Is Brajkovic too old for the youngest rider GC or?
Anyway I hope he can get some better results and perhaps a top 5 in the long ITT!

He's just a year too old. Nibali will probably take the youth jersey, as he is the only decent young rider in the race.
Well, Brajkovic definitely need to step it up if he's going to finish inside the top ten. |

20.05.2009: Giro d'Italia
Stage 11
Torino - Arenzano: 206.4km
Tactics meeting
After yesterday's collapse, Janez Brajkovic really needs this "rest day" before the time trial. The same goes for our TT hope Vladimir Gusev, who is beginning to feel that he's been on the road for one and a half week now. A practically flat stage today, where the GC riders will do nothing. That opens up a possibility for a breakaway, if the sprinter's teams don't want to use this rare opportunity to get a stage win.
It ended with a mass sprint, which Team Columbia's Michael Barry won somewhat surprisingly in front of two Lampre riders. The Canadian is not really renowned for his sprinting ability, but the small climb a few km before the finish may have taken the sting out of the best sprinters. Now we're looking forward to tomorrow's time trial!

21.05.2009: Giro d'Italia
Stage 12
Sestri Levante - Riomaggiore: 63.4km
Tactics meeting
63 very hard kilometers' fight against the clock. Just the thought of it is enough to scare many of the top ten GC riders. Except Basso, Brajkovic and to a certain extent Scarponi, all of the GC favourites are miserable time trialists. We have a strong TT team, even if it didn't show on the team time trial, so our riders will not hold back anything today. Before the Giro, we targeted this stage for a stage win, and that hasn't changed. Ivan Basso will be a tough nut to crack, though.
Our Portugese champion Sergio Paulinho set an early best time which stood for a long time.
The veteran Chris Horner rode the time trial of his life today, and bettered Paulinho's time.
Horner wasn't in the lead for long, though. A few riders later, young Ivan Rovny flew over the line 20 seconds faster than Horner. Fantastic performances by our guys so far. It would be exciting to see where Rovny's time would place him at the end of the day.
With so many great rides, there was bound to be a dissappointment. Gusev was today's let-down. Even though he didn't do too badly, he was behind both Rovny and Horner.
Then it was our captain's turn. At the first intermediate timecheck, Brajkovic crushed Rovny's best time, and the same happened at the second timecheck. Could it be possible? Could he keep this up until the finish? When Brajkovic passed the finishing line, he had ridden over a minute faster than Ivan Rovny and almost two minutes faster than such a strong rider as Luis Leon Sanchez. Surely not even Basso was able to beat this?
The rider starting behind Brajkovic also rode a strong time trial. The Swede Gustav Larsson came in to a provisional second place, 46 seconds behind the Slovenian.
One man who didn't ride any strong time trial was Mauricio Soler, third-placed in the GC. The Colombian got through the course almost five and a half minute slower than Janez Brajkovic. That meant our captain was only 20 seconds behind Soler in the GC.
The last starter was Ivan the Terrible. La Maglia Rosa was a few seconds behind Brajkovis at both intermediate timechecks, but he kept a steady pace. Halfway through the course, he had passed both Soler and Scarponi on the road. Basso never slowed down, and when he was heading towards the finish I was really nervous. Would Brajkovic's time be enough? When the Italian crossed the line, the clock showed three seconds behind Brajkovic! We had won the stage! Our captain advances four places in the GC, and is now just 20 seconds behind third place. Maybe a podium finish is possible after all? If he doesn't lose any more time in the next mountain stages, Brajkovic will easily make up 20 seconds on the last time trial. Exciting days ahead!

22.05.2009: Giro d'Italia
Stage 13
Lido di Camaiore - Firenze: 150.4km
Tactics meeting
After yesterday's monster time trial, a short flat stage suits us well today. It's probably too flat for any break to get away, so the chances for a mass sprint are big.
And a mass sprint is exactly what happened. For once, the winner was not a surprise. It's more surprising that Luca Paolini hasn't got any stage wins before today.

