Relieved to see Contador make it through another flat stage. And that mighty green train is just super impressive!
That was indeed a bad finish from Van Heerden, looked like he launched early in a desperate attempt to catch up with the riders further up, thus being passed by a lot of sprinter inside the final kilometer. But admittedly, I didn't expect much from Van Heerden this season as we have no proper leadout rider for him. And I suspect a proper leadout is very much needed for Van Heerden due to his bad acceleration. |

Maybe Van Heerden will be better off on a South African team?
Rooting for ol' Conta here too. So far so good!

Well that was a bit frustrating, when the train finally seemed to work properly... Two guys in top 10 would normally be a very nice result, but 8th and 10th doesn't quite cut it.

I have a total of 17 podium positions this season. My sprinters have made 3 of those. No stagewins though - despite me having no less than 9 stagewins in total.

Stauff in 5th is an unexpected bonus. It continues the great scrap for points that is our entire season. Also Zingle is my rider of the season. Without a doubt.

This was a good effort by Gomez Marchante. Where I expected him.
Reguigui in the early break also nice. |

Thats a nice effort from Ratiy. 15th atm is as good as it gets I reckon. So for him to stay somewhere around that position is really nice.
Also Caruso managed the stage well, despite losing quite a lot of time in the end. It is interesting, however, that he seems to be chasing a bit of mountainspoints here. If he is consistent and wants to attack that could be a doable goal for him - If not the KoM win, then atleast something like a top 5 in that competition.
Ă“scar Guerao really struggled today, and it annoys me a bit, that riders like Furdi, Tzortzakis, Smukulis and Keukeleire doesn't drop back to make sure he will get through, but on the other hand I guess that is good in the long run, so all my riders doesn't quit the race once Guerao does. I really can't see him finishing the race, but I hope he will be fresh for stage 8. I wonder what stage 6 will be like. I suspect a breakaway might win, otherwise I can hope that Furdi or Tzortzakis has something left.

Nice ride by Guldhammer fighting his way back to the front. Might have cost him some power in the final few ks, but nevertheless nice to have my Danish captain up in 6th at the moment!

Too bad Henao lost time in the hilly stage. A top 10 seems reachable though.
Good to see Castroviejo and Pantano aggressive as well.

Very good from Contador! Great to see him ride aggressive, hopefully he continues that way, then he might be able to get away from the other contenders once.
A big surprise to see Denifl force a gap to the others and win comfortably, and the same certainly goes for Machado not being there.
Alarcon is also stepping forward as a big favorite for the podium now as the other 84 MO-rider couldn't keep up.
Contador looked solid, but it was slightly worrying that he was gapped with ease by Alarcon in the sprint, which was probably due to his solo effort before he was caught, at least that's what I hope.
Thanks for the report, SN. Now, please fast forward to stage 7 |

This wasn't the ideal start to the mountain hostilities I had in mind, but a 45sdeficit isn't all that dramatic. However I'm beginning to fear that the lack of a proper lieutenant is the reason for Machados's underperformance.
Nice stage though. Congrats to Wiki.
Thanks for the freports SN

At least Rujano now looks comfortable in top 10. Too bad he lost that time in a hilly stage...

Another mature performance from Alarcon riding within himself amongst the favourites and not wasting energy on solo attacks. Tenorio seemed to play it coolest of all, of course he will surely be the man to watch in the chrono in Alacante. If some more time could be extracted from him in the next mountain stage I would be delighted. The time taken on Machado is really good, this will be offset by the losses in the TT - but he really cannot expect to gain time like that in the mountains off of him.
Machado was very disappointing there I feel - he should have been able to match Contador's moves and Alarcons at the very least.
Denifl winning was a surprise, though with this tricky transitional stage on the next perhaps welcome for other teams to take a break from controlling. Wikipedia of course have that role.

Not had a chance to comment yet as an absolute f***er of a week at work has meant mental office hours. Still managing to scan the stage write-ups while shovelling breakfast or lunch in, but this is not gripping me as much as the Giro did (yet). Starting to warm up though now the mtns arrived .
As always, chapeau to SN for all the hard work in reporting and behind the scenes organisation. Going to have to get ready to ante up on my indication of joining the reporters come the 2015 season now that I am no longer quite such a novice!

Amazing ride from Denifl, wasn't expecting that!
Had just been looking for a solid top 7 or 8 overall, now I see a top 5 as achievable and am going to enjoy seeing Denifl sport the maglia rosa, hopefully for a few days.

Unbelievable.
This looked like a stage where Mohs rather fails to stay with his leadout than win it...

Mohs is just on cloud nine here - his sprint train and team are working perfectly.
It really did look like a great chance for a breakaway - but only three guys and real commitment from the sprint teams meant it wasn't to be. Quite surprised (and pleased) to have Morobito in the breakaway and also delighted to see Santos up there in the sprint actually outsprinting that complete waste of space Van Heerden (what a joke he has been here).
Must have been annoying to see Swift run out of swifteness at the end there for SN. Liked the drama at the end so close for Roelandts (such a consistent GT stage winner).
