Disappointed that no one broke away today but smart riding from Pellizotti who knew it would come to a sprint and therefore saved his energy. Very smart thinking

Battaglin and Barbin doing us proud again. Shame that we've lost the KOM jersey, especially with 2 guys on 5 points but let's hope we'll retake our goal. |

Ok, so... if some people are pissed off after stage 4, it's pretty normal. Sorry.
Stage 4
After stage 3, which introduced us to the first serious climbs of this year’s Giro d’Italia, the race isn’t going to slow done or take it any easier. Instead, we toughen it up a bit and today sees the Croce Ferrata as the all-deciding climb. Up ahead of it, the peloton will have to take on the Vibo Valentina. The finish is in Serra San Bruno. The short, though fast descent following the climb up to Croce Ferrata should provide for an intense finish despite the length of 240 kilometers of riding.
For the favourites it’s the first real test of the Giro. While Quintana was burning yesterday and nearly would have reached the finale alone, Nibali showed some weaknesses. Other contenders like Betancur, Scarponi, Porte, Kreuziger, Evans or Basso havn’t show much yesterday, but it’s likely that they will see more to them today.
Barbin tried his luck yesterday already, and of course Bardiani sent of their rider supfront again. The break was initiated by Reda though from Androni. While their lead is already 2 minutes, it’s unlikely that they will remain as a duo upfront since multiple riders try to break out of the peloton and reach the leading riders.
Due to Breschel sole chasing effort, the breakaway gets caught there. Astarloza (EUS), Rabon (OPQ) and Geslin meant to join Barbin and Reda, but obviously Breschel and Saxo had other plans for today. Strong effort by the Dane! Funnily enough, the game repeats itself as soon as Barbin and Reda attack again. And again Breschel moves upfront to catch them. However, with Johnny Hoogerland (VCD) being now in the break next to Astarloza (EUS), Barbin (BAR) and Reda (AND), the break builds up its lead and Saxo give up eventually to place a rider in the break and rather let Belkin do the work.
After a solid 100 kilometers, the group has a lead of over 7 minutes. Looking fine, guys. However the peloton slowly wakes up again. Barbin (BAR), Reda (AND), Astarloza (EUS) and Hoogerland (VCD) certainly all have chances for a good result, if they head with a big enough lead into the finale climb. The intermediate sprint is first passed by Hoogerland ahead of Barbin and Reda. Brouwer is the last rider to collect points at the intermediate, while Cavendish is likely to end the stage without any points.
Ahead of Vibo Valentina, the lead of BOTD has significantly decreased. The perfect opportunity for some riders to break out of the peloton and try their early luck. Orica GreenEdge is featured with two guys up there and we know from yesterday already: It’s Gerrans and Albasini. They have to do the major work. Niemiec denies any work effort until now, Vanendert prefers to catch some bottles too. Surely, the numerical suppority won’t matter so much once they reach the BOTD. Or… no, since Vanmarcke himself puts on his engine and hunts down the two Orica GreenEdge riders. In the process, the lead of the breakaway upfront further decreases to merely a minute.
Great picture friend, but don’t forget to cheer for the riders. Bakelants (RTL) attacks at the foot of Vido Valentina. But the rat’s tail following his attack is enough for Belkin to reel him back in unfortunately.
The mountain sprint is won by Hoogerland and Reda follows him closely. Those two dropped Barbin and Astarloza, who already got caught up the way by a little group. Gesink, Vanendert and the two Orica boys tried their luck once more, however BMC, Movistar and especially Lampre are driving a hard bargain, and it’s unlikely that they will find more success this time around. The break has merely 30 seconds lead on top.
At the foot of today’s finale climb, everything is back together. Brouwer looks good in his Maglia rosa, while BMC did quite some nice chasing effort. Evans may have some great legs today to justify all the performance by Cummings and Oss.
It’s Hesjedal who makes the first move, followed by Evans. However to our utter surprise, Evans puts up his legs, when he noticed that Nibali, Quintana, Niemiec, Vanendert and Scarponi were on his wheel. To the audience bewilderment, he then does nothing and drops. I kid you not… But no reason to get worked up about it, since Evans may just want to save his legs a bit. It just stroke me as odd.
After some attacks, the lead groups consists of Uran (SKY), Scarponi & Niemiec (both LAM), Nibali (AST), Hesjedal (GRS), Pellizotti (AND), Betancur (ALM), Quintana (MOV) and… Giampaolo Caruso (KAT)! However, their lead is marginal at best and it’s still a long way to the top. Nordhaug is currently pacing the peloton.
When the peloton got put back again, Kiserlovski (RTL) tries his luck. Scarponi and Nibali want to follow. Once more, G. Caruso is there too for Katusha. However, the other young Italian can’t hold up to his more famous countryman and a little gap appears. A gap that Hesjedal isn’t willing to close just yet.
The group has a good thing going up ahead. Despite their efforts, Pellizotti, Quintana and Uran just don’t quite reach them yet. Evans is leading the bunch ahead of Kreuziger and Kelderman. It’s 8 kilometers, and the Maglia Rosa is keeping up well. No significant dropping yet in the peloton.
It’s the shark of Messina, who shows his hunger for victories, as he accelerates out of the little group ahead of the peloton. Multiple riders tried to get upfront too his group, but it all didn’t matter anyway, because Group Hesjedal/Kiserlovski got caught. It’s eventually Nibali against the peloton at that point.
Pellizotti then forms a group with an attack. Weirdly enough, he orders some bottles during the attack. If he hadn’t done that, he might have reached Nibali. In any case, the group consists of Uran and Porte (SKY), Kiserlovski (RTL), Kreuziger (TST), Betancur (ALM) and Hesjedal (GRS). Their gap onto Nibali is significant, 45 seconds. Trofimov (KAT) and Niemiec are two riders who are ahead of the peloton, however the Russian has to do all the work since Niemiec is presumably waiting for Scarponi.
Brouwers now has to chase the peloton for his team captain Kelderman. That’s where the team hierarchy kicks in and a pink jersey needs to its work eventually. Brouwer working though isn’t quite the smartest thing maybe, the 48 rider big peloton loses time and already is 50 seconds behind Group Porte. Quintana (in Maglia Azurra) is surprisingly far back in the peloton, while Evans and Basso have to get their own bottles. No helpers left for them already.
Nibali is riding tremendously! He was the first uptop, and has a lead of roughly 40 seconds on Group Porte. However what’s really incredible is that Quintana loses over 2 minutes right now…
It’s clearly his triumph and Nibali sets the road straight for another Giro d’Italia victory. Behind him, Group Porte rushes in with Kreuziger taking 2nd and Pellizotti coming in third. Big loser of the day is without a doubt Quintana, who shows what could have been possible by outsprinting anybody in the peloton and trying to limit his losses.

