Tour de Bretagne Cycliste – Trophée des Granitiers


Stage 2 - Vannes - St Méen le Grand (157km)

Two KoM sprints but pretty flat in general. So again no stage for us. We will try to send someone into the breakaway but other than that we will "relax" and finish without time loss.

A group of 5 was formed after 50km. One of these is Mannion, who was already active yesterday. Unfortunately it took him 25km of solo riding before he found contact. So he wasn`t able to win the Cat.1 and only finished 4th there. Still 8p for him and he needs 2 more at the next climb to overtake Bosters in this ranking.

Similar situation again. Koga and Endura make the pace for their sprinters.
The three PCT teams including Europcar with race leader Arashiro are not seen yet.

But with 70km and 5min gap they come to the front. What a pity. I just thought we would have a very calm day.

And so Mannion was caught again a bit earlier than yesterday. Still 14km to ride but the sprinters of course position themselves already.
Unfortunately he lost too much energy in the solo ride so that he got no points at the 2nd KoM and is still 2nd in the ranking.

I just want to get my massage after the race. Somehow I really had bad legs today and felt like 20 years older. Hopefully this will be gone tomorrow.

Tiernan-Locke with 3 helpers ahead of him and Arashiro just behind in a perfect position. And what`s this. Stuyven is coming next already next to Stroetinga and Van Poppel. He never was in such a good position that late in the race so far.

Exactly the same podium as yesterday. Arashiro wins the second day in a row and keeps the lead. Stuyven lost all his energy in the fight for Arashiro`s wheel and felt back to 28th in the end.
Mannion lost some time today and couldn`t keep his actual top10 while I was pretty lucky in the end. Together with Boswell I almost lost contact to the peloton and were the last counted riders in the peloton.
(really was surprised how much you have to control your riders during the finish so that they don`t lose contact...not ideal)

@ Ian: True, quite a few things I still have to learn about PCM12. So far I am not 100% happy with the AI as some things I liked in PCM11 seem to be gone.

Nothing but flat today. Don`t know how they have found spots for 3 KoM here. Even one sprint is on the highest point.
Yet another flat stage and so another chance for me for fine tuning.

We already reached the sprint but still no breakaway has formed yet. Now another try that looks better as the peloton stopped their high pace.
Unfortunately none of our riders in there.

Last stage where I will be able to relax in the peloton. From tomorrow on I must be more offensive. My legs feel better than yesterday and the cramp is gone luckily.

With 6km to go de Haan (Jo Piels) is caught as last one of the former break. He collected enough points and will wear the KoM tomorrow.

And the next crash and again a Bontrager guy. Mannion felt and with him Meijers of the Parkhotel Valkenburg team.
Hopefully this was enough bad luck for our team in this race.

Great picture with the three jersey next to each other. Today it`s Tiernan-Locke winning against Arashiro and Van Poppel in 3rd.
We wanted to avoid another crash on the wet roads and came in all together in the middle of the peloton.
The "easy" part is done now and I haven`t lost any time. So first goal achieved. Next stages will be the race deciding ones.

Good start to the season for the team with Dombrowski's first win in the Battenkill. Let's hope Ryan can get a good result in Bretagne.

Thanks all.
@PCM rulezz: Hope so as well. At least the leaders were able to stay so far.
To the AI question: I am not sure yet as I haven`t played a lot and maybe it`s also because I don`t have the strongest helpers. But even if you go 99% until you have no bars left their will still be a lot of riders in this group that are far weaker. And also your helper that made the pace won`t fall back and can even stay in the first rows, just not doing the pace then. Seems to be pretty weird but need to ride more stages to check how it is in general.

Won`t be there until Sunday evening and have probably less time in the next 2 weeks then. So here the first hill stage in the Bretagne.

Tour de Bretagne Cycliste – Trophée des Granitiers


Stage 4 - Missillac - Mûr de Bretagne (154,8km)

Time for me to see how far I am. The Mûr de Bretagne is a tough climb and we have to pass this point 3 times. There I have to be concentrated a lot as the PCT teams surely try something there as they have 2-3 riders with the possibility to win the race.

4 riders in the breakaway. We decided that we will go for a good stage result and didn`t send a rider to have more support behind.

The PCT teams immediately show their ambitions today and organize the chase with 90km and a 6min gap.

A bit surprisingly La Pomme Marseilles completely take over the work with the final circuit coming closer. I don`t know who`s their leader here but normally none of them is a real puncheur.

Also Endura showing themselves at the front for Tiernan-Locke who could be strong enough to win the stage.
Also some of our riders have to work now as the PCT teams and La Pomme totally stopped although the first still have a 3min gap with 32km.

First passing and I am looking for good spots to attack on the next or last passing.
Then I had another look and saw an Europcar rider attacking on the left.

It`s Christophe Kern attacking with 20km to go. This came a bit unexpected for us as we expected the favourite attacks at the 2nd climb.

