Pity that Roman couldn't grab a podium finish on the GC, but he must still be happy with that seventh place |

@sutty: i think Roman is happy with the 7th place, particularly as he's peaking to lead the Tour this year and so isn't at great fitness.
I have no idea who's going to lead the Giro though

TIRRENO - ADRIATICO
This year’s Tirreno-Adriatico was a bizarre race with many breakaway wins and even one on a flat stage! And the winner was… Leonardo Bertagnolli of Lampre! He was in two successful breakaways early on in the race and defended his leadership of the classification against Alejandro Valverde and co during the latter stages of the race. And from our persepective, there was finally a decent Saxo Bank performance emerging from the quick simulation Sergio Paulinho climbed his way to an excellent and unexpected 9th place in the GC.
The first stage was a team time trial and was comfortably won by Radioshack-Nissan, with Jens Voigt claiming the leader’s jersey.
The second stage was a flat stage resulting in a breakaway win - Mauro Santambrogio held off breakaway companions Stuart O’Grady and Voigt to claim the stage win.
The third stage was very flat, and the sprinters would have none of this breakaway nonsense again, the Goat-Missile* just pipped Andre Greipel to the line.
Spoiler * Goat-Missile: (noun) a term used to describe Mark Cavendish after he specatcularly won the KoM at the Tour of Oman derivation - modern english conglomeration of 'mountain goat' and 'Manx-Missile'
The fourth stage was a hilly stage resulting in another breakaway win. Greg Van Avermaet triumphed in a sprint against Blel Kadri and Egoi Martinez. Bertagnolli and Cancellara weren’t far behind.
The queen stage, with a very difficult uphill finish, was won by Joaquin Rodriguez in a splendid ride. He came home 24 seconds ahead of second-placed Michele Scarponi; and he was followed half a minute later by Mikel Nieve and Bertagnolli.
Stage 6: A hilly criterium stage; and a punchy attack late on from Oscar Freire, who was followed by Bjorn Leukemans, resulted in a stage win. Bertagnolli came in third, 24 seconds ahead of Rodriguez, Valverde and the others.
The final stage was a short ITT; with Cancellara triumphing, closely followed by Tom Boonen and Gustav Larsson.
Here is how the final top 10 of the General Classification stacked up:
1 | | Leonardo Bertagnolli | Lampre-ISD | 26h10'54'' | 2 | | Alejandro Valverde | Movistar Team | +58'' | 3 | | Andreas Kloden | Radioshack-Nissan | +1'00'' | 4 | | Mikel Nieve | Euskaltel Euskadi | +2'03'' | 5 | | Paolo Tiralongo | Astana Pro Team | +4'23'' | 6 | | Joaquin Rodriguez | Katusha Team | +4'49'' | 7 | | Mathias Frank | BMC Racing Team | +5'31'' | 8 | | Michele Scarponi | Lampre-ISD | +8'22'' | 9 | | Sergio Paulinho | Team Saxo Bank | +9'38'' | 10 | | Ryder Hesjedal | Garmin-Barracuda | +11'21'' |
Points Classification: Mark Cavendish
Mountains Classification: Laurens Ten Dam
Young Rider Classification: Edvald Boasson Hagen
Team Classification: Katusha Team
MILANO - SAN REMO
A bunch sprint resulted in a win for Cavendish, just a frame’s length ahead of Daniele Bennati and Boonen, who were a very close second and third respectively. Hushovd and Petacchi soon followed, completing the top 5. Saxo Bank had a miserable showing with our best placed rider being JJ Haedo in 31st and Kristoff, widely tipped to do fairly well here, finished 66th.
VUELTA CICLISTA A CATALUNYA
With four stages raced, this race has been a nightmare for us so far; our leader Daniel Navarro Garcia putting in a decent, but below par showing - currently in 17th place but almost 12 minutes down on clear leader Andy Schleck who is continuing his early season-form; who has streaked ahead and now has a lead of more than two minutes over second placed Chris Horner.
Spoiler 'Andy Schleck who is continuing his early season-form': Never thought I would ever need to write that
I will update you on the progress over in Catalunya after the Criterium International; and also after that has concluded I will tell you what happened in the early cobbled classics, E3 and Gent-Wevelgem.
Spoiler Oh and sorry for all the flags, I just have a strange addiction to them

CRITERIUM INTERNATIONAL
STAGE 1 PORTO VECCHIO - PORTO VECCHIO
So here we are in Corsica for the start of the three-stage Criterium International. The first stage is a sprinter's dream, a very short stage measuring just 72km and flat pretty much all of the way.