So,yes... obviously a major AI fuck-up once more by PCM 2013 there in the end concerning some top riders and their weak effort to help Belkin. It may have had something to do with Brouwer in the leader jersey, not sure. However, I'm pretty sure that wouldn't have happened in PCM 2012. Nonetheless, nothing is lost yet. It's merely a gap of 2 to 3 minutes.

Ouch Quintana down 2'40" I see Nibbles holding on too the end...
Not nearly as good as California! |

Another slightly weird stage... Nevertheless a very good report, although maybe a screen of the people coming in behind Nibali might have been good?
Nice to see Kreuziger coming 2nd, shows he has the legs, at least in this early stage of the race.

Shonak, what have you done
I'll take this personally if you will not change this back to normal in the rest of the Giro!

Yes, Cadel, go and get your own bottles when your lieutenant is still in the group.

I wrote earlier that losing Pink would only help Sky as it would force Belkin to defend and chase. And there we go, the two Sky leaders going down the road while Belkin struggle behind, f*cking called it!
Perfect riding from Nibbles to take the lead. He is going to be hard to beat but behind him is could be a very close race.
Also nice to see Hanzen finish strongly over the hills and stay in the GC Top10 for a bit longer. Credit to Brouwer but Adrien is just better

D'oh, there goes my remote chance of a top 10 result. But at least knockout will feel worse
Changed my sig, this was getting absurd.

@Ollfardh Why's that? Kelderman is 11th right now, and he'll no doubt pass Knees & Hanzen.
Also:
Brouwer looks good in his Maglia rosa
While you don't mean it like that at all, I agree

This. Basso only gets mentioned when getting his own bottles, even though Salerno is still there... No wonder only Sagan is scoring points for me.
Nibali well on his way to win the Giro already. Top 5 in GC is so far away for Basso at the moment. |

After reading the stage 3 report: How the **** did all my boys end up losing more than 4 minutes after being very present near the front of the peloton on the climbs???
So that's every dream of a GC top 10 gone. Now I just hope Cristiano isn't hurt...
Edit:
After stage 4: Guess de las Campos is hurt and will be completely wasting 21 race days here. At least the Gorka's look fit...

I'll take this personally if you will not change this back to normal in the rest of the Giro!
You mean the difficutly? Difficutly has been hard from the start and still is.
Nope. I meant you should change the cheats/stat changes that harmed Quintana back to normal (read: domination) mode.
Was just kidding.
A Big Thank You To All MG Reporters!

Nice showing of my two leaders Trofimov and Caruso. It's a shame none of them could finish in front of the peloton. |
