the process, either way, starts soon...
(I also hope that this is no game bug, and there actually will be some sort of communication from the sponsors. I'd hate to go into the fast editor to extend our contract manually. Takes away the continuity and realism  )

Usually they can wait until up to July so I'd say wait until then to see if there's an issue, hopefully they do something soon though, as it'll be a problem to have find a new one on short notice.

The Spaniards really love their climbing! Another race full of climbs, making it conducive for many of the big guns to come out to fight. Another sponsor objective for us. They are coming thick and fast in the first half of the season. Kreuziger and Nieve will be looking to re-ignite their winning partnership from Andalucia again here. Richie Porte, Rigoberto Uran, Rui Costa, Dan Martin, Julian Alaphilippe, , Ilnur Zakarin, Sergio Henao, Louis Meintjes and Steven Kruijswijk were the main contenders among our rivals. A lot of the up-and-comers were out in force to make a name for themselves.
Following is a summary of stages...
Stage 1 - Hilly with 6 major and 2 minor intermediate climbs
A stage with many climbs and there was much action among the leaders already. The breakaway was caught with more than 20 km to go. This brought on more attacks in the last two minor climbs. Only Kruijswijk was able to distance himself from the peloton as all other attacks were pulled back in.
Stage winner - Steven Kruijswijk
Movistar - Roman Kreuziger 2nd, Ruben Fernandez 4th, Mikel Nieve 5th, Jose Herrada 6th, all losing 1'16" in the chasing pack
Other important results - All leaders finished in the bunch
Stage 2 - Hilly with 3 major and 1 minor intermediate climbs
Another hilly stage saw the leaders hold on to each others' wheels as they came down to the finish. Only Kruijswijk lost time, probably feeling the effect of his efforts from the previous stage. He did hold on to his overall lead though. The early breakaway was caught again easily some way before the finish. There were no time gaps created. Rui Costa had the most in his legs and pulled off the stage win.
Stage winner - Rui Costa
Movistar - Kreuziger 8th, Mikel Nieve 10th, Movistar took the lead in team classification, Kreuziger took the points jersey
Other important results - Sergio Henao 2nd, Julian Alaphilippe 3rd, Dan Martin 6th, Louis Meintjes 9th, all in leading group, Steven Kruijswijk 25th, losing 54"
Stage 3 - Mountain with 2 major and 2 minor intermediate climbs
Ruben Fernandez put himself into the breakaway but was caught on the final descent. In the last climb before afore-mentioned descent, Roman Kreuziger tried to catch the peloton unawares with a strong attack. He caught up with Fernandez and they helped each other to build up a gap. The peloton recovered, Taylor Phinney overtaking Kreuziger practically on the line to win the sprint. Kreuziger had to settle for 2nd place.

Movistar - Roman Kreuziger 2nd, Ruben Fernandez 4th, Nieve 6th
Other important results - Julian Alaphilippe 3rd, Rui Costa 5th, Sergio Henao 8th
Stage 4 - Hilly with mountain top finish, including 4 major intermediate climbs
A quiet stage early on burst into life as they peloton reached the fourth climb of the day. The leaders started attacking which laid the foundations for the big showdown of this race. Movistar proved too strong in the end, with the duo of Kreuziger and Nieve attacking in tandem at the start of the uphill finish. the other leaders tried to counter but were dropped easily. Only Ilnur Zakarin provided any kind of challenge to the Movistar dominance, hanging on to Nieve's wheel as they raced up to the finish.

Movistar - Mikel Nieve 2nd, both stage and overall
Other important results - Zakarin 3rd, same time, Porte 4th, losing 45", Kruijswijk 5th, losing 57", Rui Costa 6th, losing 1'25", Rigoberto Uran 7th, Dan Martin 10th, both losing 1'43"
Stage 5 - Hilly with 3 major and 2 minor intermediate climbs
Another stage with a lot of climbs Most of the leaders were able to finish in the leading group. However, this stage was the end of the challenge for three of the GC contenders. Porte, Zakarin And Uran lost upwards of two minutes on this stage, putting them out of contention. Julian Alaphilippe did his reputation no harm by sprinting away with the win.