23.05.2009: Giro d'Italia
Stage 14
Campi Bisenzio - Bologna: 174.9km
Tactics meeting
Today's stage smells like breakaway win. It's short, hilly and will not affect the GC. We'll try getting one of our less threatening riders in the breakaway, and go for the stage win.
We had a Discovery rider in most breakaway attempts, but no one got a big enough gap, so the peloton reached the uphill finish all together. It turned out to be a sprint between the climbers, and Igor Anton was the strongest. The basque rider is in the process of doing an excellent Giro, and this was his second stage win so far.

24.05.2009: Giro d'Italia
Stage 15
Forli' - Faenza: 158.4km
Tactics meeting
Another perfect breakaway stage, but the pack doesn't seem to like breakaways, considering that not one has worked out so far. We'll nevertheless try again, and will be eager to get in the breakaway from the start.
Unfortunately, our photographer didn't turn up today, so we couldn't get any pictures from the stage (the game crashed). Sergio Paulinho was in the break, but as usual, it was chased down. Liquigas rode a hard pace up the last hill, and only 30 riders remained for the finish. It ended in a sprint which was won by the rider in the picture, Alexander Efimkin. Poor Vincenzo Nibali was runner-up for the second stage in a row.

25.05.2009: Giro d'Italia
Stage 16
Pergola - Monte Petrano: 235.9km
Tactics meeting
We've reached the Giro's queen stage. Two steep mountains are to be climbed before the stage ends on top of the difficult Monte Petrano. Our tactic is just to hang on with everything we've got, or more specifically, with everything Brajkovic has got. No teammates has so far got over many mountain tops together with the Slovenian, so he'll probably be all alone today as well.
Already on the penultimate mountain, Brajkovic began to struggle. Together with a lot of other riders, he had to let go of the front group halfway to the top. Not very promising. There were no one left from the early morning breakaway, so the GC leaders were leading the stage.
Bruseghin and Gustav Larsson also had to let go of the Maglia Rosa group just before the top.
L.L. Sanchez and Garzelli got across from the Brajkovic group, and caught up with the two who had been dropped by Basso&co.
Those who were left in the front after the penultimate mountain were Nibali, Scarponi, Valjavec, Anton, Basso, Pozzovivo and Soler. The deficit back to Larsson, Bruseghin, Sanchez and Garzelli was 1'30, and Brajkovic was one minute further back.
Just before the leaders were starting to climb Monte Petrano, Michele Scarponi had a puncture. Very inconvenient for the rider who was second in the GC.
Meanwhile, Larsson left the three others in the second group.
The Swede reached Scarponi, who had got himself a new wheel, and the two started the climb together. They were now 1'40 behind the leading group of six.
As mentioned, Larsson and Scarponi were 1'40 behind the leaders at the beginning of the last climb. Bruseghin, Sanchez and Garzelli were one minute further back, while Brajkovic's group were 1'40 behind Bruseghin&co, and therefore 4'30 behind the leaders. In this group was also number five in the GC, Rinaldo Nocentini. Thus, there were other riders than Brajkovic who also lost time today.
At the front, Mauricio Soler attacked out of the leading group.
Ivan the Terrible in pink had no problems countering. Which is more than one can say about the rest of the group, who now had broken up completely.
Meanwhile, three minutes back, Bruseghin, Garzelli and Sanchez had caught Gustav Larsson. Larsson's colleague, Scarponi, had upped his tempo and was one minute in front of these four.
Back at the front, Nibali, Valjavec and Soler had joined up with each other, while Anton and Pozzovivo were dropped. The latter was about to get back into the top 10, though. Nobody was able to follow Ivan Basso. La Maglia Rosa had ridden away from everyone, and was alone in the lead.
Total domination from the GC leader. Ivan Basso climbed up Monte Petrano to his stage win number three!
Janez Brajkovic collapsed completely today, and finished 7'30 behind Basso. He was probably exhausted after the effort in the time trial. Anyway, he is now out of the running for a place on the podium. We'll aim to keep his top ten placing until Rome, and we're looking forward to a much needed rest day tomorrow.