There were a few early attacks and a small break soon got settled. However, they probably wouldn't have much luck and we would be pulling hard at the front of the peloton if they got away too much, we felt that Lucas Sebastien Haedo had a good chance to maybe get a podium place in the sprint after favourites Demare and Modolo.
There was another attack and the break eventually swelled to seven riders, but none of them were particularly good fighters and they wouldn't have the chance to build up a substantial enough gap over 40km or so before they would start to get reeled in.
The intermediate sprint was taken by Khatuntsev of RusVelo
We were travelling along; idly gazing at the vineyards when we realized the finish was almost upon us! Such short stages can take you by surprise!
The breakaway was soon absorbed back into the pack and we were off to battle stations! LS Haedo tried to find the wheel of first Modolo and then Demare, but failed so we decided to create an impromptu mini-sprint train, with me at the front, and then Jaroslaw Marycz, and then Haedo.
I accelerated quite well and kept pace with the other trains. I fell back and Jaroslaw took over with LS behind his wheel (on the right side behind the Colnago and Europcar riders)
1km to go and Marycz and Brambilla (the Colnago leadout man) are level-pegging after a great leadout from Marycz but then Modolo launches his sprint. LS quickly responds and it would be close between the two of them
500m to go and Modolo is leading by a couple of lengths, and Pelucchi of Europcar is coming up next to Haedo fast.
But in the end Modolo just had too much raw speed and took the victory ahead of Haedo (who's shoulder you can see behind Modolo) and William Bonnet who came from nowhere in the last 100m right on the far left to finish third. Demare, easily the stage favourite launched his sprint way way too late as the FDJ train got in all sorts of confusion and could only come home 7th
That was a very exciting finish to the stage and well done Lucas on a great sprint but praise for the day has to go to Jaroslaw Marycz for an excellent leadout that delivered him at the perfect place.

I finished inside the peloton having done my work as part of the train. Tomorrow will be a time-trial, here's hoping for better results here than in Paris-Nice!

CRITERIUM INTERNATIONAL
STAGE 2 PORTO VECCHIO
Spoiler Photobucket finally works on my computer (for some strange reason it hasn't previously so photos should be better now I am aware that they are .png's so tell me if they take a long time to load, they seem fine on mine though
Today was the time-trial stage of the Criterium International and I would be looking to get a decent result here, the rest of the field was quite weak with the exception of Movistar, who seem to have mistaken the race for a WT race and sent Costa, Karpets, Bruseghin and several others; compared to our youth team plus LS Haedo etc.
Spoiler Sorry this image has disappeared, I'm working on it
I was off down the ramp, looking to put my Paris-Nice time-trial woes behind me.
I certainly look very determined in this photo!
Meanwhile up the road Bruseghin had stormed to the top of the provisional table with a superb ride
The intermediate time-check showed me as being a provisional eighth place, eight seconds behind Bruseghin who had just overtaken Karpets at the top
I sped up a bit on the last quarter of the section and still felt I had a little more to give as I crossed the line! Nevertheless a provisional 3rd place was something to be happy about
After that all our eyes were on Manuele Boaro, our talented Italian youngster who was a little older than me who is a proficient time-triallist; but he finished a second behind me.
Bruseghin held on to top spot after a late challenge from Bonnet, who takes the overall leadership so far after his 3rd place in Stage 1
1 | | Marzio Bruseghin | Movistar Team | 10'47'' | 2 | | William Bonnet | FDJ-BigMat | +1'' | 3 | | Dmitri Champion | Bretagne-Schuller | +2'' | 4 | | Rui Costa | Movistar Team | +4'' | 5 | | Vladimir Karpets | Movistar Team | +6'' | 6 | | Damien Monier | Cofidis, Le Credit en Ligne | +8'' | 7 | | Matthias Fischer | Team Saxo Bank | +9'' | 8 | | Manuele Boaro | Team Saxo Bank | +10'' | 9 | | Matteo Montaguti | Ag2r La Mondiale | +11'' | 10 | | Rein Taaramae | Cofidis, Le Credit en Ligne | s.t. |
So that was my first top 10 result as a professional cyclist! I feel very pleased with today's performance and hopefully I can use it to kick on in the very tough mountain stage tomorrow

CRITERIUM INTERNATIONAL
STAGE 3 PORTO VECCHIO - COL DE L'OSPEDALE
Today was the big day. A mountain stage with a gruesome climb at the end. I would be looking to challenge here, but people like David Moncoutie, Gianluca Brambilla, and Rui Costa remained the favourites.