Movistar - Nieve 5th, Kreuziger 8th
Other important results - Dan Martin 3th, Sergio Henao 4th, Louis Meintjes 7th, Porte 19th, Ilnir Zakarin 20th losing 2'33", Uran 26th, 3'58"
Stage 6 - Individual Time Trial - Hilly - 22.7 km
The biggest threat to Roman Kreuziger's lead would've been Richie Porte, if he was still in contention. This not being the case, Kreuziger was heavily favoured to hold on to his lead comfortably. As it turned out, he dominated the stage, winning by a margin of 11", and beating Porte too by 21"! The stage profile did suit him, but it was also about the execution. Nieve comfortably held on to 2nd place. In truth, the only stage he lost time to Kreuziger was this, having been tied with all through the race.

Kreuziger Nieve 1-2 again! Looks like they love riding together. Both Kreuziger and Landa (in the previous race at Catalunya) have won their prep races for the Giro. These are very encouraging signs for us. The team is also doing its best to keep the sponsor happy in this important year. They can only do this much. The rest is up to Movistar. Would also like to commend the excellent work being done by the domestiques. The likes of Gorkha Izagirre, Jose Herrada, Ruben Fernandez, Winner Anacona and Dayer Quintana have put in a lot of hard work to keep the leaders challenging in most races we've participated in.

And the contract extension offer finally comes in from Movistar on the 1st of May.
Should I extend immediately or should I wait to see if any other sponsors come in with better or different offers?

Personally, I'd stay with Movistar. If you want to check out other offers, they start coming in on the 1st of June. And set your deadline to the 20th of June - you cannot extend/negotiate rider contracts until you have a sponsor for next season, and the negotiation period starts on the 21st of June. |

Yeah Trek looking like favourites for promotion back to the World Tour. Their relegation was a big surprise!
Trek Factory doing well would also mean trekbmc being happy, isn't it?

Hey thanks for the explanation Ripley. I wasn't aware of that. 20th June it is then.
Movistar does look like my best, and safest, bet. The team is set up according to their preferences.

Update from two more races in April...
Criterium International
Stage for stage, perhaps the most balanced race on the calendar. A flat stage, an ITT, and a hilly stage with a mountain-top finish. This race keeps everyone interested. Movistar took a relatively light-weight team to this as they were busy with other races simultaneously. The first stage did not bring any success for us with the absence of any of our top sprinters. A bunch sprint kept most of the peloton at the same time. The second stage was the ITT. Adriano Malori won the stage to take the overall lead. The final stage saw the pre-race favourites slug it out up the climb to the finish line. Benat Intxausti, having already claimed 6th place in the ITT, left everyone else behind to clinch the stage and the overall leader's jersey. There were other good performances from Movistar, including a career best 9th place for the youngster, Isidro Pintassilgo. We did win the team classifications too.
Liege-Bastogne-Liege
The second monuments race of the year was another sponsor objective for us. For the past two years, Movistar have finished fourth in this race, Valverde in 2015 and Luis Leon Sanchez last year. This year, they were both registered for this race. They were joined by Leopold Konig and Mikel Nieve, as Movistar aimed to improve on their past two years' performance. About half-way into the race, there was a huge split in the peloton with five of our riders caught out, including Valverde. The gap to the front group reached to as high as 9 minutes at one stage. Excellent chasing by the Herrada brothers and Malori brought the pack back together. However, his part in the effort to get back to the front group seemed to have an effect on Valverde later on in the stage as he failed to stay in touch with the favourites breakaway leaders. Only Mikel Nieve and Luis Leon Sanchez stayed with the leaders till about 15 km to go. After this, Sanchez too dropped back, leaving Nieve and five others to fight for the win. Rui Costa attacked in the last small undulation to build up a sizeable lead and win the race. Dan Martin and Mikel Nieve sped away from the other leaders to grab the other podium spots. The other leaders were too tired to put in a sprint! Luis Leon Sanchez brought himself to the line in 7th place. It was finally a podium finish for Movistar courtesy of a unlikely source. I think this race puts Nieve's contract extension status out of debate for next year. He's staying.

3rd is a good result in LBL especially as the team isn't based completely around puncheurs.