The first passing already reduced the first group a lot. I had no problems to stay here together with Dombrowski, Boswell and Parker. Unfortunately Mannion wasn`t able to stay and felt back.
15km left and the first have a 1'20 gap. Kern at least got a 25s gap on us.

But he was caught again just a bit later. Obviously he slowed down a bit seeing that he won`t get allowed to ride away.

Double attack by the next PCT team. This time it`s Feillu on the left and their leader Coppel on the right.
It`s like Feillu is the stronger looking back as Coppel can`t follow any longer.

We almost reached the 2nd finish passing and the breakway is caught. Guay (Roubaix) was the last one to survive.

No attacks during the climb but coming to the top a lot of riders attacked and you could see lots of Cofidis, Europcar and Saur jerseys.
I had no energy to follow and was a bit blocked at this moment just like my other team mates.

7km left and we obviously missed the attack. Boswell and Parker went to the front and pulling hard now while I tried to improve my position in the group.

1,7km left and the group is still ahead. Time for me to attack. I came to the front and pulled away.

But it was not strong enough as the others caught me again. I probably underestimated the climb a bit and went too early.

Moncoutie with a great win ahead of Coppel and Malacarne. Only Kern and surprisingly Tarride have been able to stay with them. Fouchard came in 29s later while we just like the rest of the favourites finished 38s later and lost some time.

So this is the negative side. The positive is that we are still in the fight for the top10 and we finished together with some strong riders like Tiernan-Locke or Feillu. But in general you have to admit that there is still a huge gap between the CT and PCT division as shown today. I still need to learn a lot.

Still need to learn how to ride these kind of uphill finishes as far weaker guys outsprinted me here.

Maybe La Pomme Marseilles worked solely for publicity, or they knew Tarride was having great legs!

I hope you get used to 12 soon! However, it's still a decent result.

@ Ian: Hope so, too. Shouldn`t work too long I guess. Mountain stages will be interesting again as I will first ride them in the next race, which is actually already California against much stronger climbers. So probably better to wait for weaker fields to rate me there. Wink
And sprints won`t come before next season. Wink

Todays stage is again rated as flat stage although there are lots of hills and a difficult circuit in the end. So maybe some riders will try something there.

11 riders in the breakaway and with Mannion we have our rider there as well. He is supposed to collect more points here. Unfortunately also de Haan is in there as well as KoM leader as also Salgueiro who already collected some points.

A new team at the front today. Chipotle doing the pace but with 90km they still have 8'50 to chase.

73km left and more than 10min. Obviously we will se the first successful breakaway this season. And luckily one of our riders in there. On the other hand the teams behind go a high risk there as Trampusch and de Haan as best placed riders are less than 6min behind and virtual leader now.

With 10km to go the gap is down to 5min and although they won`t catch the breakaway they at least made sure that none of them will get the lead here.

7km to go and I just thought I could give it a try on the 2nd last lap. I immediately created a gap to the peloton.

Seeing that Huizenga (RaboCT) also attacked in the breakaway and Mannion surely one of the weaker sprinters there, he had to follow.

I already have a 45s gap and now Tiernan-Locke attacks and the peloton increases the speed again. Not the best news for me unfortunately.

Unfortunately no winner picture today for some reason. Huizenga was able to stay away and won the stage while Mannion was caught again and lost all his energy in the fight for the KoM and this last attack. So he had to be happy with 11th today.
And here you can see me clearly having a gap to the rest of the peloton. But quite a pity for me that the officials gave all of them the same time, so I couldn`t gain time today and spent the energy for nothing...Bad luck I guess.

On the other hand Mannion is 2nd in KoM now and we got the lead in the team ranking. So I guess still a successful day.

And due to no updates yesterday here already the 2nd stage today.

Tour de Bretagne Cycliste – Trophée des Granitiers


Stage 6 - Douarnenez - Lannion (144,9km)

Not the hardest stage until the final circuit with 3 tough climbs. The stage and maybe even the race should be decided there. Hopefully we are able to perform a bit better today.

A group of 5 today. None of our riders in there as we want to make the race as hard as possible. So we need the riders in the peloton.

107km to go and although the gap isn`t higher than 3min at the moment we already went to the front doing a high pace.
I am still sitting covered in the pack waiting for the final.

With 40km to go and the gap below 2min more riders attack. No GC guys but better puncheurs that try to win todays stage.

Parker and Mannion at the front now still with a high pace. Only Dombrowski and myself without any work today.

25km and the group almost caught. Now Cofidis is coming and increasing another time. Now even the GC guys struggle and have to fight.

Ouch. Reinders is crashing in first position just ahead of Parker and me. Luckily we were able to avoid a crash although I am still asking how Parker was doing this in this situation.

Second last lap and now the first attacks. Coppel at first and now Moncoutie follows on the steep Mur. Unfortunately I once again have to admit that these guys are a level above myself although I felt strong and was riding in the first positions.