We'd barely come out from behind the starting banner before there were some attacks!
I settled into the front of the peloton just behind Rafal Majka. You may notice I'm wearing the white jersey - that’s because I'm second in the young rider rankings behind Modolo but he wears the points jersey so I get my first special jersey to wear! It makes me feel so special
After a few failed attacks, the breakaway settles and it contains eight riders, with none of them being particularly strong climbers.
A piece of flat terrain! There wasn't going to be much more of this...
Who do you think won this intermediate sprint?
FDJ started pushing the pace up; making sure the breakaway didn't extend its lead too far - they obviously seemed intent on protecting Bonnet, the leader of the GC, despite the fact that he was a sprinter who could time-trial and was even more of a non-goat than our Haedo.
It was soon time to start some serious climbing! Although the final mountain was where the race would be decided, the three categorised climbs that come before it are not easy by any means and we had to retain focus to make sure that we didn’t get on the wrong side of a split.
The pace from FDJ at the front meant that even with 73kms to go the gap was under 2 and a half minutes; as we started to climb again.
The first >10% gradients started to appear - it was really tough going at the front of the peloton. Luckily I could count on the full support of my teammate Majka
My legs were aching already and we still had two more mountains to go! At least we wouldn't be climbing the one behind me
We had now conquered that hurdle and now it was time for the descent. Bonnet and co were still keeping up with the pace though
The descent didn't last long though and it was time to climb the penultimate mountain. Here we are getting quite close to the breakaway
Wily old warrior David Moncoutie decided it was time to attack and other favourites like Brambilla followed him. However Saxo Bank was having none of it!
Modolo (green jersey) and young rider leader falls off the back. If I could keep on going Imight be able to claim the white jersey!
Cozza of NetApp wins the mountain sprint; with the breakaway still just holding on.
We were dictating the terms in the peloton, still trying to reel in this stupid breakaway that still held a 50 second lead
We catch the breakaway as we try and weave our way past the motorbikes
Right! Here we were at the bottom of the final, daunting ascent, with a peloton of 45 that had survived the earlier obstacles. The attacks would start coming thick and fast now.
The first to attack was Anthony Charteau of Europcar; but his attack soon got eaten up
Thereafter followed many attacks and counter-attacks, notably by Moncoutie, Txurruka, Brambilla, and Charteau - all four of them eager to get away
But then a punchy attack from Brambilla managed to slip off the peloton's radar and he got away
There were just 10kms to go and he had a 20-second lead over the chase group. Me and Rafal decided to go off after him, accelerating at the front of the pack.
Now was the time to go. I attacked, looking determined, with Brambilla in my sights. Unfortunately Rafal wasn't able to go with me as he had nearly exhausted his energy by now.
Taaramae followed me and we were soon right behind him. But the pack was there too not far behind and I had used up a lot of my reserves attacking
But the pack just didn't have the energy to put the pressure on us. Brambilla is at the top, followed by me and then Taaramae; and then the pack after a gap of around 20 seconds
With just under 5km to go, it became clear that Brambilla was going to win fairly comfortably; but he was 33 seconds behind me in the Young Rider rankings after a poor time-trial for him; could I limit my losses to under that and claim the white jersey for real? The gap was 28 seconds, it was going to be close! And Taaramae was probably a bigger threat, he was just 2 seconds behind. If he drew away from me then it was over.
Oh dear! Taaramae starts to pull away from me. 'I have to keep going' I told myself. The noise from the spectators lining the road was phenomenal and I was trying to use that to motivate me on. I could still claim third place, as we were 48 seconds ahead of the chasing group of 11
2km to go and Taaramae has found some inner strength somewhere and is now fast closing in on Brambilla! This was going to be closer than I thought for the win!
I could see the 1km banner and Taaramae in front of me but Brambilla had disappeared. His lead was now 55 seconds over me. I would drop to third in the young jersey rankings. But that would probably also mean 3rd in the GC which would be a fantastic achievement! I had to keep focussed and not let the chasing group 50 seconds behind me close up the gap.
Brambilla passes the 1km banner with the Estonian hot on his heels. I am just about to round the corner
'Aaagh! What the hell's he doing here? Go away!'
