Tour of Oman - Stage 5

img254.imageshack.us/img254/6933/stage5.jpg

The fifth stage of the Tour of Oman will be the crucial day for the GC.
The stage is a time trial, with a length of 19 km.

On our team we'll have our hopes in Bagdonas. He did a great job yesterday, and is for sure our best rider in a TT.

Stage favourites

"I'm very excited about this stage. I've always had a good feeling for time trials, and this will be no exception.
I had a very tough stage yesterday, being in the breakaway almost the whole day, so i'm not very sure on how fit for fight i'll be.
But let's hope for the best"

The Race

With his overall GC position in 73th, Jonathan Bellis started the time trial in the middle of the day. He started right behind a very good time trialer Alfredo Balloni, who is former U23 Italian TT champion.

Bellis started out very great and settled the best time so far in the first intermediate sprint on the highest point of the route in the time 13'19.

But after the downhill towards the second intermediate sprint, he had lost some time, driving in as 54th best, 22' behind the best.

Jonathan Castroviejo from Movistar was one of the first favorites on the time trial, starting out quite early. He settled the best overall time after his ride, but in the end dissapointed by finishing 11th.

Meanwhile Jonathan Bellis reached the finish. He had driven very fast in the last part of the time trial and finished 11th, 20' behind provisional leader J. Castroviejo.

A very nice performance by the young Briton who in the end finished as 52th.

Jonny takes 11th only 20 seconds behind the provisional leader

Another great Movistar favorite V. Karpets started out early.
He was by far the greatest among every who had ridden the time trial so far, ending up taking the provisional lead.

In the end he finished 3rd best.

Vladimir Karpets finished 3rd

Our greatest hope Bagdonas rode very good.
He managed to fulfill all of our expectations by end taking the 6th provisional place, only 19' behind Kaperts.

In the end he finished as 24th, 31' down on the winner.

Denis Menchov started out being the greatest favorite, but appearently he isn't in his best shape this early in the season. He ended up in 12th.

Rory Sutherland was the last man on the starting ramp. He was now going to try defend his overall lead. But with many great time trialers right in front of him, it seemed to be a difficult task to manage.

Race leader Sutherland starts riding

When nearing the finish, all was proven that the win should be decided between A. Vicioso and R. Sutherland.

They were both superior in the intermediate sprints, with Vicioso being a little better than race leader Sutherland.

Vicioso in tough fight with Sutherland

But on the last part of the time trial, Vicioso seemed to lose a bit of his speed. Therefore Sutherland took the win for the second time in a row, looking like a secure winner of the overall GC.

Sutherland takes the win once again

It has been a hard but nice day.

I had a great experience riding one of the first time trials in the professionals after my injury, and it is as hard as i remember it.

Bagdonas did a great job, and became the very best from our team. I've got huge respect for that guy and for what he is doing.

Tommorow will be the last stage. I'm looking forward to it.

Tour of Oman - Stage 6

img809.imageshack.us/img809/7679/stage6r.jpg

We've reached the final stage of the Tour of Oman. It has been a huge excitement, but we still have to remain the focus on the race.

This stage will be the last opportunity for our team to get a result, so we'll be on our marks to look out for the right chances.

Stage favourites

img254.imageshack.us/img254/7292/interwb.jpg

"I'm about to say that we've "finally" reached the last stage of this race. I think it has been a very hard time in some very tough terrain.

But it has also been a very good, interesting and instructive race, which has given me some very usefull experiences."

img207.imageshack.us/img207/4778/gri.png

The Race

Mark McNally was able to get into the morningbreak of the day. He has been in an extremely good shape all the race through, so he really deserved to win the KOM sprint of the day, giving him some bonus-money.

McNally takes the mountain sprint

img6.imageshack.us/img6/9476/21905845.jpg

The breakaway group was extended some minutes after, when 3 more riders attacked from the pack, bringing the break up to 6 riders.

The breakaway extended to 6

img69.imageshack.us/img69/3560/73077294.jpg

But even though the breakaway really fought for their survival, the pack as in all the other flat stages, caught the breakaway right before the finishline.