Coppel and Feillu seem to be the strongest and have a small gap on the last climb. Behind a group of 34 including the 4 leaders of us.

Jerome Coppel wins the stage and also takes the lead from Moncoutie.

14s later the big group around me finished all together. So I still keep a good overall without much time loss but on the other side I wasn`t able to improve my position.
And unfortunately all the work by Boswell and Parker didn`t pay off and the group was still pretty big and even these two had no problems to stay in there.

True. But the goal of 1-2 top10 will be hard now although it`s the same time from the 8th. Just not enough time gaps although I made 99% pace with Boswell and Parker. I would have liked to see more selections then but probably the hills haven`t been hard enough.

Similar stage to the last three actually. Not the hardest until the final circuit. 4 1/2 laps over hills combined with cobbles this time. Definitely the last chance for us to improve our position.

A big group and none of our riders in there. We actually wanted but missed the right move.

So we changed our tactic and now try to haul them in again. Stuyven with the early work. 75km and a gap of just 3min.

50km and a gap of just 2'20. Looking good for us so far. Meanwhile Rake (Joker) tries it with an attack to reach the group.

3rd lap and Tiernan-Locke attacks. Boswell and Parker still pushing hard bringing him immediately back.

Next attack by Fouchard, maybe the most aggressive rider this race. He never becomes tired to try. Also he won`t have luck today.

Looking good for the group now. They saved enough energy to stay ahead of the group and we are not able to bring them back. So the stage result is gone, now we have to try to create a gap to improve in the GC.

Tronet (Auber) wins the race after a late attack. Rake, who attacked with 50km to go is 2nd today. Probably we should have sent one of our guys with him.

The peloton reached the finish together including Fouchard and Dombrowski. As 16th GC I finished as best of our team with them following on 17-19. So a decent race for us but we misses our goals, also due to the lack of time gaps. But also due to the domination of the French PCT teams, that really let us suffer sometimes.

For me this was a good test and now I see I have to learn a lot when I want to have success also in bigger races. My first season peak was reached now and soon I will go to California for my absolute season highlight although I won`t have GC chances there. More something for Dombrowski, Boswell or Parker. But I surely will try something on one of the stages.

Thanks both of you. Will need to improve a bit but it was good to ride this race.
And although I don`t know when the first stage will come here already the presentation.

Amgen Tour of California

Here we go. The AMGEN Tour of California starts soon. It`s the biggest American cycling race with lots of possible GT contenders. Different to the earlier versions it`s now being raced in May to be a preparation race for the Tour de France. So at the same time than the Giro there are often less Italians at the start line but I can promise you, we have a very big one here this year.

The biggest race for us and a pure highlight to be here. With 7 World Tour teams it`s the maximum we will have this season.
For us Americans it`s always something special to ride here against the best. The extra motivation mustn`t be underestimated and so we have the biggest contingent with 9 American teams plus Spidertech and EPM as American Tour teams.

It was first held in 2006 and obviously still a pretty new race with famous winners like Leipheimer, Horner, Landis or Rogers. One day we want to have a winner here as well and with Dombrowski we have a big candidate for this in a few years.

The course will start in the San Francisco area with some stages for the sprinters although all of them are pretty hilly and you need a good form to have a chance in the finish. For the GC guys it`s mainly to avoid time loses.
The second half of the race then is in the more mountainous are aroudn Los Angeles with the highlight being the Mt.Baldy stage. (I changed this one to Johan`s Fantasy GT Mt.Baldy stage as the original is 400m of height shorter than it was in real)
It`s the only real mountain stage and so you must be up there if you want a podium in this race as you can lose more time on this climb than you probably lose in the time trial.

We send all our climbers here with Dombrowski having the best chances for a top15 here. Boswell and Parker will help him as much as possible and maybe even go for the KoM.
Mannion and myself will be there in the hilly area to support them and will also get chances in the breakaways. I don`t have the legs I had a week ago but still feel great to show some good performances.
Brown, Avis and De Buyst complete the squad and will mainly be helpers and breakaway guys.
So you see we won`t have any sprinters or time trialists in our squad and need to concentrate on the mountain stages. In the other stages we should try to join the breakways for surprising results.

The startlist is amazingly strong. No matter which WT team. All of them have 2-3 brilliant riders and should decide the GC here.
Top favourite as so often Sky with Bradley Wiggins. With Porte, Boasson Hagen and Lövkvist he has lots of support. Also BMC with Evans and Van Garderen can`t be underestimated and should be their biggest opponents.
Liquigas with Nibali, RadioShack with Andy Schleck and Klöden, Rabobank with Sanchez, Garmin with Hesjedal, Vandevelde, Millar and Zabriskie, Astana with Kreuziger.
This is almost a possible top15 of great stage racers that are hard to beat. Still the smaller teams will give the best to mix this a bit.
Best chances probably for Garzelli, Serpa, Dombrowski and Pedraza to break the World Tour lines.