Brambilla wins, no celebration or anything, he's probably so exhausted after a superhuman effort to take the stage and the General Classification, just, I think, with Taaramae a close second in the GC.
I cross the line, comfortably in 3rd, but 1 minute and 24 seconds in arrears. What a stage! It was exciting, while being torturous on the muscles at the same time.
So here are the results of the stage - I managed to keep quite a wide gap to Moncoutie who attacked late on to get a 10 second gap over the rest of the chasing group
1 | | Gianluca Brambilla | Colnago - CSF Inox | 5h02'38 | 2 | | Rein Taaramae | Cofidis, Le Crédit en Ligne | + 33'' | 3 | | Matthias Fischer | Team Saxo Bank | + 1'24'' | 4 | | David Moncoutié | Cofidis, Le Crédit en Ligne | + 2'16'' | 5 | | Marzio Bruseghin | Movistar Team | + 2'26'' | 6 | | Rui Costa | Movistar Team | s.t. | 7 | | Guillaume Levarlet | Saur - Sojasun | s.t. | 8 | | Branislau Samoilau | Movistar Team | s.t. | 9 | | Anthony Charteau | Team Europcar | s.t. | 10 | | Simon Geschke | Team Argos-Shimano | s.t. |
I was extremely pleased with my performance here today in Corsica, it means I have now scored a few CQ points, contributing to Saxo Bank's unexpected rise from bottom place out of the World Tour teams! Yay! A third place in this stage coupled with a good performance in yesterday's time-trial meant I was a minute ahead of fourth-placed Bruseghin and took third place quite easily (but I was a bit far behind Brambilla and Taaramae wasn't I?)
General Classification
1 | | Gianluca Brambilla | Colnago - CSF Inox | 6h53'54'' | 2 | | Rein Taaramae | Cofidis, Le Crédit en Ligne | + 10'' | 3 | | Matthias Fischer | Team Saxo Bank | + 1'03'' | 4 | | Marzio Bruseghin | Movistar Team | + 2'04'' | 5 | | Rui Costa | Movistar Team | + 2'08'' | 6 | | Julien Simon | Saur - Sojasun | + 2'15'' | 7 | | David Moncoutié | Cofidis, Le Crédit en Ligne | + 2'17'' | 8 | | Branislau Samoilau | Movistar Team | + 2'27'' | 9 | | Simon Geschke | Team Argos-Shimano | + 2'28'' | 10 | | Guillaume Levarlet | Saur - Sojasun | + 2'32'' |

It's time for the promised flag-laden update on results around the cycling world, there's been quite a bit going on!
VUELTA CICLISTA A CATALUNYA
After a very exciting fifth stage, which saw a magnificent solo victory for in-form Luis Leon Sanchez and a great 8th place for our own Chris Anker Sorensen; there were wins for Tony Gallopin, another man in great shape at the moment, in the flatter Stage 6 and Andy Schleck in the last stage, sealing the General Classification for the Luxembourgian. Daniel Navarro Garcia recovered a bit during the last few stages, but still finished down in 15th.
General Classification:
1 | | Andy Schleck | Radioshack - Nissan | 30h31'59 | 2 | | Luis León Sánchez | Rabobank Cycling Team | + 3'15 | 3 | | Alexandre Vinokourov | Astana Pro Team | + 4'19 | 4 | | Fabian Wegmann | Garmin - Barracuda | + 8'10 | 5 | | Stefano Garzelli | Acqua Sapone | + 10'06 | 6 | | Chris Horner | Radioshack - Nissan | + 10'11 | 7 | | Fränk Schleck | Radioshack - Nissan | + 10'21 | 8 | | José Iván Gutierrez | Movistar Team | + 12'40 | 9 | | Xavier Florencio | Katusha Team | + 15'16 | 10 | | Mikhail Ignatiev | Katusha Team | + 15'54 |
Points Classification: Andy Schleck
Mountains Classification: Danilo di Luca
Young Rider Classification: Tony Gallopin
Team Classification: Radioshack-Nissan
E3 - HARELBEKE
This year’s E3 was a dangerous race fraught with danger and it proved too much for several people as a bad crash during one of the cobbled sections eliminated several people who had to withdraw due to some serious injuries. The most notable amongst the riders down was Edvald Boasson Hagen, who is out until May with a broken wrist; and Lotto Belisol’s Brian Bulgac was the unluckiest, receiving a blow to the head - he will be out until July with a fractured skull. In the end there was a group of three riders out in front at the end - Tom Boonen easily outsprinted his companions Juan Antonio Flecha and Fabian Cancellara to take the win; after a few near-misses in earlier races this season. Nick Nuyens finished an impressive 6th - valuable WT points
GENT - WEVELGEM
The usual suspects got to work at Gent - Wevelgem and Juan Antonio Flecha completed a good win by sprinting past Cancellara, who must wish he could sprint a bit better after this and E3. Nuyens finished 6th again, another good result; and we hope he can keep his form going for the Ronde and Paris-Roubaix. It was a horror week for the Norwegians, however, as after EBH’s crash at E3, our man Alexander Kristoff contracted knee tendinitis before the race and Thor Hushovd broke his collarbone, meaning he would miss RvV and P-R.