Therefore it came down to yet another mass sprint with Jonathan Bellis being placed very well behind 3 time stage winner M. Goss.

img441.imageshack.us/img441/3920/16047668.jpg

When going into the final part, Katusha came up along the Greenedge train. Bellis was still trying to hold on the wheel of Goss with hard competition from R. Förster.

img39.imageshack.us/img39/1900/73046362.jpg

In the end only two riders seemed to get the gap, being O. Freire and M. Goss. Freire was very close on Goss, but the Australian took yet another stage, by outsprinting Freire.

M. Goss takes the final and his fourth stage

img191.imageshack.us/img191/6704/30059458.jpg

Jonathan Bellis was placed very well in the start of the sprint, but simply couldn't follow the very fast pace in front. Therefore he dropped down and ended as 18th, which even though is a very acceptable result for the young Briton.

Jonny takes 18th on the final stage

Wow what a race!

It has been my very first race in the AnPost Sean Kelly jersey, and i have enjoyed it very much. The guys have been extremely nice, and i seem to have settled in well on the team.

Physically it has been very hard to ride in such a great pack. The lineup has been in world class, and on our team we have to admit that we weren't near the best.

But even though we weren't i think we did very well and took our chances to ride agressive. All in all i'm very pleased about my own and the team's performance.

Best from
Jonny

Those top 20 finishes are really good for a rider like Bellis in a team like An Post!

@fcancellara: Totally agree with you, i'm very happy about the result. Also to mention is that Jonny in fact is no sprinter, so with such a strong lineup it's very acceptable Wink

The first classics of the season is about to begin. Our team has settled in Belgium to ride the Omloop Het Niuewsblad today and the Kuurne - Bruxelles - Kuurne tommorow.

We'll have our faith in Nico and me, to take on to the cobbles.
But it's a very strong lineup, so we aren't expecting any result, even though we've had a nice first part of the season.

img823.imageshack.us/img823/6164/teamks.jpg

Our team will be build up around Nico, since he's the one who's best on the cobbles. But both me and Ennekens will have a free role to do what we want, since it's been a while since Nico rode his last race.

It's probably our strongest lineup for cobbleraces, and especially in Ghyllebert and Wyttinck, we'll have a nice support.

"What are your thoughts here before the race?"

"I'm thinking about the weather right now. It looks like we are going to have some serious rain which could have a big impact on the outcome of the race"

"Any special tactic you have in mind? A breakaway perhaps?

"No, not anything yet. I'll take it when i get into the saddle, but it's for sure that i won't go into some of the morningbreaks. I'll just try to keep myself in the front and out of problems"

img207.imageshack.us/img207/4778/gri.png

The Race

The race started out with several attacks. We had both Segers and Wyttinck in attack but all breakaways was neutralized.

Therefore it took some time when a new and stabile break was made. In the final break we had Ennekens, but he was together with some of the big guys like Boom, Thomas and Maaskant

After a dreadfull cobble section and a heavy crash caused by the rain, the pack was torn into atoms. But both of our leaders, Eeckhout and Bellis, luckily had kept themselves in the very front.

Many favorites were dropped, but riders like Cancellara and Boonen was still in front.

With 35 km to go, Ennekens had to admit that the riders in the breakaway was too good for him, and therefore he dropped back while he still had some energy left, to try help Bellis and Eeckhout.

After the second last cobble section, all groups was completely torn into pieces. This caused that Bellis had to drop off the group with about 20 km to go.

In the front group, riders like Cancellara and Boonen had escaped. But the group still kept the pace high, with Eeckhout being able to follow. Also Ennekens reached the group and tried to help out.

Bellis was in a very good group which worked well together, therefore he wasn't dropped very much, and could still spot the group of Eeckhout.

Boonen, Cancellara and the other favorites caught the breakaway and builded up the final group, where the victory was going to be decided.

The final group

img254.imageshack.us/img254/653/17458084.jpg

The group of Bellis was joined by some very good riders like Van Summeren. Therefore they were able to catch the group of Eeckhout, Gilbert and Ballan with only 3 km to go.

Meanwhile in the front group the sprint started with Hushovd leading out with Boonen in his wheel.