As there is a little bit of a natural break in the season, it's a good time to look at how the rankings are stacking up so far. That's coming soon...

After victory in E3 and several other consistent results Tom Boonen jumps to the top of the World Tour rankings. Luis Leon Sanchez is close behind after a terrific early season including victory in Paris-Nice and a second place in Catalunya. Flecha rounds off the top three due to victory in Gent-Wevelgem and second place in E3.
1 | | Tom Boonen | Omega Pharma-Quick Step | 205 | 2 | | Luis Leon Sanchez | Rabobank Cycling Team | 193 | 3 | | Juan Antonio Flecha | Sky Pro Cycling | 140 | 4 | | Alexandre Vinokourov | Astana Pro Team | 129 | 5 | | Chris Horner | Radioshack-Nissan | 128 | 6 | | Andy Schleck | Radioshack-Nissan | 127 | 7 | | Fabian Cancellara | Radioshack-Nissan | 118 | 8 | | Mark Cavendish | Sky Pro Cycling | 107 | 9 | | Leonardo Bertagnolli | Lampre-ISD | 104 | 10 | | Christian Knees | Sky Pro Cycling | 102 |
Radioshack-Nissan are miles ahead in the team classification after good results all round from Horner, Schleck and Cancellara. We have lifted ourselves up to 12th place after stringing together some decent results over March.
1 | | Radioshack-Nissan | 542 | 2 | | Omega Pharma-Quick Step | 420 | 3 | | Sky Pro Cycling | 418 | 4 | | Rabobank Cycling Team | 297 | 5 | | Lampre-ISD | 212 |
Luis Leon Sanchez is out in front, not surprisingly, after victory in Mallorca and Andalucia can be added to his WT achievements. However Boonen is close behind in second place after good results everywhere - MSR, Paris-Nice, E3 etc.
Then its a big gap to the Goat-Missile who is third by virtue of his win at MSR and victory in two Tirreno-Adriatico sprints (and of course the KoM jersey at Oman, how could I nearly forget!) Best of the Pro Conti's is Leif Hoste in 14th place.
1 | | Luis Leon Sanchez | Rabobank Cycling Team | 857 | 2 | | Tom Boonen | Omega Pharma-Quick Step | 834 | 3 | | Mark Cavendish | Sky Pro Cycling | 598 | 4 | | Fabian Cancellara | Radioshack-Nissan | 591 | 5 | | Andy Schleck | Radioshack-Nissan | 567 | 6 | | Juan Antonio Flecha | Sky Pro Cycling | 556 | 7 | | Sylvain Chavanel | Omega Pharma-Quick Step | 544 | 8 | | Matthew Goss | Orica-GreenEDGE | 430 | 9 | | Luca Paolini | Katusha Team | 422 | 10 | | Jose Ivan Gutierrez | Movistar Team | 421 | ... | 108 | | Matthias Fischer | Team Saxo Bank | 109 |
Radioshack streets ahead in the CQ Team Rankings as well, with Saxo Bank a rather miserable 20th, but ahead of Euskaltel and Liquigas who have got off to a very poor start indeed. Meanwhile in the Pro Conti division Saur-Sojasun and Argos-Shimano have got off to fliers, lying in 12th and 13th respectively.
1 | | Radioshack-Nissan | 2776 | 2 | | Sky Pro Cycling | 2319 | 3 | | Omega Pharma-Quick Step | 2182 | 4 | | Rabobank Cycling Team | 2119 | 5 | | BMC Racing Team | 1612 |
That's it from me, see you sometime soon - I might be able to bring you a special report of what happens in Ronde van Vlaanderen and Paris-Roubaix, with pictures!