The sprint for victory starts

Also the group behind starts sprinting. Eeckhout seemed to have some extra energy, and was looking very comfortable behind Gilbert.
Bellis was starting to feel the exhaustion and was placed a little further down.

In the end Boonen came quickly from the wheel of Flecha in the left side of the road. Cancellara though seemed to take the win when he left Hushovd's wheel, but Boonen was simply the strongest and had a remarkably fast accelaration in the end, and could crown himself as winner.

Boonen takes the win

Eeckhout really showed his strength and even caught some of the riders who had left the front group. A really powerfull showoff from him. He ended beautifully as 14th.

Bellis also did very well in the sprint and came up from behind. He even outsprinted former world champion Ballan and ended in 21th.

It was a very nice race i think. Even though the rain was really exhautsing, i gladly look back upon this race as one of my best.

Eeckhout rode perfectly and so did Ennekens. It was beautifull.

I'm also very satisfied with my own performance. The lineup was worthy of a world tour classic, so ending up in 21th is a dream comming true.
Let's hope it will also go as well tommorow.

Best from

Kuurne - Bruxelles - Kuurne is the second Belgium season opener this week. There aren't as many cobbles as in the Omloop Het Niuewsblad yesterday, but it will still be a very hard race, especially because of the heavy rains.

The Race

A gigantic breakaway with several favorites was build in the very start of the race. In the break we only had Wyttinck.

At first it didn't look like the pack wanted to catch them, but luckily they did at the end and caught the breakaway with 100 km to go.

A gigantic breakaway was build in the start

img862.imageshack.us/img862/5627/76960156.jpg

No one seemed to want to attack, so Bellis and Ennekens agreed on breaking away, hoping that some other riders wanted to follow.

Bellis and Ennekens on the break

img713.imageshack.us/img713/8338/82981278.jpg

But strangely no one wanted to follow, even though the pack was stopped completely. Therefore the two Anpost riders continued their way alone.

Strangely no one wanted to follow

img207.imageshack.us/img207/4627/92995357.jpg

While Bellis and Ennekens continued in front, the pack didn't seem to heigthen the pace. Therefore the pack was in one piece after the final cobblestone section with about 60 km to go.

The strong, big and well rested pack therefore seemed to make it difficult for the only two riders in front.

img690.imageshack.us/img690/2677/43661972.jpg

With 20 km to go Ennekens couldn't follow the pace of Bellis anymore, especially because Bellis had been much better on the cobble sections.

Ennekens drops off the break

img600.imageshack.us/img600/450/78569194.jpg

On one hand, Bellis simply couldn't resist the very fast pace from the pack. and therefore got caught with 10 km to go.

Immediately Fabian Cancellara made a counter in the left side of the road.

img600.imageshack.us/img600/3739/57784247.jpg

Cancellara continued in front, but a while after, Flecha also wanted to be in front. Eeckhout was placed perfect to follow him, so he accelerated and tried to follow the Spaniard.

img69.imageshack.us/img69/4263/87805810.jpg

The rain was starting to be very heavy while the riders pace was heighten. Therefore a big crash happened in the front of the pack, leaving several riders blocked and crashed. Among others the biggest favorite T. Boonen.

Most of our riders was in the front at the time, but both Ennekens and McConvey fell down in the crash - Luckily nothing seriously happened.

Flecha was a little too good for Eeckhout to follow, but in the end all of the smaller groups in front was gathered in one big group, containing about 15 riders.

Cancellara was in front at the start of the sprint, but he simply didn't had the power left after his performances. Nico was in a very good position just behind D. Millar.

But in the end there was no doubt who was the strongest. With several bikelengths Heinrich Haussler took a great victory.

Nico did another great performance, ending up in 7th.

Also worth to mention is Wyttinck and Segers who ended in 15th and 16th. They excatly kept themselves away from the big crash and worked together on holding the chasing groups behind.

Haussler conquers the victory

What a special feeling i'm having right now...
On one hand, Nico, Wyttinck and Segers' results was in absolutely world class and will have a big impact on the sponsors.

I'm also quite happy about my own performance together with Ennekens.

But on the other hand it's quite disappointing that such a big expression doesn't result in anything.

But at least i know that my shape is nearing the level i'm supposed to have. That's a very good sign

Best from
Jonny
